BLUU Restaurant – Birmingham

I quite fancy fish and chips… said my friend as we decided to take up an offer published in the Birmingham Post to dine at a discount price in the new ‘BLUU’ restaurant recently opened on Summer Row. Upon entering we were delighted by the modern retro/funky style décor, lots of chrome and bright reds mixed with lime green and chocolate browns, enough to get your appetite going in itself…

We weren’t approached by the staff directly but quickly found someone and were swiftly seated at a table for two in the restaurant area overlooking the canal. Menu’s were delivered and details given of items not available. We explained that we had a voucher to use which included a bottle of wine, given the option of red or white we chose white and soon had a deliciously chilled bottle of South African Chenin Blanc which tasted fresh and fruity with a zingy twist.

We opted to share a starter of Chicken Liver Parfait which came with an absolutely delicious pear and vanilla chutney, how unusual this was, sweet but very complimentary with toasted onion bread which was fresh and warm.

Both had the Beer Battered Fish and Fat Chips with Homemade Chunky Tartare sauce and Pea Puree. The fish was actually Hake, a huge portion of meaty white fish covered in a crisp golden batter accompanied by an upmarket version of mushy peas ‘Pea Puree’, brightly coloured and tasted maybe just a little too minty for my liking. Paired up with delicious ‘fat’ homemade chips (proper job…) with tartare sauce that had a delicious bite to its flavour… all presented delightfully in little pots accompanied by stacked chips and a little swirl to the fishes tail, beautiful…!

Desert was something quite unexpected… We ordered the bread and butter pudding (to share of course), rum and rasin with vanilla bean custard was the description… The custard was actually set underneath the pudding and had an ‘egg-custard’ texture to it, topped with the lightest bread and butter pudding I’ve ever experienced, truly delightful and tasted divine….

Service was excellent, waitresses looked a little casual, the uniform seems to be jeans with a white shirt but maybe that does actually fit in with the ‘retro’ style that has been created here. Food arrived promptly, requests for extras dealt with immediately, lively and bright smiley people attending to your needs.

Drinks Menu - is fantastic, cocktail options are innovative and original, really must come back and leave the car at home to try the ‘Cherry Bliss’. A choice of only six red or white wines makes selecting nice and simple with not too much silliness in pricing considering it’s a ‘prime location’ site.

Food Options – excellent choice, suits most budgets, main courses starting from as little as £7.50. Early diner’s option of two courses for £10.00 plus a bottle of wine for £10.00 should pull the punters in.

Décor – funky/modern with wonderful pictures of ladies flashing their bits in a cheeky 1950’s retro way, matching menus and wallpaper, lovely…

Facilities – rather limited, only one ladies loo which is a little squashed. I would hope that there are other facilities in the bar area as this would not be enough for a full house.

Overall an excellent experience, would definitely go back and recommend to friends, especially when the bill was discounted by 50%... Oh why didn’t I go and buy another copy of that newspaper…!

Get everything here, its literally your one stop shop, to drink, eat and dance the night away. Its cool and modern and clean inside with young funky waiters. The restaurant has a good menu and the food has never been a disappointment. Would totally recommend.

I love it!

It looks great, the food is delicious, toilets are massive and really well decorated and clean and the staff are really friendly. It makes a nice change that they know what they're talking about when it comes to drinks and food.

It was a bit quiet when i last went, so haven't seen it when it's busy, but I will definitely be going back.

My new favourite bar in Brum!!

30 Apr 08, 12:19 5* Beyond expectations

A really great bar that has a massive dance floor downstairs and a restaurant at the back. Its decoration is 50’s style but with a modern twist. The service was excellent and all the staff were very chatty and personable. The food was cooked perfectly and was one of the best meals I have had in long time.
