Review of Gallery Of Modern Art

30 Apr 08, 08:52

Cone-head 4*

The GoMA is located in central Glasgow and showcases temporary, modern exhibitions and workshops. Opened in the mid-nineties the GoMA is based inside a beautiful building (neo-classical I think they call it) which very much reminds me of the building in Back to the Future!

Outside the gallery you'll find a statue of the Duke of Wellington...now famous for sporting a traffic cone on his head...how very odd...and yes there are t-shirts available.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to GoMA and if you're visiting the city I strongly recommend you take it in whilst you're there.

Review of Mimmo's Bistro

25 Apr 08, 22:20

Shopping fuel 3*

Mimmo's is located bang smack in the middle of Ashton Lane...climb the steps up towards the incredible smells drifting out of the door.

The food is really very good...it has an authentic Italian feel as opposed to the endless 'fast food' Italian chains you'll find in town. We ate here at lunchtime desperately in need of a major feed and we weren't disappointed. Everyone needs a good portion at some point during the day let's face it.

On the downside the staff were a little surly...our waiter looked positively put out when we first walked in. It also lacks atmosphere...we almost felt like we had to keep our voices down it was so quiet in there despite there being plenty of other diners. Maybe it's different in the evening. We'll give them the benefit of the doubt because of the fanastic food. See...I'm nice I am.

Review of Jinty Mcguinty's

25 Apr 08, 21:56

Up for the craic 3*

Jinty Mcguinty's covers the Irish Bar genre in the West End nicely. It's a tall, skinny place and the walls are adorned with the requisite Irish memorabilia. It makes up for in atmosphere what is lacks in sophistication...although be prepared to wait for your drink. Service is slooooooooow.

The beer garden was packed on my only visit here...clearly a favourite with locals and tourists alike. You can watch the loony world of Ashton Lane wander by from your table and if you're as lucky as we were there'll be an astonishingly good busker perfoming just outside to keep you entertained. I like Jinty's...good for a quick stop off at anytime of the day.

Review of The Horseshoe Bar

25 Apr 08, 18:48

Proper Glasgow... 4*

...in pub form.

Ok so I'm English and you probably think I haven't a clue what I'm on about but I was with a local...and he told me it was...so there.

This is the official home of Travis...Fran and the boys rehearsed there for years before they hit the big-time and there's a special gold plaque for them on the wall don't you know. It was a Saturday afternoon when I went to the Horseshoe bar so it was packed out with blokes getting on it watching the football results come in on the telly as well as those knackered from shopping.

Infectious atmosphere and plenty of character...what more do you need?

Review of La Tasca

25 Apr 08, 18:35

Ole! 4*

I've always had a bee in my bonnet about Tapas and Spanish food in general...no good for veggies. Or so I thought until I visited La Tasca in Glasgow. There was loads of choice for me on the menu and it's amazing how those little dishes fill you up so...well I did have about 17 of them I suppose.

I was mightily impressed with this restaurant...the loud Spanish decor...the charismatic staff and the damn tasty food. It was very reasonable too. All in all a rather lovely experience. Go there!

Review of Ubiquitous Chip

25 Apr 08, 18:12

The name alone... 4*

...makes this place worth a visit.

I was taken to The Chip by a local who really knows his Glaswegian venues. We didn't have the funds that day to eat in the award-winning restaurant but we spent a good couple of hours soaking up the rare Scottish sun on the roof terrace with a couple of large cold ones. A beautiful building with many nooks and crannies...it's located on a corner of the uber cool Ashton Lane. Felt like I was really on holiday.

I'm hoping to eat there next time as the menu boasts only the best Scottish ingredients and has an incredible reputation for good food.

Review of Transport Museum

25 Apr 08, 09:39

Geeky...but somehow cool 3*

To say I was a little underwhelmed to discover my new boyfriend was taking to me to the Transport Museum for a date is an understatement to say the least.

But...I secretly really enjoyed myself if I'm honest. They had every mode of transport covered dating back as far as you can go with this kind of thing. I had that excitable feeling in the pit of my stomach by the time we left...you know the one you get when you're on a school trip. If it's chucking down outside and you want something different to do...it really can't hurt to spend an hour or so wandering the Transport Museum. You might want to keep it to yourself though...!

Review of Ashoka Ashton Lane

25 Apr 08, 09:31

Outstanding 5*

Now this is a very big statement to make...but the curry I had when I visited the Ashoka on Ashton Lane, Glasgow was the best goddamn curry I've ever had. EVER.

It's hard to put into words just how good it was...and let's face it we've all eaten many a curry in our lives. It was my first visit to the city...and to Ashton Lane which is uber cool in itself...Ashoka fits nicely in with the relaxed atmosphere of the West End. The service is impeccable..in fact we'd pretty much become life-long friends with our waiter by the time we left the place.

When our food arrived you could literally taste the love with which it had been prepared. The freshest of ingredients and flavours in every mouthful. Just sublime.
