Review of The Waterway

Awful experience 1*

The selling point for this place seems to be what they term ‘the terrace’ (glorified way of saying outdoor space contained with some pot plants). I guess people like it particularly in the summer because of this and the pub itself looks over a canal – the view is far from great as the area is heavily residential and canals are hardly renowned for their beauty…Inside the pub there are plenty of seating areas and it all seems nice enough. We were sat outside and ate from the barbeque menu, the food was adequate.

What really defined our visit though was the appalling service, although there were many of them, staff were surly and slow – we were constantly reminded that we had our table for two hours but it took them half an hour just to get our drinks order to us (and wrong as well) and then there was a repeat of this for our food order too, which was disappointing.

In summary, there are plenty of better places in the area to drink and get some good food (without the attitude)!

Review of Flight Centre

Holiday yay 4*

I came in here to do some holiday planning the old fashioned way. The staff here are super friendly, knowledgable and patient – despite being me generally clueless, the guy I spoke to managed to help me find some good flights (they will match internet prices too) – and this was after he had walked me through the world map in the corner of the room giving me advice and talking about ideas of places to visit whilst I was sat on the stairs! They are also really good with any after sales queries.

Review of Sapori

Good all rounder 3*

It seems to be increasingly difficult to avoid chain restaurants these days. Accessible to the crowds but somewhat tucked away on Drury Lane, Sapori offers a good alternative to the usual trusty Italian ones which we all know and love. People who get narky about cover charge should be forewarned… However, the staff are really great and the menu covers all bases. Pizzas and pasta are equally good, prices are standard London.

Review of Crystal Club

You might like it 3*

West end venues - how true it is when they say you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. This place was known as ‘Hombres’ in its former life (when I was at uni), which was basically a popular student sleaze pit meat market. Obviously before re-opening, it’s had a fabulous makeover complete with illuminated glass bits on the ceiling (presumably a tribute to the name), and a bizarre layout (the DJ booth takes up so much space - there’s no dance floor as such so people are mostly dancing on ledges). The bar is near impossible to get to. The crowd are mostly wannabes and show offs (hence the dancing on ledges) and the music is an attempt to disguise dirty RnB type tunes.

The thing I loved most were the toilets (if you’re a guy this won’t apply and you won’t appreciate this anyway). These kind of places, it’s either your scene or not so judge for yourself!

Review of Sarastro

Shocking 1*

This restaurant seems to have a little identity confusion… Firstly the interior (it seems to think it’s a theatre), complete with gold drapes everywhere, ‘boxes’ on the upper mezzanine level and those red velvet chairs. All that going on really isn’t enough to distract you from the poor quality food, which is Turkish (apparently) and just about edible – mezze for starters, unmemorable mains. We came here for a birthday (yes, says a lot about the host!) and we had to have the set menu as it was opera night, where they have singers attempting to squeeze past the tightly packed tables whilst performing. So far so hmmmm… The toilets always seem to be a talking point (interesting choice of wallpaper).

All in all, one to avoid.

Review of Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Burger heaven 5*

I honestly think that all burger restaurants aspire to be like GBK and why wouldn’t they? The menu has everything that you would possibly want to put in a burger (within reason), lots of distinctive combinations (beetroot, egg and pineapple anyone?) but at the same time still caters for those who like an original no fuss burger and of course those who wish to opt out of the beef thing altogether.

This branch is not particularly big so probably not good for groups, but it’s the little details that make me enjoy this chain of burger restaurants more, those plastic tomato ketchup holders (which everywhere has nowadays), the way they hold the burger together with a cocktail stick and the delicious milkshakes help too!

Review of Big Easy

Big Ch-easy 3*

This place is quite fun – decked out with those red and white checked tablecloths, you know they are not taking the authentic American restaurant tag lightly… Atmosphere is always buzzy (loud but not in a bad way) in the evenings with the live music. As long as you’re not taking the whole thing too seriously, you will enjoy this place!

They do some good deals with the food that includes drink too, especially the lobster deal in the summer and the all you can eat barbeque one (not been brave enough to face that challenge yet) – portions are generous, service is friendly and they even provide you with disposable bibs, what more could you want?

super everything 5*

A little out of the way for me, but was worth it. I’m not sure what the cuisine is classed as – modern European I guess but the food here was amazing, fairly priced also. The menu is well balanced - there seemed to be more pork options in comparison to similar restaurants (it must be some kind of in joke or something I’m missing as the restaurant sign also has a semi-comical picture of a pig). Choosing a main is difficult – not just because I’m rubbish at making decisions, but because everything on the menu looks fantastic, there was some serious food envy going on as a result of spying on other tables!

The dining room itself is simple, if a little boring (white walls, wooden tables, you’ve seen it all before) and our waiter was really polite and friendly. Desserts don’t let the side down either… I would quite happily come back here again and again.

brilliant belts 4*

Received my first belt from here as a gift and have been back since – the basic concept of this shop is that you buy the belt as two separate components (leather strap, buckle) and these are interchangeable with any other buckles/straps from there... pick and mix unisex belts as it were.

Don’t be put off by the display items, most of these are a little more extravagant than the average person would wear – the range available is varied enough to cover all tastes. I’ve only ever seen one person behind the counter (who I presume is the owner) but staff are super helpful and will help you find whatever you want, whether you are being specific or totally vague.

Prices are mid to high end but they are worth it as they are effectively bespoke and of good quality.

Genius way to make it look like you have a never ending supply of accessories!

Review of Como Lario

nice little Italian 3*

Been here several times with a friend who absolutely adores it here, it's a nice little Italian - the dining room is cream, inoffensive and there is always something on the menu that you will fancy.

Staff here are really friendly - genuinely enthusiastic about the food and ingredients. The food in general is really good - mozzarella here is amazing, a nice little touch is that if you order the truffle pasta, they take the whole box of truffle and shave it onto your food in front of you. Prices are standard London.
