Recently saw "Angels & Airwaves" at the Academy, was very pleasantly surprised. The sound quality was fantastic, the size of the venue was bigger than expected, and the whole place was clean and tidy, I must add the toilets were probably the best/cleanest I've seen in a while for a gig venue!! Well Done..

Not just for gigs

A good sized venue with a good selections of beers, and most importantly some really good acts choose to play there.
It cane be quite intimate when sold out and like any musical establishment it can get quite grim after a couple of hours.
It has two levels and if you get there early enough...it's close to a number of train stations and main bus routes....you can secure a place wherever you want, for comfort and view that means from the top tier balcony, but the main area has to be experienced.
This may not be important to most...but they sell Red Stripe lager, thats a sign of class

As expected
At the end of the day, if you like the band - chances are that you're going anyway, but don't be put off by the place...
This is an alright venue, it has plenty of space and is even two-tiered - but a bit grim if you don't like the act on-stage!
It seems well kept, and the bar staff are on the ball

Great for gigs

I know you can visit brum Academy when a gig isn't playing, but I think gigs is where this venues strength is. All tickets are generally considered to be "open" tickets, ie. first come, first served, and if you get there early you can get a fantastic viewing point for some premier names in the music business. I've twice been front row (close enough to touch them, almost) for shiny toy guns, and once for Groove Armada, and both times the early arrival has been well worth it, especially considering the fab pictures you can get from the front row. Drinks are dirt cheap in here and there always seems to be a good crowd and a fun vibe. Recommended 100% for the gig goer and anyone into music.

I love going to the academy, ive seen loads of brilliant bands there including Kings of Leon, Jet, Ocean Colour Scene, Kaiser Cheifs, The Twang, Babyshambles and The Charalatans. Its a great venue, just the right size, it usually get pretty rough at the front so if you want to join in the moshing and get all sweaty you can, or if you wanna stay out the way theres still a good view from the back. The club night are always good too, Ramshackle on a Friday is always a alcohol induced riot. Only thing to be aware of the drinks are alot more expensive on gig nights!!!

A reasonably sized venue for quite big name and up and coming acts yet to fill out stadiums. It's located fairly close to New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill Stations. Tickets do get sold fairly quickly and the place gets packed but it's definetly somehwhere to check out to see your favourite group before they make it too big !

Located in Birmingham city centre, this place hosts a huge number of gigs all through out the year. Here, you'll get both local and international stars of all sorts performing. Both unknown, upcoming bands and well established bands tend to play. The Academy is mainly famous for showcasing new and unknown bands before they hit the mainstream so its definitely worth checking out the listings and pre-booking your tickets for the gigs of your choice. Highly recommended.
