Review of Four O Nine

Hidden Gem 4*

Nearly six months old now (or longer) this is discreetly tucked away behind and on top of the Clapham North Pub in front of the Tube Station. The entrance is similarly discreet, requiring staff to buzz you in. The short stairwell leads on to a well decorated, chilled restaurant with friendly staff and excellent food. Foie gras is legendary. The wine list is fantastic and I would recommend the bar cocktails (Mojitos). It can be quite expensive depending on what you have - obviously - but it's a welcome sight to see more quality places appearing in this part of London. Perfect for a romantic night out or a place to impress people.

Banzai! 5*

OK. Described by one paper as one of the best sushi restaurants in the UK. But based in Clapham North by the Railway pub. Go up the high street near the Clapham High Street Train Station.

Not sure about the reviewer's comments but its excellent. Definately a must for all Sushi Fans and those who like other ypes of Japanese food. It's been there for nearly three years and is a bit of a stalwart.

Decor is looking teeny bit dated now but its still roomy and comfortable. Perfect for a night out with mates or that special person. Typical meal with around 5 - 6 courses and a bottle of good wine ill cost you arounf £80. Trust me though. Well well worth it.

Excellent Black Cod, Aubergine, Sushi is always fresh and the staff are very wecloming. A touch slow onn occasion though but this is mainly onn the weekends when it gets quite packed. Some times limits dining times as a result.

Avoid like the plague on Valentine's night as the place check by jowl full of single tables and its just too close for comfortable conversation.

Review of Bread and Roses

Give me bread and give me roses.... 5*

Bit of a bizarre one as it caters for everyone but does it really well. A really really great pub. Quirky, niche and great for people who hate clone pubs. A good outside space if you have children with lots of seating at the back and they do make them welcome here but also a great place to go if your out for the evening. Serve good food here on a Sunday often accompanied by live music - jazz, blues - and last time we went they held a real ale day with a selection of 15 different niche beers. One of my favourite pubs. Just always suprises you.

Review of Josephs Hair Design Studio

Hair you are. 4*

Always friendly, always packed but will try and make space. If you're a bloke, just need a haircut, want to read a magazine inn peace while its being done, then go here. Couldn't comment on more adventurous cuts though. Has raised its gaime quite a bit over the past few years though.

What else is there to say?

Review of The Landor Theatre

03 Aug 07, 13:16

Thank God - at last a nice original boozer 5*

So. No Buffallo Mozzarella, Sun Dried Tomatos or Ciabbatta in sight. The sort of pub that you want to go to when you want to have a nice chilled pint with a mate, play a game of pool (thats a rare thing to find nowdays) and just sit and drink. Hope this doesn't make it sound crusty as it isn't at all. Well decorated, slightly olde worlde feel but not in a bad way and has the added bonus of an indoor theatre so it does get a bit busy somedays until the audeince empties into the theatre. Haven't been to this so can't comment on this side of things. One of my favourite places in South London. Just because it has no pretentions.

Review of NatWest Cash Machine

03 Aug 07, 15:06

It works very well 3*

One of the best Cash Machines in Western Europe. Founded in 1906 this cash machine was originally under 24 hour SBS guard following threats to blow it up by the Luddites who felt that it was "the devils work".

Like many cash machines, you have to bend down slightly to use it but the screen and writing is clear. Tony, a tramp offers ad hoc technical support for a small fee but generally the system is easy to use.

It dispenses a variety of notes. The £5 one cost £5, the £10 cost a tenner and this is replicated up the denomination scale. The cost will be deducted from your bank account.

Review of The Antiquarius Antiques Centre

03 Aug 07, 17:27

Yeah but..... 3*

It is pretty good and has a lot of stuff in it and a huge number of individual concessions. BUT, and its a big but, the location means that it is as expensive as you'd think it would be. Mind you if you life in Fulham or Chelsea this wouldn't bother you. Loses a start because its really only eye candy material for most of us. Those of you with a tighter budget - go to the antiques conncessions at the end of the Northcote Road. Not the Clapham Junction End. Its better.

Review of Bodeans BBQ

A True Flesh Pot 5*

What can I say.

If you work in Soho, you'll be familar with this place. Vegans will probably firebomb this place. Renowned for the Pulled Pork, Ribs and BBQ sauce, this is not the place to go to impress your bank manager. Do not wear a white shirt. Do nnot go here on a first date. Casual atmosphere, incredibly friendly staff and most of all quick and easy. Food is excellent and well priced for what you get. Very packed at the weekends so you're unlikely to get a table in our experience after 7.00 p.m unless you book.

It gets a lot of trade in the early event before customers head off for the bars and clubs. Your girlfriends may hate it but your mates will love you for showing them the light.

Review of Robert Gastro

Oooh lala. 4*

Very odd place this. Looks like its been furnished with the contents of a fench student hall but it all works very well. Split into two sections - a cafe and a restaurant it has a really nice French feel to it. Those who can't face the uniformity of Starbucks will love whiling away a morning with a bite to eat and a coffee in a very amospheric place. Last time we went even the staff were French. The coffee is great.

It is slightly on the pricey side though. Can't vouch for the restaurant side although I have heard one bad report from about the food and the service but this was some time ago. Worth considering though if you are off to the Clapham Picture House though as it is so near.

Review of Upstairs Bar and Restaurant

Size isn't everything 5*

Agree with the previous post. This place is excellent. You'll miss it as it's so hidden.Book well ahead as it is tiny inside and since the evening standard gave it good reviews some time ago it's become increasingly popular. The food is fantastic. Only fault? The proximity of the tabels can make for interesting eavesdropping. But then the cosiness is part of the appeal.
