Review of Sapori

28 May 08, 08:54

Good all rounder 3*

It seems to be increasingly difficult to avoid chain restaurants these days. Accessible to the crowds but somewhat tucked away on Drury Lane, Sapori offers a good alternative to the usual trusty Italian ones which we all know and love. People who get narky about cover charge should be forewarned… However, the staff are really great and the menu covers all bases. Pizzas and pasta are equally good, prices are standard London.

Review of Crystal Club

You might like it 3*

West end venues - how true it is when they say you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. This place was known as ‘Hombres’ in its former life (when I was at uni), which was basically a popular student sleaze pit meat market. Obviously before re-opening, it’s had a fabulous makeover complete with illuminated glass bits on the ceiling (presumably a tribute to the name), and a bizarre layout (the DJ booth takes up so much space - there’s no dance floor as such so people are mostly dancing on ledges). The bar is near impossible to get to. The crowd are mostly wannabes and show offs (hence the dancing on ledges) and the music is an attempt to disguise dirty RnB type tunes.

The thing I loved most were the toilets (if you’re a guy this won’t apply and you won’t appreciate this anyway). These kind of places, it’s either your scene or not so judge for yourself!

Review of Big Easy

Big Ch-easy 3*

This place is quite fun – decked out with those red and white checked tablecloths, you know they are not taking the authentic American restaurant tag lightly… Atmosphere is always buzzy (loud but not in a bad way) in the evenings with the live music. As long as you’re not taking the whole thing too seriously, you will enjoy this place!

They do some good deals with the food that includes drink too, especially the lobster deal in the summer and the all you can eat barbeque one (not been brave enough to face that challenge yet) – portions are generous, service is friendly and they even provide you with disposable bibs, what more could you want?

Review of Como Lario

nice little Italian 3*

Been here several times with a friend who absolutely adores it here, it's a nice little Italian - the dining room is cream, inoffensive and there is always something on the menu that you will fancy.

Staff here are really friendly - genuinely enthusiastic about the food and ingredients. The food in general is really good - mozzarella here is amazing, a nice little touch is that if you order the truffle pasta, they take the whole box of truffle and shave it onto your food in front of you. Prices are standard London.

Review of B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful

superior smellies 3*

A sister company to Lush cosmetics, it’s no surprise that this store has the same love it or hate it smell to it. Both brands base most of the lotions and potions on essential oils (hence the smell) and share the policy of being against animal testing. There are some similar products too in terms of the toiletries and bath stuff, although the goods seem more refined.

There is a big make up collection with a cast range of colours – packaging is eclectic, covered in little beads, stones and jewels like miniature trinket boxes. Generally, it’s a great place to get some girly gifts.

Review of Pizza On The Park

passable pizza 3*

Would only really come to this restaurant out of convenience – last time was because I had just spent the day in Hyde Park and ended up here out of lack of imagination. What did make my visit memorable however, was that we spotted Montoya eating here... Anyway, the food is what you would expect from a standard pizza place, no different to Pizza Express and prices are also similar.

As mentioned in the previous review, what makes the difference is the live jazz music – great if that is your thing but if that is of no interest to you then you would probably be better off elsewhere.

Review of Chandos Sandwich Bar

21 Apr 08, 13:52

Big food 3*

This place follows the standard sandwich bar formula with a choice of breads and large selection of fillings (they are sometimes a bit heavy handed with the mayo for the pre-made fillings though). There are also jacket potatoes, various hot foods, a good selection of salads and also seating if you want to eat in - watch the people having massive fry ups there while you wait for your sandwich! Service is friendly and efficient.

One thing that you can guarantee with this place is that whatever you order, it is massive - jacket potatoes the size of your head, big sandwiches, ciabattas are monster size... Going here is almost setting yourself an eating challenge. Prices are also reasonable, especially for the quantity.

Review of Meson Don Felipe

Average tapas 3*

Located five mins walk away from Waterloo station on The Cut, this tapas restaurant always seems to be packed. Part of this is due to popularity, although I suspect majority of it is to do with the lack of space.

The food is average – the usual tapas offerings: patatas bravas, chorizo, paella etc. Seating is cramped – either around the central bar area or at separate tables on the side of the room. Service is charming enough and the guitar player (precariously balanced on a tiny elevated ledge towards one corner of the room on some nights) adds to the atmosphere.

In summary, it’s alright but nothing special.

Review of British Airways London Eye

Once is enough... 3*

…as the novelty wears off pretty quickly. Once inside a capsule, you can’t really feel the movement of the wheel at all and barely notice as you reach the highest point of the rotation (apart from the view). Each individual capsule is large, holding about 20 people with which you get to share the experience with. It takes around forty minutes to get all the way round and the views are good so long as you are lucky with the weather.

Review of The Phoenix

it's ok 3*

The actual pub itself is nice enough - it's nice to just sit around in, with comfy sofas etc. The crowd seems to be slightly older/reserved - we are more often than not the loudest group in there (take from that what you will)... Bar snacks are also quite good, if not all that varied, the sausage rolls seem to be popular... There is a dining space towards the back of the pub and the menu looks decent.

Review of Tinseltown 24 Hour Diner

10 Apr 08, 13:52

milkshakes a must 3*

If you're in Farringdon and needing a feed at crazy o clock, Tinseltown fits the bill. The food is standard American diner and nothing special. The star attractions (besides being open 24 hours) are the milkshakes, most of which are made of random confectionery that you wouldn't normally eat but are somehow acceptable in milkshake form - yum!
