Review of Caffe Fresco

30 Apr 08, 09:44

Big baps... 4*

...and baguettes...and sandwiches...and jacket spuds and the like.

This is a lovely cafe on Boundary Road in Portslade...I work nearby and it's the perfect spot for a mid-morning snack...or lunch...or an afternoon snack for that matter. The food is well prepared and very fresh. If you happen to be hungry and in the glamorous town of Portslade you can't go far wrong here.

Review of Penguin Cafe

Brekkie on the Solent 4*

Well as near as damn it anyway.

The Penguin is a mighty fine greasy spoon...and it's really not greasy either. It's the perfect place for your Sunday fry-up even when the weather's bad. Get huddled up in there...wrap your hands round your large mug of tea and just wait for your plate of delights to land on the table.

The staff are good fun and keep their cool even when it's packed in there...and it does get busy. Service is swift so your hungover, rumbling tummy doesn't have long to wait. No need to feel bad for pigging out either...you can always walk it off along the seafront. Or go home and kip on the sofa as I tend to do!

Review of Market Diner

26 Apr 08, 09:35

Your weekly calorie intake... 4*

...on one plate.

My mate cat has always maintained that you know when you've had a good night because you wake up with egg on your top. It means you've finished your night out in style...at the Market Diner.

Ok so there are bouncers on the door and some of the food is already plated up and being kept warm under heat lamps...sweating in the glass cabinet...but it's about the whole experience. Not the best place for a vegetarian I have to be honest but a stack of chips and beans at 3am suits me just fine.

What you really go there for though is the antics of the weirdos in there. Pure quality entertainment...

Review of Carats Cafe Bar

23 Apr 08, 09:04

Hearty brekkie... 4*

...and the like.

Carats is a bit of a favourite of ours for an after work fry-up. We work dead early you see so come 10am we are ravenous. It's too far to walk to from our place but if we can sort out who's driving it's well worth the effort.

It looks a bit like a public toliet block from the outside but don't be fooled...the food is top notch. I've only ever had breakfast there but Carats is open all day for lunch and is fully licenced too. They cater well for freaky veggies like me...plenty of non-meaty choices and you really get a great big plateful. It's cheap too...and the staff are all very happy sorts. My tummy's rumbling at the mere thought...

Review of The Mad Hatter

22 Apr 08, 07:55

Wholesome & filling 4*

The Mad Hatter is the cafe on the corner opposite Waitrose on Western Road. You can't miss it. Don't quote me on this but I think they do mostly veggie food which suits me just fine. Their falafel is to die for...and absolutely HUGE. You get a good feed but don't feel like you've eaten a big plate of stodge. It's all good quality healthy stuff.

The cafe itself is funky with plenty of pavement tables for when the sun's out. It is right on the main road but that just means you get a great vantage point to watch the crazy world of Brighton amble by. Eating here won't break the bank either...excellent value for money.

Review of Southern Grill

18 Apr 08, 18:18

Best toast in Sussex! 4*

I work in the Portslade area and wherever you work you need a good greasy spoon to keep you going. The Southern Grill is just that plus a little bit more.

Me and the girls from work visit at least once a week for a large brew and a pile of white, buttered toast. For some reason toast always tastes better when someone else makes it but somehow the Southern Grill team have got this down to a fine art. Just the right level of crispiness and melting butter without being in the slightest bit soggy. Where did they learn that?! At Toast School no doubt.

When we're up for a proper treat then we go the whole hog and plump for the fry-up. They'll do pretty much any combination you desire and it doesn't arrive swimming in grease. It's dead cheap too and you always get a big smile from the staff when you walk in the door.

Now I'm hungry...

Review of Nia Cafe Bar

Not your run-of-the-mill caff... 4*

...by any stretch.

This cafe is in a class of its own if you ask me. It seems everything they offer on their menu has a nice wholesome, healthy twist. They do amazing breakfasts with fresh, good quality ingredients and you won't find a puddle of grease on your plate once you've polished it all off. I've had many a veggie breakfast there...chunky granary toast, veggie sausages, succulent grilled tomatoes, tasty mushrooms and a generous slab of halloumi. Yes...halloumi on your brekkie...genius!

Then there are the smoothies...prepared in-house and nothing but fresh fruit. You can feel the vitamins seeping into your blood-stream.

They have a branch on Trafalgar Street in Brighton too but I've not yet visited...no doubt it's equally as good.

Review of Lawns Cafe

14 Apr 08, 09:35

A good brew 3*

This cafe is perfectly situated on Hove Lawns but only has outside seating so no good on a rainy day. That said when the sun's out...or even if it's grey and dry then this is the place to stop and refuel before, after or even during your stroll along the beach.

They do a cracking fry-up (even for veggies) and stock decaff tea which is an unbelievable rarity in these parts for some reason. I'm a delicate sort...can't do caffeine as it sends me funny.

Anyway...they do the lot in terms of cafe food and it's cheap and tasty. Sit back with your brew, protected from the wind and watch the sea...aaahhh...

Review of Bucket & Spade Beach

14 Apr 08, 09:19

The best baguettes on the beach! 4*

You're spolit for choice for cafes on Brighton seafront of course but this really is right up there in terms of great food, top service and good prices. It's in The Arches just behind the kids play area next to West Pier. Ok it can be quite lively with all the little nippers and their parents about...so it's good for families and for those who don't mind kids!

There's lots of choice on the menu...the kind of stuff you'd expect from a seaside cafe but everything is just so fresh and well-presented. They seem to go the extra mile...I recently ordered a brie and salad baguette and on top of the generous garnish were two large flat mushrooms baked with a balsamic dressing. Really gorgeous.

Oh and James the waiter is particularly friendly...don't tell him I said that though...
