Disappointing`

23 Jun 08, 18:50 2* Below expectations

I returned to Bam Bou last week on the strength that I loved the food on my last visit. Admittedly the gap has been about 7 years, but it stood out in my memory as a place for great food and service.

The food was just ok. I had the sea bream, which had great flavour, but was tepid. The beef was average. The only bright spark on the culinary front was the morning glory.

Service was a little out of balance: at times over-zealous with the waiters (possibly the root of the problem here as we were served by more than one) popping up repeatedly over a 10 minute period and at other times distinctly absent (it look us 20 minutes to flag a waiter to get coffees).

I wouldn't rush back here to eat - the combination of food, service and price would make Yauatcha a better option.

Maybe in another 7 years it will be worth a return visit...

My new favourite place!

30 Jan 08, 12:08 5* Beyond expectations

Oh. My. God. The food here is to DIE for. We had such a fantastic meal here, I'll definitely be going back. It's one of those places that is great for special occasions- it won't disappoint.

The har gau are highly recommended, as was the vegetarian curry, and the pan fried black sea bass. Everyone around the table was rapturous about the coconut rice. And the desserts? Chocolate spring rolls? I mean come on. They must eat those in heaven.

It really isn't all that expensive, either. And the staff are perfect- composed, polite, efficient, but they make you feel a bit special. I loved it.

Vietnamese bonanza!

23 Jul 07, 18:51 5* Beyond expectations

Went to this little hideaway for my best mates 21st birthday and I was mightily impressed. The evening began with cocktails in the top floor bar, reached by ascending several old rickety wooden staircases, really authentic and cool with all sorts of traditional French-Vietnamese items decorating the walls. We then moved downstairs into a private room for what can only be described as a feast, and what an amazing one it was! Not once was there nothing on the table! The staff busily took care of everything and your glass is always full of wine! They brought out plate after plate of delicious Vietnamese food, including steamed soya beans, crispy rolls, Asian fishcakes and that was just a small selection of the starters! We then had ginger chicken with chilli and cashews, and a fish dish and a vegetable curry, followed by a selction of desserts, tea and coffee and chocolates, all washed down with loads more lovely white wine!

Top nosh and a top night!

On Another level!

06 Jul 07, 13:14 5* Beyond expectations

I was lucky enough to have had my 21st at Bam-Bou and what a place to have it! On the top floor there is a wicked little cocktail bar where they do the best mahetos ever! I have eaten in the restaurant but for my 21st we had a set menu in the private function room. Great service and amazing fusion food. All at very good value for the really high standards of food!

BamBou

Lovley modern Asian restaurant in the busy Charlotte street srea of bars and restaurants. This has many floors with a rsetaurant on the Grd floor and 1st floor, 2 function rooms on the second floor and a bar on the third floor serving cocktails. The decor is very dark and dusty with lots of Asian furniture and paintings on the walls. Function set menu is really good value, £12.00 for 5 courses.
