You don't need to be told what a weatherspoons is like, the surroundings are all pretty familiar. The significance of this one is that there are so few bars at the shopping end of town this looks like the only option! If you are happy with weatherspoons stay put but if you're after more comfortable surroundings head away from the shops towards the mailbox / brindley place.

Decent Pub This

This might be a chain but has a realy individual feel to it, its layout certainly isnt the same as most Wetherspoons and attracts a young professional clientele.

Pretty good pub

The best thing about this pub is its location, great for meeting people from work as is smack bang in the centre and a good meeting point generally. Wetherspoons chain so you know what you're getting but for social gatherings you can't get much better.

Located at the top of Corporation Street this is a good pub for meeting friends or a drink after work but does get busier in the evenings. Also quite an older crowd but not too noisy and generally a good atmosphere.

Square Peg

A Wetherspoons pub this, but one with a good atmosphere, the longest bar in the country (apparently) and lots of seats so you can spend your time getting twisted on the cheap drinks. Like all Wetherspoons, the drinks are cheap in comparison to most pubs, the selection is extensive and there's always plenty of staff to make sure you get served quickly. Generally rather full of older clientele, on a Friday and Saturday night you can spot the Academy/pre-Snobs crowd easily- clearly coming to get their fill of cheap booze before the real clubbing starts. The bouncers are keen on checking IDs, so make sure you take yours, I'm 25 and I still get ID'ed every time I go to the Peg, so don't surprised if this happens to you. It's a pretty standard Wetherspoons- they are all pretty much exactly the same, but this one is nice and big and is a sure bet for a few cheeky snifters before a big night out.
