Review of Waxy OConnors

Drinks don't match the decor
The decor in Waxy O'Connors is amazing. The pub seems to extend onwards and downwards forever. You half expect a bunch of Hobbits to trundle through.
Sadly the food and drink don't quite match the expectations set by the surroundings. The usual array of lagers and alchopops and a depressingly generic "Pub Grub" menu.
A pub like this deserves drinks as unique as its character. Maybe I went on an off day, but there's nothing on the menu to distinguish it from any of the other pubs in the vicinity.
It's worth going to just for the spectacle - it's even better to invite friends to meet you "in the back" and spend the evening looking for each other. But just stay for one drink and then try and find your way out.

Review of Wahaca

Trendy - but in a good way
A few months ago I went to Wahaca on its opening night. My heart sank. This place looked Trendy (with a capital T). Usually this means expensive and inedible food served by surly and inattentive staff.
How wrong I was.
An excellent selection of delicious "authentic street food", plenty for vegetarians, the staff were friendly and knew what food and drink to recommend.
The dishes burst with flavour, spices were subtle but were easily boosted by the range of condiments provided.
But the pièce de résistance is their Tequila Menu. Forget dodgy shots with a line of salt and a squeeze of lemon - this is proper sipping tequila. The flavours and character of each is unique and makes for a perfect digestif.
A quick meal for 2 with drinks was around £30. Very reasonable for the quality of the food.
Don't bother getting an "Old El Paso" kit from a supermarket - let these guys show you how it's done.
