Review of The Garden Pharmacy

15 Apr 08, 21:17

No doctor? No Boots? 4*

Where do you turn in the heart of the west end? The Garden Pharmacy on Long Acre is the best place to pick up a remedy.

Sometimes your Boots opts to give you cut price everything when sometimes you are poorly and want to be reassured by paying a little bit extra for something.

Along with the pharmacy at the back there's a chemist full of goodies; pampering products like Burts Beets sits along your E45 style products or hair loss treatments.

They also have notably top of the range beauty counters like YSL and impressively Clarins. Downstairs is a whole Clarins experience.

no need to feel poorly any more....

Review of Post Office

Biggest is not always bestest 1*

Despite this post office with it's prime location being the biggest I've ever seen and with the most cubby holes for serving staff - this post office has the longest, slowest queues I have ever seen.

I always seem to go here when it's raining and that means it smells too.

Yes the area has a huge catchment for post office deeds with lots of businesses so may excuse the queues a bit.

But it's still rubbish and a rubbish experience.

Review of Sandwich Express

Note for Summer - sandwiches in the park 3*

Sandwich express is a stone's throw from Leicester Square and prime route for a trip to St. James Park to eat your newly purchased sandwhiches.

Simple and cheap. Baps, bread or baguettes with lots of filling choices. A queue is quick, as despite the shop being 4ft by 4ft it has about 6 friendly, eager, serving staff who are quick with the salt and pepper.

Drink before Charing X train 3*

Tucked just off Villieurs street, avoiding tourists and workers there's a pub that doesn't get too busy early evening.

With average pub prices for that area, the service is pleasant, the decor isn't offensive and the cleanliness is good. All in all a decent gastro style pub.

Have sampled the platters, although a touch pricey, they do the job. A good selection of wines and beers.

Notably a very popular pub quiz upstairs on a Wednesday. I've never been, but the fact that you have to book suggests that it may be good ;)

Review of The International

15 Apr 08, 20:42

2 Things to note 3*

There's two things worth reviewing about the International. Lunch and late bar.

With views of the post office and trafalga square, this two floor bar/restaurant is quite anonymous on this busy street. With tall impressive windows and fancy flowers in the window it is often bypassed by the average joe for fear of getting stung by £10 drinks.

Upstairs is a simple restaurant full of round social tables and cosy tables for 2. Monday - Thursday it has an impressive £3 menu - £3 being the cheapest meal of course - like your small bowl of thai curry, or your fishcakes or your goats cheese salad - add a couple of pounds for supplements and you have steak sandwhiches and more impressive sandwhiches. Very good value and tasty. Be warned - the food may be cheap but be careful about drinks, stick to water. A simple coke will set you back £2 and a bottle of beer £3 which doubles your lunch cost.

Downstairs is a lounge bar full of sofas and low stools to relax. This is one of the only bars in the Charing Cross Road/St. Martin's Lane area that stays open late, which is a good find if you want to carry on drinking after pub closing - so who cares about price or service !!

Review of Gabys Deli

15 Apr 08, 09:38

Pitta and salad for £3 - tasty! 4*

This small salad bar with Middle East, Greek and Italian origins (apparently) - is amazing value and very convenient for Leicester Square and Charing Cross road area for a quick bite to eat. Huge bowls of delicious and colourful salads to fill pitaswith meat or vegetarian options too. Salad selection costs three pounds which you choose yourself from an enticing deli counter. The staff are friendly and greet you well if you are a regular, and the place is full of noisy, happy people.

Only problems is the narrow entrance which is the only place wehre you can choose your feast and is a bit of a pain.

All in all though Gaby's is good.

Review of Tyler Jenkins

Welsh silver jewellry 4*

If you are looking to treat yourself or buy a special gift then visit Tyler Jenkins for the most beautiful welsh silver jewellry.

The shop is owned by a family and has grown from a stall in Swansea Market to a very stylish shop in the city centre near the bus station.

Although it's predominantly welsh silver, the varying styles mean that all tates are catered for. Goth, celtic, Tiffany's style, Amber, leather. Prices range from products but it's very good value for money and presented in lovely packaging even if you are buying for yourself.

Review of Primark

The best of all the Primarks 4*

If you are caught on the Primark wave and find yourself furnishing your wardrope every couple of weeks with basics from Primark then this Primark in Tooting is the best of them all.

Situated just 2 ticks from Tooting tube station - it's a big old Primark and doesn't get too busy. Notably it doesn't look like a jumble sale a couple of hours after opening.

Also if you are like me and sometimes find Primark staff unhelpful and almost look bored then you may be surprised at the staff here - maybe they've been on training. They are helpful and serve you with a smile.

Avoid Primark in Oxford Street visit Tooting instead - far more pleasurable experience and you are bound to pick up loads of bargains.

Review of West Cross Inn

15 Apr 08, 09:18

See the sea and eat fish 3*

If you like fish and you are down Mumbles way then visit the West Cross Inn.

Even though the average age of the diners is more above 50, than below 50 it is a pleasant dining experience.

If you remember, book a table with a seaview and it makes all the difference. If you don't book a table you could be sitting in the bar eating your dinner and collecting your own cultery and sauces.

The food is delicious, an extensive fresh fish menu at reasonable prices, served by friendly local owners.

The West Cross Inn too is perfect for Sunday drinking especially in good weather as it's perched on Swansea Bay leading into the Mumbles.

Review of Tuk Tuk

14 Apr 08, 22:10

Noodles in Soho 3*

If you want quick and cheap Thai then visit Tuk Tuk. After strutting down the length of Old Compton Street, Tuk Tuk is towards Wardour Street End, near Pauls and Boulevard.

Don't expect ice in your drink, or your food to come at the same time. It's ready when it's ready.

The staff are friendly and eager to get you seated, feed you and then say goodbye.

Lunchtimes are full of casual shoppers and local workers. And it's a good place to eat alone without feeling on show.

I recommend Chicken Pad Thai for £3.90. Bargain.
