Review of Tate Modern

04 Jun 07, 14:09

Art. Meh 3*

I'm not really "into" art. I can appreciate it if I see if but have no interest in specifically going to a gallery to look at various artistic works. I much prefer "real life" photos or drawings than abstract or minimalist styles.

I have long heard the opinion about modern art being crazy and not "real" art at all but never having seen any, I had nothing to back up that view.

Yesterday, I decided that I would finally go to the Tate Modern and see for myself, and it was just as I had expected really.

I always try and go with an open mind about these things but I wasn't impressed by most of the art on show. There were a few good pieces that provided brief amusement, such as the optical illusion paintings, and some actual decent paintings of things, but I don't really know how to appreciate the majority of the work there - canvases with a single colour, or what seem like random lines everywhere.

The actual museum itself is a bit weird with the entrance taking you in on level 1, then you have to go through corridors, outside, down a ramp, then into a massive room and up some escalators bypassing level 1 directly to level 2. It's very strange, and very unnecessary.

Was it worth it? Yes, but only so I can continue my cynicism about the whole "modern art" thing.

Review of Tinseltown

If you want milkshakes... 3*

...then this is a good place to go. You can get a wide variety of different shakes and they are very nice. But don't get food. I've been twice, the first time the food was alright, but not great - just a basic burger. The second time I was with some other friends and we just had milkshakes - that worked out fine and we all enjoyed them. Maybe a little pricey, but the novelty value doesn't wear off before you leave.

So yes, fine for milkshakes, not so good for anything else.

Review of PizzaExpress

Fancy pizza 3*

Pizza Express is much like Pizza Hut, except it's fancier and more expensive. You can usually see them making your pizza and this outlet is no different. That is a nice touch and they tend to bring the food very quickly. I went in after work with a few colleagues about 6.30pm or so, and it wasn't busy. The pizzas are always nice and it's a good place to get a good pizza...if you don't mind paying that bit extra.

Review of Waitrose

Sneaky Organic 3*

Waitrose is one of the higher class, if not the highest class kind of supermarket - it's way above the likes of Tesco and doesn't come close to Spar or Iceland.

That said, their prices are actually not that much more expensive and in actual fact, some are cheaper than other places. The ice cream I usually buy (Hagen-Daaz Strawberry Cheesecake) is cheaper at Waitrose than the local independant store near my flat.

The Bloomsbury store is within the Brunswick Centre, which is a great concrete monstrosity, but that is another story.

The store itself tends to get busy around 5-7pm each day so avoid those times. Otherwise, it's usually quick to check out. They have multiple checkouts and although the small item checkouts by both doors appear faster, it is more often than not faster to go to the normal checkouts.

Also be on the watch out for organic products. Waitrose sneak them in everywhere and the labels tend to be very similar to the cheaper non-organic varients...so watch out.

Review of Post Office

Extremes 3*

One morning I went into this Post Office and it was totally packed, so I went back another time and it was empty! Pick your moment. Otherwise, it's just a standard Post Office for all your postal needs.

Review of Subway

All the same really 3*

All the Subway's are the same - the only thing you can differentiate them on is the level of service. I called in at this one after visiting Sound Control just round the corner. It is strategically positioned inside an EasyInternet internet cafe, so you could surf the net whilst you eat your sandwich if you wanted.

Unfortunately, I got stuck behind an italian cowboy who was translating to what I assume was his grandson...but doing a very poor job, probably because of the cowboy hat he was wearing. He eventually managed to get the girl to understand what sandwich he wanted and I was served.

Luck of the draw. Damn cowboys.

Review of Mean Fiddler

Good venue 3*

This is a good venue and I have seen several bands play here. Queuing is a bit strange because you go down a dark alley-way which often smells, but once you're inside it's fine. You enter on the top floor and it can be a little disorientating to try and find your way down, but you can get very close to the front.

Getting out is a little difficult because the exit is very small and it may take some time to push through the crowds. That is if you finish up at the very front...which turns into the back when you leave.
