best lunch ever!

Above expectations
I hesitated in writing this review as I quite like the quiet personal touch of this local friendly cafe, if too many of you get wind of it I may not get a table. Just to fill you in(!) though I've been eating at the Clerkenwell Kitchen since its early days as a rough and ready gaff hidden inside Clerkenwell Workshops, where I once had a humble unit, since then new landlords have 'revitalised' the whole building and that's all gone corporate chic but luckily the cafe has kept the same owners and most of its original appeal. For starters I'm very fussy about my coffee and here it's always the best. Lunch-wise the menus are well-conceived for the media-savvy clientele, (no more dirty fingernails and jewellers' aprons like the old days). I detect a strong hint of HughFW and the local/seasonal revolution which is all good news, foodies can check out their blackboard of suppliers, and overall the value is excellent. Last week I had Dorset Mackerel stuffed with herbs that was perfectly cooked and presented, also I was blown away by their Taleggio and mushroom tart (real men don't eat quiche these days you know). Puddings are great and the wine list well-chosen. Good place to impress your guests and destined to grow in reputation, just keep off my patch for a bit longer though, last Christmas it was full of raucous parties, I crept off to the pub... (The 3 Kings if you must know..)
