Overpriced - food, service and dining room all poor

05 Oct 08, 14:02 1 Well below expectations

I had high hopes for Moti Mahal but I was very disappointed.

For the prices they charge (£17 a starter, £15 for a main) I expected good ingredients, a nice restaurant experience and some interesting courses on the menu.

Unfortunately I didn't receive any of this. I'd describe it as an average local Indian in the middle of west end so punters are tricked (like I was) into thinking it might be something a little special.

Avoid and head up the road to either Sitaary (if you're hungry) or Bhatti Indian if you fancy a curry fix.

Moti Mahal was founded more that four decades ago in 1959, the first restaurant was opened in Delhi. Moti Mahal went on to become world famous for commercialising the tandoor oven and allegedly inventing murg makhani – parent version of chicken tikka by the British. The dish was created from tandoori chicken with a secret sauce that took the market by storm. The excellent food caught the attention of notable dignitaries, such as the first Prime Minister of India-Pandit – Jawaharlal Nehru and later his daughter Smt. Indira Gandi (who also later became Prime Minister in 1966) and even the Kennedys are said to have dined at the famous Moti Mahal. Moti Mahal was opened by two families, the Sarwal and the Gujral. The families have successfully expanded the business and divided the management, keeping the Moti Mahal name and opening various Moti Mahal restaurants throughout India. In 2005, Moti Mahal, was seeking to expand globally and offered Anirudh the position of head chef at Moti Mahal in London.
