Get lost in here for a few hours and leave with your head spinning in awe, not just at the exhibits and paintings on display but the building itself. I prefer to pay and go to the exhibitions as i find the usual displays a little overwhelming. The Turner prize retrospective was awesome but i felt disappointed by the Photographing Britain exhibition.

More Stately Sibling

The Tate Britain always feels like the older, more responsible sibling to the Tate Modern.
It's perched on a spot on the river, away from the baying crowds of tourists that flood the Tate Modern / Southbank on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
It's an imposing building, all white and with the marks of a war so many years ago. The interior is just as impressive and it can be an absolute haven on a hot day.
Personally, I prefer modern art but it's the calm and quiet that attracts me to the Tate Britain every time. It's away from the crowd on a Sunday (when I usually end up there) and I can just relax and enjoy the art without being surrounded by so many people I can't see the art.

Poor Tate Britain seems to be constantly overshadowed by its ever growing younger sibling Tate Modern which gets all the cool modern art.
While most of the museum's pay shows are predominantly aimed at a more traditional art loving crowd- think Turner and Hogarth rather than Warhol and Duchamp.
For modern/contemporary art-fans, Tate Britain houses a surprisingly impressive collection including some great works by Francis Bacon, Douglas Gordon and Sam Taylor-Wood.
Chris Offili's Upper Room has to be worth the trip alone - a dark paneled room housing a collection of 13 brilliantly coloured paintings of rhesus macaque monkeys. Google it to get a better idea, as my description won't do it justice.
Put simply, if you're visiting London and looking for a world-class modern art gallery don't forget Tate Britain as you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Beautiful to look at, but personally inferior to it's younger sibling

The unfortunate (depending on your viewpoint) thing about art is the complete subjectivity of it. As a result, any gallery is notoriously difficult to review. Take Tate Britain as an example. Here we have a beautiful building, well designed, expertly laid out, and generally perfectly sorted. Everything about this branch of the Tate genre is spot on, however personally the art feels a bit too ancient in style and lacking in creativity. I can appreciate the neauces of styles, the way the artists capture each individual landscape in structure, but to me it feels like a dated style of art with internal meaning. Again however, this is personal taste. Like it's younger sibling, Tate Modern, Tate Britain is a masterpiece of arcitecture and design, and like Modern it also contains the usual array of spendid shops and members lounge. Tate Britain is beautiful to look at, and it is a commercial cash cow, but from an art point of view, personally my tastes lie with more modern styles down the river.

Home of some of Britain's greatest art. You can view the Turner Prize here, as well as pieces dating back to the 1500's.
