Review of Chandos Sandwich Bar

21 Apr 08, 13:52

Big food 3*

This place follows the standard sandwich bar formula with a choice of breads and large selection of fillings (they are sometimes a bit heavy handed with the mayo for the pre-made fillings though). There are also jacket potatoes, various hot foods, a good selection of salads and also seating if you want to eat in - watch the people having massive fry ups there while you wait for your sandwich! Service is friendly and efficient.

One thing that you can guarantee with this place is that whatever you order, it is massive - jacket potatoes the size of your head, big sandwiches, ciabattas are monster size... Going here is almost setting yourself an eating challenge. Prices are also reasonable, especially for the quantity.

Review of Druckers Vienna Patisserie

Tasty tea time treats 4*

Originally specialising in patisserie, Drucker’s has expanded its compact menu to be include the more lunch friendly savouries: sandwiches, paninis, wraps, etc.

This is not the only change – the refurb which took place a couple of years ago has turned the once simple, white room with character into a soulless, try hard ‘contemporary’ one with garish splashes of colour.

This however, distracts from what the cafe is about – tea time treats: fruit tarts and vanilla slices filled with delicious creme patisserie and slices of gateaux, varying in price from about £2 - £3. Since moving away from the area, I miss these cakes (still haven’t been weaned off the childhood custom of having some every family birthday) – in particular the ‘Sevilla’ (the orangey one) and the ‘St Honore’, a bizarre but yummy nonetheless combination of a strawberry mousse based cake topped with chocolate profiteroles.

Eat in with the crowd mostly made up of old dears and families, although many tend to favour the take out option. You can also order whole gateaux of varying sizes (frozen or fresh) for occasions which come with chocolate inscriptions made as specified.

All in all, you can rely on the Druckers chain for amazing cakes.

Review of Bens Cookies

14 Apr 08, 13:36

cookie perfection 4*

Cookies from here are so so good – a cookie cake hybrid from heaven… Toppings are always big and chunky (so much better than those tiny little pellets of chocolate chips that you get in biscuits) and the best bit is the cookies are always magically still warm when you get them.

They are sold on a weight basis but they do deals for big quantities. Forget about Millie’s Cookies – they are like overly sweet skinny little crisps compared to these!

Review of Paul

14 Apr 08, 13:35

Weakest link in the chain 2*

I have great love for products of Paul – but this branch just doesn’t live up to the standards set by the Covent Garden or Soho branches. Being limited by space (admittedly not their fault), there is not much variety.

The bigger issue is however, on more than one occasion I have had stale pastries from here. The cramped seating and sometimes surly staff also ruin it. Pauls in general are fabulous - just not this one...

Review of Neds Noodle Box

09 Apr 08, 14:18

top takeaway 4*

Surprisingly not over run with tourists... Good varied menu with changing 'specials' including the usual favourites - best bit is being able to choose which noodles you want (egg, rice or udon). There is a small seating area there and they do some good delivery deals and kid's boxes too - prices are about the same as Wagamama.
