Lovin the wines here, we went here with a friend who pretended to be so into wines we ended up tasting most of them. Not a great head the next day but we had a hell of time, really really top night out.

Going underground

If you like the feeling of being underground then come here. Its unusual but a really cool place. Its different and very much like an actual cellar with the bar going round it. Lots of little hidden places to sit so you can have an intimate drink here.

Never has memory loss been so memorable

It is with significant reluctance that I write this. You see, I love Gordon’s. I REALLY love it. And one of the reason’s I love it is that not many people seem to know it exists.
It’s like a secret underground cave, a cave which is dark and dank in the bestest way, feels like a Jack the Ripper film set and sells wine wine wine – and nothing else. Oh, except for cheese cheese cheese.
So, there we have it; a candle-lit, underground, clandestine sweaty cave, full of wine and cheese and people who are clearly up to something. You can’t go here and not be mischievous. As soon as you walk down the grotty, steep stairs you feel a bit impish. By the time you’ve ordered your wine, you’re feeling downright wayward. Some of my best naughty work has happened here.

Walk down some quite steep creaky stairs and you're suddenly in an otherworldly wartime feeling wine bar just by Embankment.
It does get very busy though so you can often feel overwhelmed upon arrival and in summer it gets very hot. However there are plenty of outdoor tables with parasols which is nice.
There's a huge range of wine and it's the only drink on offer. They also have random bits of food like bread and really good cheese.
I would think it would be great for dates. If I ever have one again in my life I shall try out this theory.

You can't really go wrong with this place. Don't be put off by the facade the place is awesome. Descend the creaky stairs and you are confronted with lovely cheeses where you can get a selection with bread and pickles for under a tenner. Turn the corner and choose a wine. They only sell wine and have a great choice. The place is always busy so be prepared to stand but if you can get a seat enjoy the atmosphere of the arched and low roof and candlelight. It's great for the winter, but even better in summer when you can stand outside and take in a view of embankment gardens. I've taken friends from out of town here and everyone loves it! I can't fault it!

In the winter, hunker down in the cobwebby cellars. In the summer, sit outside and glug away.
Go when it's a little quieter and you can reach the food (tasty). It does get packed though and it can be hard to find a seat.
Last time I was there a slightly crazy guy was chatting to people sat outside and selling sparklers and party poppers. He seems to come round regularly and is pretty polite.
On a weird note, I love the hand driers, they blast your hands dry in a matter of seconds.
A great place to drink

It's still great and I still can't believe it passes health and safety but am glad it does. Just wish people would stop telling everyone about it...oops there I go. Nice in the summer but really comes into its own as an autumn winter treat. And now you can actually see inside as the clouds of smoke have gone, hope they don't think to clean it though, I suspect the walls are 75% nicotine by now.
Surely London's greatest wine bar, there's nowhere else like it I'll be bound. Now shhhh!

Dank and dingy: just how we like it

Because of its location in the cellar of a shopfront near Embankment tube, you could be forgiven that the slightly damp fug which greets you as you descend into the dingy cellar was the Thames creeping in through the murky walls, but don't panic - Gordon's is as safe and eccentric as it always was.
With a wine-list which extends from the cheap(ish) and cheerful to the sublime and ridiculously-priced, it's very easy for a swift glass with friends on the way home to turn into a full-blown, several-bottles -later chucking-out-time session without you even noticing. This is partly owed to the cosy atmosphere of the cellar bar, and partly because there are (thankfully) no distractions like corner TVs or mobile reception to haul your attention away from the wine and conversation.
What used to be a well-kept Londoner secret has got out, and as other reviewers have mentioned, it has a tendency to get very busy these days, especially on Thursdays and Fridays. Best on autumn and winter nights.

Great wine, unusual location

I ended up here one Sunday afternoon with some friends... We entered the darkness of the cellar around 1pm and emerged around 6ish a little worse for wear having sampled quite a few of their excellent wines. A feeling something akin to ending a big night by exiting a club into daylight!
Definitely go if you're a wine fanatic and still enjoyable even if you aren't.

I got to say this is the most weirdess bar i have been to but a great experience! its like being underground and stuck in a cave. Its anything but cosy. Very simple wooden table and chairs layout. The selection of wine is great there is much variety. Its a nice place to go to lay back and relax.

this is a great place to drink in. the actual place is situated near enbankment station which is not far away from my work. this place is usually full at first it may seem to be odd to sit in there but after a few rounds of drinks you will sit in there fine. the service offered is a great one and the staff are brilliant towards all customers.
Atmospheric

This is such an atmospheric place (a friend of mine said it was 'scary', even), but unfortunately it is becoming so well known it's often very difficult to get a seat in the bar itself.
A major downside which I experienced the other day is the fact that it gets INCREDIBLY hot inside, so it really isn't suitable for the summer.

Drinking in th Cellar

I had never been to a place like this before, maybe says more about me than the place! Gordons is a wine bar with a difference, the main seating areas seem to be in the actual wine cellar, which at first is a little bizarre, but after a glass or two it starts to feel comforting to be in such a claustrophobic environment. The layout is unique, with little nooks and cranny's to be seated in; the arch-like roofing send echos reverberating around the round which adds to the strangeness and brilliance of the establishment. There is only one downside that I can see, space is limited in the downstairs area and can be a bit of a squash at times but otherwise I would recommend this for a cosy and intimate night out, or for a small group outing. There is an outside area aswell if you start to feel like the walls are closing in!
