The only pub on the wharf!

26 Aug 07, 15:52 4* Above expectations

The cat and canary is a lovely pub smack inbetween Canary Wharf and Westferry DLR stations- Westferry might be marginally closer- but to be honest, there isn't much in it.

Its Fullers run, and usually has a good choice of bitters- its flagship bitter being the well known "London Pride". Along side the usual house beers, they have seasonal ones in depending on the, um...season. Summer ale, I must say, is rather nice.

Like all London pubs these days, it appears to be run mainly by bar staff from Poland which limited English, at least, the kitchen is anyway.

This isn't a "night out" type pub. This is a "take your mum here for sunday lunch" type pub, or a "quick pint after work", pub. It gets extremely busy around 5/6pm with suits, which clears out around 9.30. At weekends, its a veritable graveyard. In fact, so much so, it sometimes close.

Over the last few years, its made a massive effort to create all home made food so to speak. They don't grow their own veg or anything, don't get me wrong, but they make everything fresh on the premesis daily. They don't fart around with frozen crap. As a result, the food is rather nice. Check out the specials board and you will get yourself an excellent deal.

The drinks are typical price for London- not too bad really.

They have areas available for hire for private parties for free, and a set menu for buffet style food at a reasonable price.

landlord is a top bloke.

Trusted Local

Old Man's Wharf

11 May 07, 15:34 3* As expected

A bit of a surprise compared with the posh aspect of Canary Wharf, the Cat & Canary is actually an alright pub. Spacious and an "old man's pub", it has decent beer and is actually quite a pleasant experience. There's little point denying that any pub around Canary Wharf is going to have downsides. Filled with "suits" at times, the pubs can get overly packed and uncomfortable, but the Cat & Canary holds up well the rest of the time. In fact, the only personal negative I can think of about this place is that it's quiz machine has NEVER worked properly any time I've tried to use it. That's a mild problem them.
