I took my 6 year old son here on a trip to London. We both had a great time looking at (and touching) the exhibits. He really liked the space stuff! The hands on activites are geat and although very busy (I did go in the school holidays!!) we got to try lots of cools things. All this for free - you can't ask for better than that!!

I only realised last year that alot of the big museums in London now have free entry.... there's no excuse! The Science Museum has a fantastic array of the weird and wonderful.... remember going on the earthquake machine as a kid... now - there's so much more. They have special theme weeks too with different displays - check out their website!

Whether you like looking at replica boats, scientific equiptment or your there for the simulators there is something to do for everyone.
The great thing about the Science Museum is they change the exhibits all the time so there is generally something new to look at every couple of months.
When i last went there was a separate Sega World exhibition of computer games from the 60's to now, even though it was £8 it was fantastic.

Even if you're not a fan of the science, you'll love the hands-on exhibits at the science museum. It's great fun for kids and big kids will love it too. It's a shame about the cafe though, last time I went it was SO busy it was unpleasant.

The Science Museum now holds a collection of over 300,000 items, including such famous items as Stephenson's Rocket, Puffing Billy (the oldest surviving steam locomotive), the first jet engine, a reconstructionof Francis Crick and James Watson's model of DNA, some of the earliest remaining steam engines, a working example of Charles Babbage's Difference engine, the first prototype of the 10,000-year Clock of the Long Now, and documentation of the first typewriter. It also contains hundreds of interactive exhibits. A recent addition is the IMAX 3D Cinema showing science and nature documentaries, some of them in 3-D, and the Wellcome Wing which focuses on digital technology. Entrance has been free since 1 December 2001

Bringing science to life

There are so many fantastic things to do for free in London and a visit to the Science Museum has to be one of the best.
My daughter has a very enquiring mind and never does she seem so fulfilled than when she is exploring the many activities on offer here. She is engrossed for hours when strolling around the galleries specifically designed for children and loves eating in the cafe.
I must say I disagree that there is not much for adults as I enjoy exploring the development of the industrial world, even if it is through household products!

Best day out in London to suit anyone

It's a great shame that the word "Science" will put so many off going to the Science Museum. Far from nerdy or geeky, it's a great day out for any group of people. There is something for everyone, even the kids can have hours (literally) of fun.
For the adults there is guaranteed to be something of interest in all the floors, and the Wellcome wing at the end of each floor has lots of hands on games. The iMax theatre often has something 3D on for under a tenner, and considering entrance is free it's a small price to pay. Similarly there is a fun simulator for about a fiver.
The kids will enjoy the games in the Wellcome wing and also the educational Basement, with lots of science based games.
Cafes are overpriced, as with any London eatery. Bring your own food.
The fun even continues when you get home as a lot of the attractions will put your photos online if you put your email address in.

The Science Museum is one of those rare attractions that fulfil every part of their advertised promise and genuinely offer something for everyone.
The range of exhibits is amazing, and each sure to fascinate. There is enough 'hands on' for the children to play with, and a wide selection of spell-binding attractions for adults. It really is that good.
Add in the 3D cinema shows and temporary exhibits (generally require an extra ticket) and this is more than can be seen in a day.
Oh and for the killer argument, did I mention that entrance is Free?

Great place for taking kids to for a day out and not bad for adults even without taking children along. Plenty of hands on learning for children and still a fair amount of information for adults to absorb. It is free to get in unless you want to go to any extra exhibition or the Imax cinema here, it doesn't matter that much if you just pop in to check it out. Last time I visited it was halfway through some improvements so the large steam engines where not on display, hopefully they are open again by now as this is one of my high lights. I also hope the improvements went as far as updating the ‘office through the years' display a bit further on than that eighties!
