Spookily Old

This is apparently the oldest pub in England and it's like a warren of caves where someone like Bilbo Baggins would feel right at home. When you go up the stairs to the top floor there's a big table and loads of medieval chairs - a real experience and apparently it's also haunted! Great place to come for a drink though.

From the outside it just looks like a really old pub - on the inside you KNOW it's a really old pub. Half building and half carved in to the rocks beneath the castle this is ONE of the oldest pubs in England. There is a network of rooms where the ceiling and walls are simply sandstone rock. There was always a rumour that a model ship which hung from the ceiling was cursed and whoever moved it would soon die - the last person to touch it was a cleaner and shortly after they died (which explains the 3 inch layer of dust on it). Worth visiting to see it but don't expect a wild night. The rock keeps it a nice cool temperature whjich is great for keeping your pint cool.

If you find yourself in the city centre and fincy a pint but don't want to mix with all the yuppies in the trendy wine bars then this a perfect alturnative!
It's rumoured to be the oldest pub in England and it feels like it when you go inside (in a good way - you could imagine your grandparents getting rather tipsey in here many years ago)

All the blah about it being the oldest pubbe in merrie olde Englande peaked my curiosity, but in a lot of ways it's no different really to all of the country pubs that I'm used to in Devon. It's a bit of a rabbit warren inside: beware the low ceilings.

Reputedly the oldest pub in the country, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem takes you on a journey back through time. Apparently it was once linked to Nottingham castle via a tunnel that took ale to the castles residents and as you step inside for the first time, you certainly feel you're in a very old, creaking building. The ales good, and the atmosphere warm and friendly - pretty much everything you could want from a pub!

It should be better

It's a chain pub... so there's nothing exciting about it from that respect.
However, it is quite cool to drink in the (self proclaimed) oldest pub in the world.
It's also a lot more enjoyable if you're about 4 foot 3... coz anything taller and you'll be smacking your head of the low beams.
Also, it's in a bit of a hollow, so there's loads of midges and gnats in the summer... which isn't that pleasant.
Not far from the town centre...but far enough to be a bit of an arse to walk.
