Best upmarket local gastropub type thing

Above expectations
I consider myself extremely lucky to have the Alma a 5 minute walk away. It's an excellent boozer with lovely big windows, a great range of beers and a truly ace and always reliable white Rioja by the bottle or glass. They also have a gastro kitchen whose menu changes everyday according to seasonal ingredients. Everything always looks great and goes down equally well and they always have interesting vegetarian dishes (ie not just goats cheese salad or quiche...). I personally adore the bubble & squeak side order.
The staff are affable, the decor is old pub wood elegance with sofas round the back and there's a cute patio garden bedecked with flowers that's really, really pleasant for a sunny, Sunday lunch.
They also do take outs - you can order the Sunday roast on the phone and pick it up to take home if you're feeling too rancid to sit in the pub. Also, they do picnic hampers to take to Clissold Park.
Bobby Gillespie sometimes complains about the noise but that just adds to the appeal if you ask me. Lovely.
