The best places to live...
Fifi C. says:
East, North, South, West...what';s your experience been like? Would you recommend Clapham, or Ealing...or avoid Belsize Park unless your daddy owns a football club?
Let's get the ball rolling....
Rik L. says:
When I moved down to Lahndan, I was lucky to get a flat in Angel, Islington... yes, it was tiny (and it still is, as I'm still living there) but it's cheap and handy for getting places
If I moved down again, I'd still live somewhere central in a tiny flat, because you get the authenic London experience - no point coming to live in London and then living in Zone 6, is there?
Helen E. says:
Oh Rik is that a dig at me? Silly old me for living Croydon - as out of town as you can get!
I choose Croydon, just outside London as it is super cheap and super connected. Transport is really great so you hardly notice your not in central London. However, I am moving again soon and it will be to somewhere like Highbury or Islington - you do get quite a bit for you money here, and as Rik says it is pretty close to everything.
Fifi C. says:
I love East Finchley - it's just a little too quiet for me at the moment. Mostly yummy mummies and older couples, but only 17 mins to kings cross and with hamstead heath and lots of woods nearby to play in.
I'm thinking of heading down to Clapham or London Bridge area next year - that's where the rest of the Durham brigade are, and has a more buzzy feel. I feel bad for betraying the north london camp but with the likes of Ms Moss, Jonathan Ross and Ricky Gervais as neighbours I've realised I'm in a little over my head. I need greasy spoons and rubbish nightclubs - not bespoke fireplace shops.
Rik L. says:
@Helen: No it wasn't a dig, at all, but you obviously agree with me because you're moving to Highbury :P
@Fifi: Didn't realise there was another Durham graduate here! When did you graduate? What college were you at?
Fifi C. says:
I was at Cuths but ingratiated myself with Castle from third term of first year onwards!
I graduated last summer, and I'm still not quite over it.
Guess what I studied:
English Literature.
How predictable!
What about you?
Rik L. says:
That explains the 5 star review of the Undercroft then! You should have integrated yourself into a better college, like Mildert ;)
I graduated back in 2005 with a maths degree, I've been down in London since graduating (in fact, the Monday after graduating) and I've been working on welovelocal since December '06
Fifi C. says:
Hmm...mildert...I never really made it up the hill.
what a fabulous job you have. Did you find it difficult starting out? Many of us can't find decent work for love nor money, despite having a degree from a top University (and plenty of charm).
It's a tough life being a grad.
Daniel B. says:
Sorry to but in so late but as far as I'm concerned if you are a recent grad and want to live in North London, there are a handful of places to choose from.
Stoke Newington / Newington Green
Finsbury Park
Stroud Green
Kentish Town
Between Balls Pond Road and Islington Green
that said you may be able to find somewhere more central, but you're money won't go far. As for further out? Well you end up paying it in time and tube journeys..
