Review of Devonshire Park

28 Apr 08, 20:41

Traditional 3*

The Devonshire Park Theatre has been around for donkey's and is everything you'd expect from a traditional english performance venue.

I've only been at Christmas time for panto but really enjoyed the productions. The auditorium itself is quite lovely and it feels nice and intimate. That may have to do with how close the seats are to each other! It can also get a bit warm when it's full especially if there's a full house. If you love the theatre though...this place is a must.

Review of Funktion Rooms

25 Apr 08, 23:09

THE place to go in the 'bourne 5*

Funktion Rooms is Eastbourne's newest and coolest nightclub...by a million miles. The former House of Horrors (sorry Commons) has been completely transformed. If you haven't been since the birth of Funktion you simply won't recognise the place. For fear of sounding like a 17 year old boy...the sound system is awesome too.

This is a proper club. With proper DJs. And proper acts. It's just what the town desperately needed...I went when it first opened and you could literally hear the collective sigh of relief from the local clubbing crowd.

There's a reassuringly long queue out the door at weekends...so make sure you take your coat kids. Oh sorry my mistake...you don't need a coat when you're under 25. I was like that once...

Review of Kings & Jax Bar

25 Apr 08, 22:45

Sticky floors 3*

Granted I haven't been to Kings for a couple of years but this is the kind of club you go to with a bunch of mates who aren't particularly bothered about what they're dancing to so long as they've had a skinful.

It's good fun...packed out at weekends and dishes up a good selection of cheese. Yes the floors are sticky...yes the loos are manky but you will have a laugh if you're with the right people. You might even get hit on by a teenager too...bonus!

Review of Clay Oven

25 Apr 08, 22:26

Late night delights 4*

No...not like that you mucky pup.

This is like your common or garden kebab shop/chippy but just that bit better. Even at busy times (anytime after 11pm on weekends) the food is of pretty good quality not that most of the customers even know what they're eating by then anyway. Whenever I'm over in Eastbourne my mate Julie insists on a visit to the Clay Oven at the end of any kind of night. Even if we've been out for dinner.

It's not just the chips you see...the Clay Oven is just plain entertaining. The staff are up for a laugh and keep you amused whilst they're preparing your food. Then there's the punters...a lively bunch who usually all know each other. Or want to fight each other. Pure class!

Review of Sussex Downs College

25 Apr 08, 08:55

Learn something new... 5*

..every day!

This is the biggest Further Education College in Sussex and probably one of the biggest in the country. There are campuses (campi?!) at Eastbourne, Lewes and Newhaven.

Sussex Downs offers a vast range of courses to suit every academic level...every individual need...every career path...the lot really. I studied there as an adult taking a course in British Sign Language and really could not fault my experience there in any way. The courses are well organised and the tutors excellent. There's great support on hand too should you need any financial help to fund your course or if you have learning needs. It's all there under one roof.

Of course there are full-time courses aplenty too from A-Levels to plumbing...catering to hair & beauty. They really cover all bases. If you know you want to study but just can't decide which course is best for you...then pop into Student Services and book in for some advice and guidance. It could be the best thing you ever do.

Review of Pomodoro E Mozzarella

21 Apr 08, 12:38

Decent Italian grub 4*

I really like Pomodoro...I'm not from Eastbourne but have eaten there a fair few times with mates who live in the area. We used to go on work nights out there too when I worked nearby. You do tend to know what you're going to get when you go Italian but the food and staff here are just that bit better.

The staff are very welcoming and genuinely bothered about how your evening is going in their restaurant. They don't fuss around you but make sure you have absolutely everything you need as soon as you need it. You'll certainly leave there pleasantly full up and all for a good price too. It's in the perfect location for heading off into town...well worth a visit.

Review of Mr Hau's Oriental Express

19 Apr 08, 17:21

Quick and satisfying 4*

My mate Julie has banged on about Mr Hau's for years so the last time I visited her in Eastbourne, we went there for our tea.

This is the takeway/cafe version of Mr Hau's...the restaurant is a couple of doors up. The 'Express' is brightly lit and bustling with people. The tables are plastic with fixed seats...so pretty basic. The food, however, is amazing. I ordered bean curd with Chinese mushrooms and noodles and it was some of the best I've ever tasted. It was still sizzling when it arrived at the table...straight out of the wok...really fresh. The portions are huge too although being the greedy girl I am I managed to polish it all off without too much trouble.

The staff are rushed off their feet but smiley and polite and happy to have your custom whatever you order.

If you're looking for a quick but very tasty meal then Mr Hau is for you. No doubt the restaurant is just as good.

Review of The Rodmill

19 Apr 08, 17:12

Good lunchtime pub 3*

I used to work at the college across the road from The Rodmill so it was great to pop to for lunch when there was a birthday in the office...or for any other reason for that matter.

It's a big pub with plenty of seating and lots of different sections so you don't feel like you're rattling about in there. It had a full re-fit in the past couple of years so it's comfortable and clean. The pub grub is decent and pretty cheap too...just all round good value.
