Good Hollywood Wax, cheap price!

I was a bit skeptical when I found a place that gave Hollywood (everything off) waxes for under 35 pounds, but this place was great! I had Louise, who was a bit quiet (it makes me less uncomfortable if they're a bit chatty) - but the wax was quick, as painless as it gets, well done and only 22 pounds!

Bring cash, but if you're looking for a good wax, this is the place!

Maybe not great for first timers, as they don't do much to put you at ease, but if you're already used to stripping down and letting a stranger wax your nether-regions, 171 Hair and Beauty can't be beat.

I just visited 171 after reading the reviews on this site.

Lovely Paulo cut my hair and she was a wonderfull, she listened to what i wanted and put up with my contstant questioning and generally being a pain. I love my hair cut! When i was leaving the manager just showed me a tiny sign (2inch x 2inch) that said they only accept cash or cheques which is surprising for a london salon even my local morrisons no longer takes cheques!? So, after he demanded (no appology, no plea or thankyou. not even a smile) i leave my mobile phone or keys and off i went 10 minutes up to the tube station to get some cash. When i returned he didnt even look up at me. Just passed me my phone and told me how much i owed him. I left a tip for the Paulo - as if it wasnt for him i would have been a very satified customer. I dont think i would go back just beause i left so angry at how rude the manager was.

Paying cash is not a big problem if only they tell you when you book the apointment.

Very bad service, one of the worst I had here in London. The Italian haidresser named Marco of the 171 Hair and Beauty tryed to still me lots of money. As I am Italian as well I trusted him and I booked this 25 hair extensions for 135 pounds. I paid him more 47.50 pounds in advance and I took an appointment for the week after. I chose with him 2 colours but one was different of the one I chose. He assumed "I" was wrong with the colour but I remembered I told him many times the colours I wanted. As I am a reasonable person and I thought maybe that he could have done a mistake I told him that it was ok and I didn't want that colour but only the other one. I mentioned him at the beginning I was not sure if applying 25 so a half of the other colour was ok. Then I noticed also that these hair extensions were really thin...it was not really what I wanted...he told they were better, they last longer. He was applying and I was reading a newspaper, I didn't check neither how many he applyed, stupid!! When he finished I didn't really like the effect but still trusting this miserable I went on the till and he asked me 135 pounds!!! I started to realise he wanted to steal me money, a lot of money. Fist I remembered him I paid in advance 47.50 and he told me YES THEN IS 88 POUNDS!!!!!!!!!! Then I made him notice the hair extensions were not 25 but less....how many I didn't know because I didn't check....and he told NOOOO I APPLYED 25!!!!!!!!! I asked him "please can you count them in front of me?".........and he counted 16. So I told him I understood he need money but stealing is not the way to have more, and I pretended a discount at least!! He told me YES IT IS 50 POUNDS THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At this point I used the calculator in my mobile and for 16 extensions I should have paid 39.50 pounds. He didn't know what to say but he found another excuse: the service charge (he never mentioned about this and as I paid so much the previous time for a simple bad done tint, I didn't expect any service charge!!). I laugh at him tellling that I was very sorry he was so desperate and I have compassion for him and I told him that paying 39.50 it was paying too much still but I would have payed because I didn't want to stay there a minute more. So I payed and he steal me money, not as much as he wanted but still a lot of money and once at home I counted again the extension: they are 13 not 16!! I couldn't complain with the manager because that day he told me he would have waited for me coming a bit late from work also if the shop was closed...nice guy!! So don't go there and don't get your hair done from him, you will be robbed.

I had my wedding hair and make-up done at 171 by Marco, plus a mani/pedi and eyebrow shape, and cannot rate it highly enough. Despite being a busy, bustling salon, I got given a wonderful personal service, nothing was too much trouble, and the end results were great. Although it is quite a cool place, it is also really laid back and not 'cliquey' like some trendy places. A hidden gem on Upper St.

I had no expectations from 171 but I was pleasantly surprised. The beautician was great, gentle with extraction but effective, and the hairdresser (Marco) amazing. I haven't had such a good haircut in years! Great serviuce for a very reasonable price. I would definitely recommend 171. The no credit card thing is a pain though!

A relaxing experience

I hate having my hair cut, but this made the whole thing much less stressful by playing Thom Yorke, not keeping me waiting for a second, and not making forced, meaningless banter. They took my booking on the day (sunday, open til 6) and £27 for a haircut on upper street isn't bad.

Got a decent snip here for a reasonable price, which included the mandatory 'free' drink and a wash first.

Service was snappy (although it was at lunch) and the whole wash-style-cut took a bit under 30 minutes, which is pretty damn good.

Only negative point was they don't take cards (I mean who doesn't these days for over 20 quid purchases?) causing a quick jog up the road to the nearest cash point. An annoying end to an otherwise pretty good cut.

I have previously reviewed 171 and praised it's beauticians. I have since had my hair cut and coloured at 171, and was impressed. The hairdresser was very friendly, and he really listened to what I wanted (not a given, I've found from past experience), and I was happy with the result. The colour was also very good. I found the prices to be reasonable - certainly not cheap, but this is a trendy salon in Angel so it's what you expect.

Best wax in London!

171 is a beauty salon and hairdresser. I've never been to the hairdresser's, but I have heard good things from friends that have. The beauticians are fantastic - the bikini line and leg waxes they do are practically pain free (hard to believe I know, but true). I would never go anywhere else for a wax. The other treatments are extensive; from facials to eye lash perming. A particular favourite of mine is the relaxing back massage. Their prices are also reasonable, considering 171's central location.
