Not too big that you have to spend a long time in, but big enough to have decent exhibitions on. It's airy and spacey and a bit quirky as it's split over 2 buildings! The cafe is cool too if you want to eat in unusual surroundings! And try the book shop if you're keen!

This is a free, small exhibition of creative photographic work which is an absolute haven in the middle of one of London's busiest tourist areas. I have never gone in there and not liked what they are displaying. If you lean or have ever leaned towards conceptual photography at all, take a break from the posing shots of the average facebook profile to go here and be re-inspired by the work of thought-provoking artists that uphold what photography should be about. Combine with a visit to the National Portrait Gallery which is just up the road.

The Photographers' Gallery consistently showcases some of the best photography of the century. I am always surprised by how long I can spend in such a little place. The great thing about it is that none of the exhibitions are too large, or too elitist, or too expensive (in fact most of the gallery is free). I have never popped in and not stayed for less than an hour. It's a fantastic little gem in an otherwise really touristy, loud and hectic area of London.
Go in one day and have a look around. The bookshop alone could keep me happy for hours. Then treat yourself to one of their homemade cakes and a cup of superior coffee, and be glad that London has places like this. 5 stars.

This is a small gallery with a book shop attatched. It has a wide selection of exhibitions to visit through out the year if you are passing there is usually some new show. Pictures of people in out of the way places are a speciality.
Next door is a cafe serving snacks and with another smaller exhibition area. All pictures are for sale. Up the stairs is a sale room open most days.
Overall a pleasent way to open your mind to the world around you and within you.

I love the Photographers' Gallery. Split across two small sites, it holds a wide range of accessible, but always fascinating and beautiful shows.
The most recent show 'Found Photographs' proved to be fun and thought-provoking which questioned the authenticity of the act of photography without ever veering into pretense. Situated just off Covent Garden and completely free, if you're ever passing by there should never be an excuse not to pop in and quickly check out what's on.
They also host the annual Deutsche Borse Photography Awards (or whoever is sponsoring them now) which always proves to highlight some of the world's leading photographers.
Also have a great cafe and book shop.
