Review of Jim Garrahy's Fudge Kitchen

13 Nov 07, 21:37

Worth its weight in fudge 3*

Despite the fact that York is not particularly famed for its fudge, the City boasts a significant number of fudge shops - and this one is probably the best. Staff lure tourists in with delicious free samples - which is a good trick, because once you're in there you feel too guilty to run away without buying some. Pricey as it is - you won't have tasted anything like it. Take some home for the rellies at christmas for an authentic taste of York.

Review of Barnitts

What a find! 5*

Having been informed of the legendary status of this establishment even before I had set foot in York, it seems only right to pay homage to this veritable treasure trove. With its extensive hardware, gardening, decorating, lighting and even pet departments there is really very little that this place doesn't sell! Whether you're looking for a light bulb or a goldfish bowl you are almost certainly guaranteed to find it here - or have it found for you, as it is so extensive you may find yourself lost in the fairy light grotto. Never mind though, the helpful staff will soon help you locate your desired item and probably a whole load of extras that you've spotted on your Barnitts journey!

A personal touch! 4*

This little shop located near the shambles is a great place if you're looking to get any kind of merchandise printing done. The husband and wife team are lovely and friendly and will go out of their way to be helpful and offer you a good price. If you're looking for somewhere to get your personalised novelty hen night t-shirts printed then these are your people!

Review of City Screen Cinema

A hidden treasure 4*

This is a really lovely cinema. Tucked away off Coney street, this branch of the Picture House cinemas is easy to miss, sandwiched between Pitcher and Piano and Orgasmic. Indeed this is very much a hidden treasure. Despite its sophisticated edge it shows all the major films and is also home to York's only regular comdey club on Sunday nights which has played host to some big names on the comedy circuit.

Review of Festival Of Fun

Its a barrel of laughs! 4*

This fancy dress and joke shop must make a fortune from York and York St John's students and their constant demands for fancy dress costumes. Wigs, props and full body suits are the making of many a themed night out. However, the establishment must be aware that they're on to a good thing as its quite pricey but pea shooters and plastic poos will always entertain - and you can't put a price on that!

Review of Oxfam

For a touch of vintage chic... 4*

Situated at the end of a street full of charity shops, this one is worth waiting for as it is by far the best. Although possibly more expensive than some of the others this particular branch of the charity boasts a fabulous vintage section - where retro coats, suits, dresses, shoes and handbags will please men and women alike. Fairtrade goods are also available for feel good shopping with a conscience.

Review of The Blue Bicycle

On your bike to the Blue Bike! 4*

One of the better known restaurants in York, the Blue Bicycle appears small from the outside. It is however a very good eating establishment. Although expensive (you get what you pay for), everything from the service to the decor is top notch. I'd well recommend eating here durng a stay in York but it might be worth booking in advance especially if it is a busy time of year or you are in a large group!

Review of Track Records

Support your indie record shops! 4*

With a market dominated by nationwide giants HMV and Virgin Megastores i believe a local independent record shop is worth its weight in gold. You can find anything in here anmd it is all reasonably priced. They don't have "Sales" like your high street shops but you don't need them here. Friendly, personal service helps make you feel welcome too. Help keep independent music shops alive by shopping here in York!

Review of Yates's Wine Lodge

13 Nov 07, 15:37

As expected! 3*

As with all chain pubs, Yate's in York struggles to feel too homely or special. Despite this the setting, right on the river, is lovely. The drinks are, as expected, cheap and so is the food. So you can't really complain. If you like the Yate's bar near you, you' like this one!

Review of Kennedy's

Expensive Bar 3*

Tucked away, this bar is quite expensive. On a weekend night it can be very busy though and this must be for a reason! the atmosphere is lively and bustling with loud music blaring and drinks flowing. The drinks are good, but like i mentioned youi do pay a premium price. It's pretty much what you would expect from an upmarket bar.
