Review of Ark Removals

01 May 08, 10:53

Get movin' 5*

I can't even remember how I stumbled across Ark Removals but I'm so glad I did! I used them them for my last move from a basement flat to the first floor flat I'm in now. They shifted everything carefully and effortlessly. They turned up exactly when they said they would and had the job done in no time.

Before the move took place they dropped off lots of packing materials (they do offer a packing service too if you haven't the time yourself) including tissue paper and boxes. Moving is stressful enough without having problems with your removal people. That wasn't something we had to worry about. Ark are professional and efficient. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Review of Caffe Fresco

Big baps... 4*

...and baguettes...and sandwiches...and jacket spuds and the like.

This is a lovely cafe on Boundary Road in Portslade...I work nearby and it's the perfect spot for a mid-morning snack...or lunch...or an afternoon snack for that matter. The food is well prepared and very fresh. If you happen to be hungry and in the glamorous town of Portslade you can't go far wrong here.

Review of Cineworld

30 Apr 08, 07:13

The better of the two 3*

Cineworld at Brighton Marina is much newer and cleaner than the other city centre alternative (you know the one I mean). It does everything a cinema should do...and the parking is free. This is a big deal as it can be damn expensive going to the flicks these days. I know they're no different to any other cinema but drinks and snacks are pricey so if you're hungry make sure you visit the cash machine first!

That said the seats are big and comfy and the staff are friendly and helpful. A much more pleasant experience than you might have at the 'other one'.

Review of Frankie & Benny's

Does the job 3*

Frankie & Benny's is of course a chain but I've only been to the Brighton one at the Marina. It's not my favourite restaurant by any stretch but the staff are lively and efficient and the food is as you'd expect...pizzas, burgers, pasta etc. From a personal point of view they don't have a great deal of choice for veggies. Their mushroom ravioli is very tasty though!

This is the perfect place for families...it's the kind of place I'd have loved as a kid. So to that end there's always lots of nippers in there. Oh and birthdays...always at least three of them in the restuarant on a weekend. You don't have to join in with the singsongs that the staff fire up...but I usually do. Well why not?!

Review of Rendezvous Casino

26 Apr 08, 09:50

No more bets please! 4*

I'm not exactly a regular casino visitor but this is my favourite of those on offer around Brighton. I've been a few times in the past couple of years and have had a really great time. They expect a certain dress code of you at the door which can be a bit of a pain...but I guess it means they keep the wrong'uns out. Always a bonus.

The drinks are very reasonable...but then they want you to spend your money at the tables of course...not at the bar. It's got a really relaxed feel to it...actually you feel a bit like you're on a cruise ship. It's that kind of decor...oh and they have a singer in the bar some nights which adds to the whole 'cruise' vibe if you know what I mean.

The croupiers are helpful if you're new to their game...and the other punters give you a hand too. Just be sensible though kids!

Review of The Floating Pagoda

26 Apr 08, 09:44

Floaty Boaty 3*

The fact this Chinese restaurant is on a boat moored up at the Marina is of course the big novelty factor. It just feels a bit more exciting to eat your tea on the water for some reason, doesn't it?!

I've only been there the once for a mate's birthday and was impressed by the food and the service. They looked after us well. It is a little on the expensive side though to be honest...in fact I'm not sure I've been to a more expensive Chinese restaurant before. Oh and when you get back on dry land and you do feel a bit weird for a while...! Good fun though...if you've just been paid.

Review of Bowlplex

24 Apr 08, 07:54

Technical hitches aplenty! 2*

I have been to the Bowlplex at Brighton Marina maybe 3 or 4 times. I have to admit this review is based purely on the poor experience I had the last time I visited only a couple of months ago.

There was a large group of us there really up for having a laugh and getting involved in some healthy competition between mates. Despite booking lanes in advance it took them a while to find us lanes next to each other. It didn't take long for things to start breaking...I think 3 of our 4 lanes broke down in total. It was all a bit of a shame really. We did get moved eventually but some of us didn't even get time to finish our game.

We did still have a right laugh though...and when things go right...you can't beat a good bit of ten-pin.

Review of David Lloyd Leisure Club

14 Apr 08, 18:59

For the gym-bunny in you. 3*

I've been a member at David Lloyd for almost three years and although it's damn expensive I do make the most of it. I'm not one for pounding the treadmill but do love their classes. I do a mixture of stuff from Body Combat to Aqua Aerobics...I try and get in there 3 times a week if I can.

I'm definitely not a natural when it comes to exercise and don't live for the gym by any stretch (no pun intended). I make myself go and actually quite enjoy it when I get there. The instructors are all really good and keep you well-motivated. The facilities in general are decent...large gym with all the equipment you need (well as far as I can tell), pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room etc. There are no racquet sports at the Brighton branch unlike some of their clubs. All in all it is what you'd expect from a leisure club but I highly recommend the classes...yes and for the blokes too...oh and there's free parking. A bonus in Brighton!
