Review of Cross Cafe Bar
02 Jan 08, 16:57
Late night Moseley Drinking
Other than the Bull's Head the Cross is the only bar/pub in Moseley that gets a late license - surprising when you consider the number of places there are to drink nearby.
Unfortunately the Cross fails to hit the nail on the head for me. Don't get me wrong it has a lot going for it. Dencent food, small but sufficient selection of beers, a a ton of seating towards the back. It may be the clientele that put me off - they very much reflect how trendy Moseley has got in recent years - or indeed the bars choice of music, either way there is something not that right.
If you're looking for somewhere to drink til a little later than normal opening hours try the Cross. You won't be disappointed, you just won't be that overwhelmed either.

Review of Skylon

Nice, but the space deservces better
Anywhere else in London Skylon would easily be getting four if not five stars from me. There is little to complain about when it comes to the food. A well rounded menu and equally strong wine list provide little to complain about. But for me that was just it, it was nothing hugely exciting. Pork belly -check, pumpkin foam or soup -check, seared scallops -you guessed it- check.
Glance over your shoulder however, and you get a vista few cities in the world can compete with.
And therein lies the problem with Skylon, you leave talking about the view and not the food.

Review of La Plancha

It's Tapas not Tapa's
La Plancha is a decent spanish restaurant in the heart of Moseley. While the menu contains all the usual tapas culprits, they're all done pretty well and served by really friendly staff.
Downstairs there is a nice bar area, which if you are a looking to avoid the busy pubs at the weekend is usually a good alternative.

Review of La Petite Auberge

It's Chain with another Name
Ok it's not strictly a chain but it's basically the same restaurant as Le Sacre Coeur which is next door to the Parv.
The menu is nice, it's nothing to shout about but does some of the classics particularly well. The French onion soup for example is delicious. On my most recent visit I had cod in a sun dried tomato sauce. The fish itself was perfectly cooked, however I found the sauce ever so slightly overbearing.
Deserts are a treat as the do a range of Crepes, including one filled with bananas, brandy, almonds and ice cream.
If your going for the first time try a Sunday, they do a great roast for only £6.50!

Review of The Chandos

A Sam Smiths
Pretty much what you would expect from a Sam Smith's pub but with added benefit of being next door to Trafalgar Square.
I tend to go here before visiting the ICA as the bar there can be full of you know whos and is definitely a lot more expensive.

Review of Browns

Average
Strictly speaking there is nothing wrong with Brown's. The food is nice enough and reasonably prices, the decor is neutral, and the atmosphere is pleasant.
But for me that's also it's biggest problem. I can't really describe it but I got the overwhelming sense that I was in a hotel or airport restaurant. It just all felt a little to familiar.
Praise should definitely be given to the staff who on the night I visited were clearly sort a few team members, but nevertheless kept up and we're always friendly.

Review of Ember

Ho Hum
I've never had the food there, so I couldn't couter David's points on the speed of service. All I can say of Ember is, "meh."
It's one of the places that I pass most regularly on the way to the tube from work. It entices you in becasue of the large numbers of people spilling on to the streets. Do not be fooled, it just not that good. Average beer, average cocktails and a borning clientele.
All in all average.

Review of Apple Store
02 Jul 07, 16:16
It's hard not to have fun here
There is not many companies in the world that can have you wait in line for 30 minutes longer than you are supposed to, charge you £200 to fix a laptop that is still in warranty, and yet still have you spend a £100 on extras. If Apple Inc. was a drug, it too would have been banned in public places.
The store itself is pretty amazing, the largest of it's kind in the world, a simplistically designed interior, and particularly friendly staff.

Review of Fine Burger Co
16 May 07, 20:05
Nice Burgers -Don't Go Deluxe
I chose to go to Fine Burger Co this weekend over the other up market burger offerings. My burger was really nice and the chips were good too. The problem was that I had decided to go 'Deluxe,' exactly the same burger but with two slabs of beef and an extra £3 on your bill.
There was just too much meat and they hadn't increased the amount toppings to compensate. It was just was to much beef.

Review of Noodle Express
10 May 07, 15:51
Express Noodles
Fast service, big portions and refilable green tea, exactly what you want from a noodle house. This place isn't going to win any cooking awards, but that isn't really the point. At lunch time this place is packed, and rightly so, I tend to go after work when I can avoid the crowds. Chicken Ramen for £5 in the middle of Farringdon?! I challenge you to find somewhere cheaper.
