Great location

The Mash Tun is in a fantastic location right near the Pavilion. I was here last night and had a thoroughly good time! The atmosphere is buzzy and fun, with a real mixture of people. There is a large outdoor seating area if you're a smoker.

Very studenty....

I have always liked the atmosphere in this pub, it has a quirky feel to it and as it is quite small it always has a buzzing atmosphere. Very popular with students and young folk, with people spilling out on to the street. There is quite a large seating area outside, which is great in the summer. Also, they have a great game called 'Celebrity Deathwall' (I think it's called that) - pay a pound and pick a celeb who is next to pop their clogs and if you get it right you win the money pot! A great twist!

Great if you're a student...

...but not so great if you're not! It's loud, a bit grungey but strangely homely. I used to come in here an awful lot and have too much of a good time on Hooegarden. They still do this fine white beer, but I have matured considerably and left those heady drinking days behind me.

So much Potential; Must Try Harder

29 Nov 07, 15:47 2* Below expectations

Few pubs in Brighton have quite so misguided a sense of their own trendiness as the Mash. It seems to be part of the pub's schtick to have utterly useless, disinterested, humourless bar staff. Every time you go in although the bodies behind the bar will be different - although always pretty - the attitude will be frustratingly familiar.

So getting served has always been something of a task, even when the sole soul at the bar. Since the complete pedestrianisation of Bond Street the crowd has spilled outside, multiplied and made even attempting an approach to the bar as daunting a task as ... *wracks brain for relevant cultural reference*...delousing Amy Winehouse? Being Heather Mills' psychotherapist? (Disappointing, must do better next time)

It's a shame because when taken as a space alone the Mash is great. Size-wise it's small enough to feel intimate without being cramped; the decor is pretentious but no more so than anywhere else in Brighton; there's enough furniture and it's comfortable.

It's also a great location: right next to the Dome and within easy reach of pretty much everywhere in central Brighton. i really do want to like this pub but....

Unfortunately atmosphere is really what makes or breaks a pub and it's where the Mash collapses like a moist quiche. There are at least six superior pubs within 30 seconds of this one so there's really no reason to bother. Try Fitzherberts next door.

Mash Tun

27 Oct 07, 14:45 4* Above expectations

Located perfectly in the centre of Brighton, and offering one of the best outdoor seating areas Brighton has to offer, Mash Tun is a hub for students and pre-clubbers. It also has a quirky upstairs lounge area with cool looking furniture. But more than anything else, as its name suggests, it serves tasty grub (bangers and mash need I say), at surpirsingly reasonable prices for Brighton.
