Beyond expectations
This is a brilliant museum and with free entry it makes a non-expensive day out for a family. It isn't just a boys day out, I found all the planes and information about where the planes have fought really interesting. Kids will love it as they have steps up into some of the planes so they can actually get into the planes, sit in them and see the controls. It is also worth checking their events calendar so you can go there and catch an air display and see the planes in action.

Above expectations
If you like military aircraft this is well worth a visit. Free admission to many hangers and areas filled with all sort of aircraft with lots of information on the subjects. It's a little way from central London but not too far from Colindale tube station. I love looking at the strange looking early planes, but there are plenty of jets and more modern planes and weapons on display. Lots to see a whole day could be spent here stopping for lunch in the cafe which isn't that great or taking something of your own to eat in the outside or inside picnic area.
