Review of Olive Tree
12 Nov 07, 12:53
Cheap cafe food
This is a cheap alternative to the student friendly places on the high street. Olive Tree does a good fry up and my personal favourite of chips, beans and cheese. Proper hangover food in a friendly family run place. It lacks the buzzy atmosphere of other local cafes but is cheaper, and if you're feeling horribly hungover, is a good place to hide away.

Review of Martins
12 Nov 07, 12:51
Yummy pasties
Martin's is a proper Northern bakery. They do made to order sandwiches and jacket potatoes as well as great mini shepherd's pies and a big selection of pasties and pies. The staff have been there for years and are very friendly. As you'd expect Martin's is very very cheap.

Review of Simply

Good, cheap sandwiches
Simply is a typical sandwich shop that does it's job well. All the usual fillings are available, as well as jacket potatoes and soup. They deliver if you live/work near which is handy. Food is cheap, definitely good value.

Review of The Didsbury
12 Nov 07, 12:45
Country pub in Manchester
I love the Didsbury. It's a big old pub and restaurant that is guaranteed to have a fire going. The food is served in hearty portions and the Sunday roasts are yummy. This place has a real family feel. Sit outside in the beer garden in the summer or cosy up by the fire in the winter. Good value and friendly service.

Review of Fuel
12 Nov 07, 12:42
Yummy veggie food
Fuel is a popular Withington bar/cafe. It has a vegetarian menu and all of the sandwiches (ciabattas etc) are yummy. The veggie breakfast is ok, but I reckon you're probably better of in Solomon's across the road for this. The atmoshpere is intimate and very studenty. Nice for an afternoon coffee or a few drinks at the weekend. Keep an eye out for bands playing upstairs.

Review of The Turnpike
12 Nov 07, 12:39
Working man's pub
The Turnpike is nothing if not minimal: there is no music, no atmosphere and very few customers. The people you do see in this place have clearly been coming every day for the past 50 years. I think they got a shock, therefore, when my friends and I turned up, and started coming quite regularly. The reason? Beer is £1.20 a pint. With prices like this you can quickly forget where you are and create your own atmosphere. Definitely an experience.

Review of The Ladybarn
12 Nov 07, 12:37
Strange pub
The Ladybarn has been open for over a year now but is still finding it's feet. It's a mix of locals and students, but is definitely aiming for the more upmarket crowd (which isn't helped by the two or three locals who are always in there propping up the bar). The Ladybarn has random bands playing and the odd dj night. The menu changes a lot but the food is always good, and there is even a separate dining room. Staff are very friendly, and make sure you keep an eye out for the Johnny Depp lookalike. Don't be surprised though if they have run out of usual pub drinks - like red wine for instance. In my opinion the quirks it has adds to its charm, but others might not agree.

Review of Canadian Charcoal Pit

Amazing burgers
If you're drunk and hungry in Withington, head here. The flame grilled burgers are second to none, and the chatty staff will always make you laugh. Other things are good too, but it's always a mistake not to choose one of the burgers. Open late and very cheap.

Review of Solomon Grundy
12 Nov 07, 12:31
Solomon Grundy
This bar/restaurant is in the heart of Withington and so is a hub of students, and those that are trying to pretend that they are still students. It's always busy and has a buzzy atmosphere. Drinks aren't cheap, but this place is nicer than other local pubs. The food is great - there's a big menu that's reasonably priced and the portions are huge. I can particularly recommend the burgers and the potato skins. Oh, and it's useful to know that they don't take cards.

Review of Saints & Scholars
12 Nov 07, 12:28
Slightly overpriced but fun restaurant
Saints and Scholars is a very pretty restaurant, with a mish mash of old lanterns, photos and trinckets adorning the walls. The menu is varied - from steak to fajitas to lasagne, and the food is ok, not amazing. Admittedly it is in Didsbury (a pricey area of Manchester) but even so I think it's a bit overpriced. The overall experience is pleasant, and I'd recommend it if was just a bit cheaper.
