Review of New Tayyab

still the best 5*

Been again this week and can confirm that this place is still A) rammed B) amazing value C) the best curry in the east end QED London D) has the most attentive and efficient staff on the down side (is there one?) the more people that know about it the longer the queues get and if you sit too near the kitchen you are half choked with throat-burning chilli fumes but even that is more than worth it And gosh I love their mango kulfi lollies

Review of Sainsburys

Now bigger, and better possibly 3*

It's a Sainsbury's so you know what it does right? and this branch just what you'd expect just right (except their plastic baskets are vile and dirty, whose great idea was that then?) plus it's not a scary one (unless you find anywhere outside of Fulham scary that is).

Anyway my point about this branch just behind the Idea Store (that's a library to you and me) on Whitechapel Road is being expanded and looks like it might be quite good once finished. Bigger certainly. Better would be nice too, or just clean those baskets anyway.

Okay so today they were unable to cope with the numbers (we all shop at about a quarter to 5pm on a Sunday round here, didn't you know?) but handing round chocolates to keep us sweet was a nice try at calming the hoards. And absolutely all of the till staff there are simply lovely, kind and friendly - I'm not kidding, they are wonderful, really. Or perhaps just well-trained and highly motivated to be nice.

Review of Atlantis

Art supplies heaven 4*

This is me letting you into the 'secret' every east end artist has known about for years...

Atlantis is a massive and cheap warehouse where you can buy pretty much everything the professional or amateur painter could ever need - from easels and pre-stretched canvases in all sizes plus stretchers to make up your own and every kind of paint, brush, pencil, crayon, pen, solvent and other gunk you can imagine.

They offer student discount and are pretty helpful if you can't find what you are after. Oh and the paper section is unbelievably comprehensive and very hard to resist.

It is just up behind the Bell Foundry, off Whitechapel Road. And they are open on Sundays too.

Best thing about where I live Broadway Market and Columbia Road, Victoria Park and my studio, the great transport links and that it's not as up itself as Hoxton (yet).
Worst thing about where I live The property prices are too high for mere mortals. Darn those city types and their bonuses spent on buy-to-lets.

More about me A painter into objects, words and buildings. Sensible dayjob, doing corporate words and pictures, necessitated by the scarcity of rich art patrons in this town. Pretty mad about recycling and making things grow.
