Review of Park Inn Hotel

14 Apr 08, 15:22

Nice 3*

A solid, as you'd expect hotel for Bedford. Beautiful views of the River Great Ouse. Also some cracking views of Nandos (if that's your thing.) Affordable room rate and friendly staff. The rooms are very spacious and the evening staff were very nice and made me sandwiches when I stumbled in after closing whilst a little the worse for wear. Well done Park Inn. Also... keep an eye out for the carpet in the lobby, it'll make your head spin. If you've got a hangover, it'll not do you any favours. My suggestion is head out to the banks of the river and get some fresh air.

Review of Nando's

14 Apr 08, 15:32

Chicken from Heaven (well Portugal actually) 5*

Affordable, delicious and recently namechecked in Gavin & Stacey for taking cards if it's over a fiver.

A subtle blend of peri peri spices and chicken is all you need to know. I've yet to find anyone who doesn't like it (I'm sure vegetarians are bound to be a little fussy in a chicken restaurant.)

It's phenomenal, although don't fill up too much on olives and spicey nuts as there's always plenty.

Word of warning... if you're so obsessed with Nando's that you're more than happy to eat in there on your own, they do have a tendency to stick you in a window seat, like some sort of lonely freak. Maybe that's just me.

Review of Sportsman

14 Apr 08, 15:42

Great Food, Awful View 4*

I've always loved the Sportsman as a place to eat out at. It's a minimalist gastro pub that's reflected in it's decor. I think it's the decor, not the fact that it's on a bleak piece of flat land snuggled under a protective sea wall that doesn't do a lot for the ambience.

The food however is great and is consistently of a high standard. Great for sea-food and the like.

Review of Invicta Tandoori

Best Curry in the bubble 5*

I've burnt more cash in here than I care to imagine.

A small family business run by "Chef" who is always friendly and constantly asks me about a man called Tony who I only ever met once. I don't quite know what "Tony Hot" is, but I know that I don't want it.

Great currys and a cracking peshwari naan. Plus the aperitifs always manage to tip me over the edge. Plus they serve Bangla Beer which is the greatest curry beer on the planet.

Review of Crab & Winkle

14 Apr 08, 15:51

Awesome food, just don't get there early 4*

I'll have to admit that I've only ever been once. The food was great, however, I was tucked away in a corner under a slanting roof that gave me a crick in my neck and meant that I couldn't stand up without developing a curvature of the spine like Mr Burns from The Simpsons.

If you go... book early, ask for the terrace on a warm sunny day, watch the boats as you eat and wash it down with plenty of wine and it'll be one of the best eating experiences you'll ever have.

Review of Shapla Tandoori

Don't go as a group 3*

Good food, friendly staff and a clean interior.... but and there's always a but. I've been quite a few times as a group and it hasn't been smooth running.

In a small group, it's always been good. For quality of food, I'd plump for the Invicta Tandor just down the road and on the left, but it's good for a post pub curry

Review of Birdies-Baudemont Foods

Best of a Great Bunch 5*

Tiny, Cramped, ricket, tumbledown and one of the best independent restaurants in the whole country. I've never had a bad meal here and always make a point of eating here, even though I no longer live in the area. The fish is immaculate and sourced locally. it has a french flair to the cooking, but isn't pretentious. Book early on the weekend as it's always busy.

Review of Burger King

It's a Burger King 3*

What do you expect... it's a Burger King. If you don't know what one of these is, then either you've been living under a rock or you're one of those soldiers who has been hiding. Refusing to believe that the second world war is over.

To review it... it's better than Macdonalds as the bugers don't taste like someone's chewed them first.

Review of Chiltern FM

14 Apr 08, 16:12

Bedford's 96.9 5*

Covering Bedfordshire, bits of Hertfordshire and some of Cambridgeshire, plucky Chiltern Radio punches with the big boys to give three counties a good servicing.

Where else can you get a mid-morning show in the area, that not only plays great music, but also has a presenter; who can drop more sarcasm than that character off the Mary Whitehouse Experience. Alex Duffy, very funny.

Review of McDonald's Restaurants

Always There 3*

Er... it's a Macdonalds.

It's that place with the smiling clown who wants to sell you smashed meat products. Oh heck if you don't know about it now, you never will.

Burgers that are cheap and cheerful, but it's open late and always there when your starving after a night on the sauce.
