A little greasey

17 Apr 08, 07:51 2* Below expectations

I know it seems silly to say this of western chinese food but yes, it was a little to greasey for my liking. Which was a shame as there was a great selection on the menu and I was spoilt for veggie choice.

If you are down in China Town I'm sure you could fine somewhere better but this place is about as standard as they get.

Cheap roast pork

17 Jul 07, 15:29 2* Below expectations

This place does cheap roast pork/roast duck/chicken to take away. (those ones which hang next to the window). 5 pounds per box and its ok. I like the fact that you can tell them not to chop them up for you, so you can re-roast them again when you get home, and you will have a yummy crackling!!!

Dont dip the sauce that comes with the roast pork tho.. i think it tastes a bit weird.

Lunch is better

13 Jul 07, 10:57 2* Below expectations

This is my second review of Crispy Duck, and I was slightly disappointed that the evening meal I had there with Rik (below) wasn't as good as the lunch I had had there on a previous occasion, even though it was perfectly palatable (chiu yim baby squid). My advice is to go before five to take advantage of the wide range of scrummy Dim Sum, because after that it's just another sweet and sour tourist trap.

Fairly standard for Chinatown

13 Jul 07, 10:46 3* As expected

I'm not usually the type of person who goes into any restaurant where they have bits of dead animal in the window. Be it kebab shops or chinese restaurants, I tend to avoid the ones with rows of duck, chicken and squid in their windows which has probably been there for days.

I did get half-dragged into the Crispy Duck, moaning that they had crispy ducks (with heads still on) and squids on skewers in the window. When I got the tattered menu with pages falling out, I was slightly regretting coming in. Luckily though, they did have a good selection of things that I liked alongside the stranger items such as squid and frogs legs.

When the food did arrive, it was rather good, nothing particularly special considering the amount of other Chinese restaurants in the area. I had the chicken in satay sauce, not too spicy and nicely cooked. The rice was reminiscent of high school rice, a bit clumpy and dry, but once you got some sauce on it, it wasn't too bad.

The price was pretty cheap, I only paid 12 pound for a starter, main and a beer, so it's quite reasonable. The staff are all pretty helpful, but the restaurant is generally standard fare in a place where there is a lot of competition. I wouldn't recommend this place to people but I wouldn't dissuade anyone either.

Lots of lovely dim sum

09 Jun 07, 12:19 3* As expected

Sitting inconspicuously amid the miriad of generic shopfronts in the heart of chinatown, this is a great place to grab a bite of lunch to eat with friends. Specialising in dim sum, it doesn't pander to a British palette and is a refreshingly authentic gaffe in the sea of sweet and sour houses that surround it. Go here with three or more friends, order about four dishes each and indulge in the resulting huge variety for about a tenner. Oh, and their jasmine tea is nice too.
