Review of Academy Video and Dvd

Local DVD store for local people 3*

This is a small but satisfactory DVD store. Its location is what makes it convienant for me.

It isnt a huge chain, which holds 9 copies of every new release. But you can usually get what you want to watch, crisps, popcorn, ice cream etc. Ex-rentals can also be bought.

Returns are by 8pm but if you bring it to the counter they are quite generous at letting you off a late fee or two.

Nice local feel too, if you forget your membership card it doesn't prove problematic.

Review of The Windmill On The Common

Best pub on Clapham Common 4*

Really good summer pub. (Mind you I've never been there in deepest darkest winter).

It is a short stroll from Clapham Common or Clapham South tube stations, situated on the edge of the common. There are limited parking spaces but a few none-the-less.

This is a lovely place to get a drink and enjoy the outside green spaces of the common (plastic cups are provided). Lots of outdoor seating if you prefer and the refurbishment (done a while ago now but holding up well), was needed and changed the place for the better. The pub does well from the many festivals and sporting activities held on the common, not to forget the fireworks display. Great place for Sunday lunch, reading the papers, or an after work pint / glass of wine.

The food is your usual pub fair, burgers, lasagne, fish ‘n chips etc. All good, no complaints here. There is plenty of indoor seating and a restaurant (not yet tried it out). Not many people realise that The Windmill is also a hotel. My friends mum always stays here and highly recommends it. Handy too if you find yourself unable to get home (or you unexpectedly get luck!)

Pub quizzes on Sunday nights, and I understand a bit of dancing goes on, on Friday & Saturday nights.

Worth checking out.

Review of The Clapham Picture House

Everyone should have a cinema like this. 4*

This is a great little cinema. 4 screens and a great connecting cafe/bar. They run a membership scheme with perks, great if you're local and a regular cinema goer.

They have an eclectic programming mix of arthouse and quality mainstream films. They host evenings, have private hire, art exhibitions, kids club, "big scream" - where parents can bring young kids and they wont be made to feel bad if the children cry - good idea !

Close to lots of restaurants and bars. Great local cinema. The staff are really cool. Its got all the facilities of a larger cinema change, but its got soul.

the key is the timing 4*

The reviews before me are spot on. Good food, no booking and often a busy place so expect queues. The key is in the timing.

The good things about this place. The staff are great at getting you drinks to enjoy whilst you are in the queue waiting for a table. The food is good and reasonably priced. And with the bench seating you'll be able to get close to strangers, not always a bad thing.

The downsides can be the waiting (especially if its not great weather), and sometimes you feel the pressure to eat quickly and rush. The bench seating, is no good for intimate dates.

The food is good, so get the timing right and you're sorted.

not worth the visit 2*

Enticed by the boards outside, we went for lunch. It just wasnt very impressive at all. The food was nothing worth raving and the bill for two people for two course with wine was just not worth a repeat vist. The the food was good I would not have minding the cost.

Give it miss.

Please don't tell anyone.. good little secret 4*

I like this place, not often packed. Good for watching the rugby. Bar snacks are yummy, although bar food portions can be small and disappointing.

I've not checked out the restaurant nor been there for the live music on Sundays. - But am told it’s worth a look in.

Staff are a giggle and service I've always found to be good.

Nice place to take your parents/in-laws for lunch, after work drink, or chill and watch the sport.

Feel like it hasn't been taken over yet. There is a slightly older crowd, and at one point this place was branded a divorcees pick up joint. Perhaps it still is.

Review of Krishna Palace

Maybe my new palace 4*

Great food, great prices, great atmosphere.

We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was brillant, we sat on the terrace to enjoy probably one of the last summer evenings before it turns cold. Although the terrace looks out onto the road, the lighting and planting hid the traffic.

Cannot speak highly enough of the variety of dishes, we did go over board and order lots of different things, but its the only way to get stuck in and try. Sag paneer was a hit as was the green chilli bread. Lovely place for a date.

Will definately be going back.

Review of The Eagle Ale House

Proper pub ! 4*

I love this pub. Its like an old mans pub, with dogs wandering round, board games, TV, sofas and a fire. Mixed crowd of young & old locals.

Large outdoor beer garden with tv screen, rugby seems to be a priority. The marquee has plenty of those outdoor heating jobbies, so its nice enough to sit out there in the colder months.

Its just off the Northcote Road, so a 10-15min walk from Clapham Junction. Between wandsworth & clapham commons.
