Review of The Ottomans

Gone, But Back Soon 5*

So this place got a makeover and a new name. It seemed like it was trying to be more of an all-day "cafe" rather than a restaurant.

But it closed as of 29th March 2010. A sign in the window claims it will be re-opening in a month "under The Ottomans name" which is good news :)

Review of Tomo Pizzeria

Great Pizza 4*

It's a small, unassuming restaurant on a fairly unassuming street in North London.

The decor isn't anything to write about (so I won't) but don't let that fool you - the food is easily as good as any other italian restaruant in the area.

The pizzas are way better than anything else on offer as a main course, and they're simply lovely. In particular the crust has all the qualities you'd hope for, and the plentiful fresh mozarella I had on my pizz was super-nom.

Starters are good - I've trid the tricolore and deep-fried squid, both delicious.

Review of Gabys Deli

The Lil' Fella - He'll Mend our Watch If You Ask Him 5*

It's true! I went to a nearby jewellers to try and get a new battery for my watch and they directed me to Gaby's Deli. The old geezer has a little workspace downstairs where he mends watches. [incidental story ends] [review begins] The falafel in pitta with chilli sauce & hummus, as previously noted, rocks. All the salads are good too and I've sampled the vegetable fritter in pitta too, which was good, but not a patch on the falafel. They have a handful of tables at the back of the shop so you can sit in, but for most folk it's a takeaway experience. Service is fast and organised and mercifully lacking in small talk. Highly recommended.

This Place Has Closed Down 1*

Really disappointing :(

It was barely open for what seemed like 6 months. I managed only a couple of trips.

I guess it just wasn't the right venue, it certainly didn't fail on the quality of its food.

This Place Closed Down 2*

yep, it's true - in September 2008 :(

The owners blamed the credit crun.ch

It was 'alright' but the decor had long since gone shabby and you got the feeling that the staff had taken their eye off the ball.

Each trip seemed a little less enjoyable than the last - the law of diminshing returns...

Review of Hinds Head Hotel

A Perfect Example of The Traditional Engliish Country Pub 5*

I'd read disappointing reviews of this on another (no longer trusted) site...

.. but that just made the experience of dropping in for an-early pre-wedding-reception dinner even better.

The staff were courtesy and not at all fazed by us dropping in at 6pm on a Saturday and asking for a table for ten.

The selection of ale was plentiful and the food impressive gastro-fare.

Sarah M's review stressed that this places has a lovely atmosphere and I can only concur. It's got the feel of traditional authentic pub with low ceilings and cosy corneres, but it's well-maintained with contemporary touches that are sympathetic to the age and style of the building.

All in all a well-run, well-maintained English country pub. It's obvious that a lot of love goes into running The Hinds Head.

Looks Are Deceiving 4*

It might look like your usual grubby kebab shop but the food's a cut above that.

The staff can be surly and monosyllabic but don't take it personally.

The food's good & tasty & authentically Turkish. The mercimek lentil soup is a particular favourite. So much soup AND bread AND olives all for £3? Bargain.

Review of Jom Makan

Tasty & Good VFM 4*

I haev no idea what might be authentically Malayasian. I suspect the decor isn't but that the food is.

The decor is simple & clean and retains the period features you'd expect of a buildig in this area of London (it's just off Trafalgar Square).

The main dishes and sides are tasty and generally rice or noodle dishes. The vegetarian options appear to be mainly the existing dishes without the meaty ingredients which seems lacking inspiration a litte, but when things are this tasty it doesn't matter.

The desserts are good too (if you like coconut).

Staff were really friendly too. Nice.

Review of Yippee Noodle Bar

Just Good Noodle 4*

One of those unpretentious, down to earth, basic restaurants that just serves good food.

The choices are wide (although maybe not for the non-meat eaters), the service is speedy and unobtrusive and the food is good value for money.

Not the place for a romantic dinner for two but great for a group or as a lunchstop.
