great disappointment

Well below expectations
my kids wanted to see there the Prime Minister lived ... so we made a special trip to Number 10. Unlike when I was a kid, you can no longer get any where near the frnt door. Armed guards at huge gates at the end of the street prevent you from even getting a glimpse. How things have changed in 20 yesrs. I remember having my photo taken with the cop on the door when I was in my teens!

You can't get anywhere near the front of number 10, you have to stand at the end of the road behing locked gates being guarded by 20 armed police men. really dissapointed you can't get any closer.

I'm always amazed to see crowds of people crowding around the gates and staring up the street when all they're ever going to see is a front door! It's no work of art, a photo really will do just as well. And surely all those MPs going in and out don't need a car to get them back to the office, it's only down the road!

You Wont Get Anywhere Near It

Well below expectations
If you want to check this place out the best plan is to start off in local politics, then work your way up through your local labour or conservative society to become an MP then maybe one day you will be elected. I wouldnt choose the LibDem route though. Seriously, you cant get near this place - especially in the current climate of terrorism... there's a massive gate at one end of the street so I would definitely not recommend it to tourists. Check out Big Ben and the Houses Of Parliament instead.

Boring

A major dissapointment... that gag was much more relevant when John Major was in power... how about
Gordon Bennet it's boring. With the big gate meaning you can't go down there due to security risks. you can stand and peer through the bars though and catch a glimps of a policeman looking very bored

Downing Street does look very cool from the outside, and a good few years back (when John Major was PM) we were on a school trip and got let inside Downing Street to go and wait for John to come outside and meet us! Eventually he came outside to say hello, and the press set about snapping away so we ended up in all the papers and on the news it was all very exciting, my gran still has a copy. I'm not sure she would treasure it so much if it had Gordon Brown on it.
But generally speaking, nice place.

The real deal, not a tourist attraction.

Downing Street is gated and heavily secured as you might expect. For obvious reasons it's not open to the general public, so don't rock up thinking you can buy a ticket for a tour around the PM's place of work. But you can stand beyond the gate and watch the comings and goings - who knows, you might see a familiar face or that of a cabinet member arriving or departing.
