Well below expectations
Really? I think this isn't the worst of the south London 'Spoons (ever been to the one in Brixton?), but you're really pushing it giving it 2 stars.
OK I have been in there more times that I should have, but the pub's full of hardened alcoholics, the toilets are grim, and the atmosphere's dreadful..

Below expectations
If someone says they'll meet you in the pub opposite Balham station - dissuade them and suggest that they walk the extra hundred metres to either The Bedford or The Tup or The Firefly.
This is one of those cheapo pubs with the sort of drinks promotions that the Daily Mail rail against and accuse of being responsible for the collapse of our society. They may have a point.
The clientele seem predominantly composed of people who don't have to work during the day - old codgers, young geezers and anyone else who wants to pay as little as possible for a pint and doesn't care about the surroundings.
It's a step up from drinking a can of Special Brew in the park, but not a very steep step.

Below expectations
I'm sorry, it just is. Yes, it's cheap (so cheap in fact, it's almost worth going there) but I just find it a bit soul-destorying. Doesn't smell great, sticky tables, lots of people in Reebok classics. Mind you, the older boys (50 plus) quite like it and I think that's great. After all, with all the gastro pubs around nowadays, there aren't many places for them to hang out. But, to me, it's not somewhere I'd want to spend a night (unless, it's the day before payday that is!)
