Review of Brighton Centre

16 Apr 08, 09:22

Brighton's biggest venue... 4*

...for music, exhibitions, conferences and the like.

Not the prettiest building on the seafront by any stretch but really does the job. I've seen some fantastic bands there from Kings of Leon to Prodigy to Hard-Fi. The acoustics are good and you get a decent view pretty much wherever you are in the arena.

The Brighton Bears used to play their home games at the Centre and it proved to be a great sports venue too. Shame the team aren't around anymore...

Every January Holiday on Ice comes to town...not my cup of tea at all but it means for a couple of weeks beforehand they open the ice rink up to the public. I went twice over Christmas just gone...loads of fun!

Unfortunately there are contstant threats to knock the building down but despite that the staff at the Brighton Centre continue to do a sterling job. I for one would be very sad to see it disappear from the seafront...although a facelift wouldn't go a miss.

Review of Barneys Bar & Canteen

16 Apr 08, 08:54

I'm a regular 4*

I heart Barneys!

This is definitely one of my favourite places to go at any time of day in Hove. I'm a picky vegetarian but cannot fault their veggie breakfast or other non-meaty options. I'm also a massive fan of their pineapple & lime smoothies and imagine my delight to discover they sell decaff tea. Not many places do you know.

You can slob on the sofas when it's quiet (you'll have to be early at the weekend to bag one of these), sit properly at the table like your mum taught you or soak up the sun on one of the pavement tables. Very continental!

The staff are real characters too...they love a chat and can be quite cheeky but that just adds to whole relaxed atmosphere of the place.

This is a place I feel very comfortable in even sitting on my own...you can take your book, newspaper, laptop or just sit back and take it all in. Love it.

Review of Terraces Bar & Grill

Once was enough 1*

My housemate took me to this restaurant because he had vouchers to spend there. The vouchers were by way of compensation for a bad experience a friend of his had had there and they need using up.

'Great...free meal' we thought...

Thank goodness we didn't have to pay. There was a strange atmosphere about the place...it may have to do with the layout of the tables. Because the building is round everyone is seated around the edge and I don't remember there being any tables in the middle which left it feeling a bit sparse. The food was really uninspiring...my chips were cold, my housemate's steak was tough and the mayo on the side looked like it had been left out of the fridge too long. Even the service left a lot to be desired.

Bear in mind that I'm usually easily-pleased...not the sort to get upset about minor flaws...but I will not eat here again.

(ps. the star is for the lovely views of the sea and Palace Pier)

Review of Nia Cafe Bar

16 Apr 08, 08:00

Not your run-of-the-mill caff... 4*

...by any stretch.

This cafe is in a class of its own if you ask me. It seems everything they offer on their menu has a nice wholesome, healthy twist. They do amazing breakfasts with fresh, good quality ingredients and you won't find a puddle of grease on your plate once you've polished it all off. I've had many a veggie breakfast there...chunky granary toast, veggie sausages, succulent grilled tomatoes, tasty mushrooms and a generous slab of halloumi. Yes...halloumi on your brekkie...genius!

Then there are the smoothies...prepared in-house and nothing but fresh fruit. You can feel the vitamins seeping into your blood-stream.

They have a branch on Trafalgar Street in Brighton too but I've not yet visited...no doubt it's equally as good.

Review of The Emperor Chinese Restaurant

16 Apr 08, 07:47

Mighty fine Chinese food. 4*

This is a pretty large Chinese restaurant but once you're all settled in one of their cosy booths it feels nice and intimate. I've eaten their several times with friends who live in Burgess Hill. They're real regulars and we're treated like royalty from the moment we walk in the door. The staff can't do enough for you without being overbearing...the service is impeccable.

As for the food...it really is some of the best Chinese food I've ever tasted...and there's plenty of it. There's loads of choice even for veggies and they will cook dishes to your liking even if they're not on the menu.

I really look forward to eating there as I know I'll leave a very happy, satiated girl. It's so good my mate's even having her wedding reception there...now that should be recommendation enough for you!

Review of Otello Restaurant

15 Apr 08, 18:41

One of many... 3*

...Italian restuarants in Hove but this one gives you a really good feed for a decent price. What I'm basically trying to tell you is BIG PORTIONS!

I'm a veggie and never disappointed by the choice available to me pasta or pizza wise but my carnivorous mates tell me the Rossini steak is bloomin' amazing. It's this big chunk of fillet steak balanced on a generous crouton topped with pate and smothered with a creamy, rich brandy and mushroom sauce (think I could get a job writing this stuff?!). Doesn't appeal to me personally but I've seen people literally dribbling over it.

If you're so hungry you could eat a scabby horse then this is the place for you. And it doesn't just fill a big hole...it does it with very hearty and tasty Italian fare.

Review of Drusillas Zoo Park

15 Apr 08, 09:10

Top Zoo! 5*

Everyone in Sussex loves Drusillas...it's just really great fun for everyone whether you have kids or not. And it's family run so the owners care deeply about the animals and their protection.

From monkeys to meerkats...llamas to lemurs...you'll get your fill of the animal kingdom on a day out here. It's all very educational too and there's a Thomas the Tank Engine ride around the park for the youngest of your family.

At lunch time there are huge picnic areas for you to chill out in and a massive play area for the kids...and some of the adults actually...!

You have to go...it's the law.

Review of Ashoka Tandoori Restaurant

15 Apr 08, 08:38

Quality Ruby 4*

There are a fair few curry houses in Hove but this is my new favourite. I've been to most of the others but have now come to the conclusion after giving it considerable thought that this is the best!

They just do really great curries that always taste incredibly fresh. Also they'll cook your dish exactly how you want it even if it isn't on the menu.

To my mind you can always judge a good Indian restaurant by its poppadums...big and crispy...perfect! It's very popular with the locals...I was there on a recent Thursday and by the time we left there wasn't a spare table in the place. The service is top notch and you get decent chocolates on your bill instead of the usual After 8 rubbish...you can't argue with that.

Review of Fishbourne Roman Palace

15 Apr 08, 07:27

A little bit of history. 4*

For those of you that don't know...there's a roman palace in West Sussex! It was discovered in the 1960s when digging began for a water trench. They excavated the site and eventually opened it up to the public.

I'd been a few times as a kid and then took my history-obssessed boyfriend there a few months ago. We both loved it! Inside they map out the history of the site and how it was found. Plenty of interactive stuff to keep the kids interested too. We were particularly lucky on the day we visited as there was a live gladiator show in the grounds...you can find out about their specific events at their website.

Admission is about 7 quid for adults and half that for kids and there's plenty of parking.

Definitely worth a trip especially on a rainy day as most of it's indoors. And with any good museum...there's a great gift shop. I do love a gift shop...

Review of David Lloyd Leisure Club

14 Apr 08, 18:59

For the gym-bunny in you. 3*

I've been a member at David Lloyd for almost three years and although it's damn expensive I do make the most of it. I'm not one for pounding the treadmill but do love their classes. I do a mixture of stuff from Body Combat to Aqua Aerobics...I try and get in there 3 times a week if I can.

I'm definitely not a natural when it comes to exercise and don't live for the gym by any stretch (no pun intended). I make myself go and actually quite enjoy it when I get there. The instructors are all really good and keep you well-motivated. The facilities in general are decent...large gym with all the equipment you need (well as far as I can tell), pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room etc. There are no racquet sports at the Brighton branch unlike some of their clubs. All in all it is what you'd expect from a leisure club but I highly recommend the classes...yes and for the blokes too...oh and there's free parking. A bonus in Brighton!
