Review of Carluccios

Simple Italian 4*

This place has a lovely cafe/bistro feel to it and the basic menu isn't rammed to the hilt full of pizza and pasta dishes! The service is definetley tip worthy...

Carluccio's simply celebrates classic, traditional Italian cuisine, a splash of olive oil here, a simple tomato sauce there... Quality!

Good Pizza / Confused Service 3*

A nice Italian restaurant despite the scatty service.

When we arrived post cinema, the individual who greeted us didn't seem particularly pleased to see us and there seemed to be some confusion over who was serving us. Overall, the staff just seemed bored and robotic...

Despite this, the food was excellent (the meatball pizza was fab), but the coffee let them down slightly. My double expresso was too hot (obviously machine generated) and there were no mints!

A few misgivings, but worth a second visit if I'm in the neighbourhood.

Review of Gizel Kebab Bar

Filthy Healthy! 4*

South London's finest kebab shop! Have fond and equally sketchy memories of this place from my time in Clapham. Many an evening would end with a trip to Gizel's and one of their perfectly formed doner kebabs... Friendly service was always delivered and the food doesn't appear unhealthy, although I'm sure you could fill a wine glass with it's juices... and drink them.

Review of Ben Crouchs Tavern

Certificate 12a 2*

I went here a few years ago and it had great novelty value all decked out like Dr Frankenstein's lab and the trip the toilet would be accompanied with the rattling of chainsaws, terrifying death screams and creaking doors!

Went there recently and I'm afraid it'd lost it's charm and the toilet 'sound effects' had been replaced by the standard toilet attendant expecting a tip for passing you the soap!

Basically in movie rating terms, two years ago would have atttacted a solid '18', although it has since been savagely edited for TV and is now a family friendly '12a'

Review of The Endurance

16 May 08, 09:44

Great Jukebox! 4*

Off the beatern track in the depths of Soho The Endurance is a decent sized bar that serves a plentiful array of beers (etc). Has a kinda student union, indie feel to it; you could imagine going through to a scuzzy smoke filled backroom and watching a struggling band belting out a few demo's... The Endurance is also one of the few decent pubs in London that has a good, up to date jukebox!

Review of Angels

Pricey But Nicey... 4*

A top quality fancy dress emporium with an amazing array of outfits; but unfortunately top prices come with top quality! To hire a costume you're looking at £70 (plus) with some deluxe outfits going for around £800!! You can buy cheaper outfits but the quality isn't great and is of the standard cheap fabric variety...

Angels also provide outfits to TV and film so the quality is awesome. You could literally hire a cowboy costume, go back in time (with the right technology of course) and not look out of place!

Review of Maharaja Of India

Solid Curry House 3*

This is a great Indian restaurant to visit after a few beers on an evening when the mood takes you; the curry's are nice and the naan bread is pretty special...

Nothing wrong with the food, nothing wrong with the service, decent draught beer and tucked away nicely so it's not particulary busy (so you get served in good time).

Just a solid curry house that does what it says on the tin! Nice...

Review of Greedy Guts

Wholesome... 4*

Only been here the once, but the service comes with a smile and the range of choice is fab; loads of decent meats, pickles, cheeses, cheeky mustards and wholemeal/granary bread type products. Definitely my new lunchtime trip when I'm in Bristol, although it's not very well signposted so keep your peepers peeled! Good work!

Review of Fopp

14 May 08, 13:42

Foppin' Brilliant! 4*

My new favourite record store. Having got tired of the massive HMV's of the world I went to check out Fopp for my record buying needs today and was pleasantly surprised...

Lots of cheap records and films (and not the usual crap compilations and tv movies most stores are normally desperate to get rid of) and not overly busy; I could've spent hours casually browsing the shelves and exhausting my bank account!

Also, the staff are quite friendly and don't treat you like your waiting at a supermarket deli!

I'm now officially converted!

Review of The Selkirk

14 May 08, 11:40

A Jewel in the Tooting Crown 4*

The Selkirk is a must for good food; the Sunday roast it legendary and comes with a host of trimmings, although the sardines are genius (and a recent addition to the menu) and arrive all chargrilled and crispy, like you've just caught them by the river and rustled them up yourself!

It has a decent beer garden and an impressive range of lagers including the entire Artois family
