Review of Treasure Park

28 May 08, 12:03

Not as exciting as the brochure 2*

We visited Treasure Park whilst on holiday in Cornwall.

The brochure we picked up for the park made it look like such an exciting place to visit with attractions such as a mine and real time machine.

It was easy enough to find from the A30, just head into Redruth and follow the brown signs.

On arrival we found that it wasn't as much to see as we had originally anticipated. There was a mine and a small children's play area but the main attraction seemed to be the big jewellery shop on the site.

In the jewellery shop there we a couple of interesting attractions. As you entered the shop on the left hand side was a Delorean car as featured in the Back To The Future films. Now as a big fan of Back To The Future I was really excited by this. Unfortunately it didn't appear that you could sit inside it as advertised on the brochure although you could get fairly close to take pictures. I personally don't think it was one of the few Deloreans used in the actual films but rather a pretty good replica.

Other sights in the shop included an Aston Martin DB5 with all the gadgets as used in some of the Bond films, some original outfits as worn by famous stars of film and music, and also £1,000,000 in £5 notes.

I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area and stuck for something to do. You might even want to try your hand at finding the £1,000 diamond they have in a tank (it's not as easy as it sounds). I'd suggest though unless you're really into jewellery, don't get your hopes up.

Review of Blockbuster

Good selection of films, poor selection of games 2*

The Blockbuster store in Torquay has a rather good selection of the latest films and lots of the classics at decent prices with 7 day rental offers.

They usually do have copies of the latest releases, especially on Friday and Saturday nights and they do stick to their word - if they don't have a top film in you can get it free next time you visit.

However what I feel lets them down is their poor selection of games to rent. Granted they do have a selection of Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 games, but they don't currently have any Wii or Nintendo DS games to rent (however some of their other stores do stock Wii & DS games).

Bit of a shame really, if they did stock Wii and DS games I'd be more likely to rent more from them and not use the likes of online DVD rental such as Lovefilm.

Review of Simius Italian Restaurant

10 Apr 08, 19:47

Fairly good food, poor service 2*

I've been to Simius a couple of times and although I've always enjoyed the food the service has been a bit lacking.

The Italian food tastes great... when it arrives!

There does seem to be a long wait for the food to arrive once you have ordered, and once you have finished your meal you have another long wait to order deserts and pay the bill.

If it wasn't for the good food I would avoid it. Hopefully the service will improve, if it does then it will make a nice place to go for an Italian meal.

Review of Grand Pier Teignmouth

10 Apr 08, 18:29

Not as good as it's glory days 2*

When I was younger, The Grand Pier in Teignmouth was the place to hang out with your friends in school holidays and at weekend.

In the 80's and early 90's they had a very good range of arcade games from some of the earlier classics such as Space Invaders up to the latest machines such as Street Fighter 2. They also had a reasonable selection of other activities such as novelty rides, machines that pushed coins over moving platforms (I never could hit the jackpot and push the big stack off the end of the platform) and Fruit Machines for those who liked that sort of thing.

However nowadays when I go back with my young kids it just isn't the same. The majority of machines are now big money Fruit Machines with little else to do. There is a 'fun' area at the end of the Pier where kids can go on the rides (they even have a kiddie's rollercoaster right at the end of the Pier) but it's not a patch on what it used to be.

If you have young children you'd probably find something on there for them to enjoy but if you're the type who loved the arcades of the 80's and 90's you'd probably be sorely disappointed which is a real shame.
