My or Your?
Rik L. says:
The welovelocal crew went to the Future of Web Apps Expo last week and one of the talks was about the use of copy on websites. The nice lady said that we (web site owners) should be using "Your" instead of "My".
What do you think? Should welovelocal be using "Your Blackbook" and "Your Groups" instead of "My Blackbook/Groups"? Would it make more sense?
Paul D. says:
I think "My" gives the user a sense of ownership, I know when I use welovelocal it feels like my personal space on the site. If we were to call it "Your Blackbook" it would feel like someone is telling you it's yours as apose to you saying it's yours. If you think about it, when you look on the desktop of your computer, the icon doesn't say "Your computer" it says "My computer"!!
Rik L. says:
True, but it is *my* computer... there's still a bit of separation between the operating system and the internet I think...
Plus, it doesn't help that there's millions of websites doing different things whereas there's only a handful of operating systems
Personally, I prefer "Your", but I'm not always right on these issues!
Daniel B. says:
Yeah but you think you are!
I like your too, but I get Paul's point.
Leave it up to David....
David M. says:
I don't really think it makes any difference. Did she just say "it should be "Your"" or did she actually give any substantive reasons behind changing it?
Rik L. says:
She said it was to do with the fact that the computer is mine but the internet isn't yours, so the internet is displaying *your* things (even though they are *my* things). Also, she said it was to do with the fact that it's easier to get the whole website copy in context that way.
But, yeah, it's not a massive change either way, just thought it would be interesting to bring up.
David M. says:
Mmm I think it's a subjective point I'd question the importance of it really. I don't think it's worth changing.
Rik L. says:
Just as an example, within *my* blackbook, it says *you* have created the group...
Lorraine L. says:
I don't care whether it's says My or Your.
Some people think too much about stuff!
Daniel B. says:
We have to worry about things like this, if we don't no one else will and the world of welovelocal as we know it would implode.
My vote is for 'your'
Adam K. says:
'Your' all the way!
It may not seem like a big deal but saying my groups just feels wrong.
