Review of The British Museum

20 Apr 08, 15:32

Now I know why the Acropolis is permanently covered in scaffolding... 5*

This is an amazing museum and when I've been here I always say I'll only be a couple of hours but end up spending the whole day - bargain as entry is free. The quality of dispays and information attached to them is brilliant.

The Ancient Greek and Egyptian displays are truly amazing - however now I know why the Acropolis is permanently covered in scaffolding - because most of it (sadly) is in the British museum and not back in Greece where it should be. I'm sure many countries wish that the amazing ancient artifacts on display here were returned to them, and although it does upset me that these cannot be displayed in their country of origin I am also grateful that they are on display here so that I have the chance to see them.

I know a lot of reviews here have said that there weren't any mummys when they went, but the last time I went they had loads of mummys and sarcophagi - a whole room of them in fact so I was not disappointed.

The gift shop is nice but a bit expensive. They have quite a few educational products rather than just the normal tourist products branded with the museum's name which is nice to see.

Review of The Roman Baths

20 Apr 08, 15:05

When in Rome... 5*

No trip to Bath is complete unless you have visited the Roman Baths. It is really spectacular, and although the water does look green and a bit scummy, the sense of luxury and grandeur that was no doubt felt in the Roman days remains.

I recommend getting there early as every time I have been there it has been really busy and have had to queue for a bit. As the other review here mentions, you are given a headset so that you have a guided tour of the museum and baths. I must admit I didn't really use the headset for everything, only really where I wanted some extra information. Plus I did get a bit bored when the information relayed via the headset was the same as the information displayed on boards in the museum so found some of the audio not really necessary.

After you have finished, it is worth looking at the gift shop even if you don't want to buy anything - I always find gift shops fun. If you want to take a small souvenier back but aren't interested in anything here there is a FAB old fashined sweet shop near here that do lots of lovely souvenier packaged jars of sweets.

Review of Morrisons

20 Apr 08, 11:21

The "special offer" supermarket 4*

Went to Morrisons for the first time yesterday and had a pleasant surprise. Although it was quite small they had everything you need and loads of "special offers" on in almost every aisle. Definitely the place to grab bargains and with the credit crunch and the cost of living getting so much more expensive, Morrisons is definitely the place to go.

The fish counter was amazing - they even had fresh octopus which I wouldn't expect to find in a supermarket - very impressive. I expected more from the bakery counter, a couple of gingerbread men and some fruit pies was not that impressive. The cake aisle had loads of special offers on lots of different branded products.

The cafe wasn't great. We ordered hot food and the menu said you had a choice of side salad or chips with burgers, but we were told that you could only get chips and side salad cost extra but they didn't have any side salads. We had to wait ages for the food and it was ok; ok meaning it was edible but not that tasty.

Overall I don't think I'd use it for a big weekly shop, but it is worth stopping here first and getting stuff you need that is on special offer or fresh fish from the fish counter - I'd still do the main shop at Asda and get cakes from Co-Op.

Review of Outfit

Loads of shops under one roof 5*

I love Outfit, there are all the main clothes shops I like to look at under one roof. Each "brand" has a reasonably big section of it's own so you have substantial stock from each "brand" to browse through. It's so convenient and saves going to a shopping centre where you are in and out of all the shops, you have everything there and can try on clothes from any brands together.

Outfit stocks "brands" such as Wallis, Dorothy Perkins, Principles, Warehouse, Playboy, Miss Selfridge, Top Shop, Evans and more. If you are a student, be sure to take your NUS card with you as you are entitled to a discount.

I'm not one to go for store cards and I don't think they are a good ieda, but if you are going to do a big shop, you get a discount on your first purchase when opening a store card as an incentive. Only get a store card if you are just doign it to get the discount and will pay the amount off in full straight away as the interest rates on the store card are really high. They also have card holder discount days which, again, is good if you are using the store card just for the discount and can pay the amount off in full but not if you are going to pay it off bit by bit because of the high interest charges.

Review of The Sweet Shop

18 Apr 08, 16:33

Proper sweets! 5*

This sweet shop is FAB! Proper "old fashioned" sweets that you used to order by the quart from jars behind the counter - reminds me of being a kid again.

You can buy lots of sweets and biscuits the old fashoned way by the quart, or in decorative little jars or in "souvenier" packaging for presents. All presenter really nicely and really good value for money.

Review of Bath Abbey

18 Apr 08, 16:27

Really beautiful and peaceful 5*

Bath Abbey is really beautiful - a lovely place to wander around and be a tourist, or to take a pew and pray. The glass windows are stunning and it's on a sunny day it it lovely to see the sun shine through them. The Abbey also has a very nice book shop with lots of really good Christian books. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Review of Hilton Hotel - Bath

18 Apr 08, 16:22

Good but expected more from a Hilton 3*

Had a really nice stay here but think I expected more from the hotel because it was a Hilton. The rooms were very small but clean and comfortable. The hotel is ideally located - walking distance from the Roman Baths and main shops.

Breakfast was nice and the view from the restaurant is superb, right over the river, make sure you get a table by the window. I thought the evening meal in the restaurant was a bit expensive generally but standard pricing for a hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Overall it is a nice hotel and perfect location but it is a bit old and could do with a refurbishment. I'd definitely stay here again.

Review of Woolworths

18 Apr 08, 16:14

One of the bigger stores, nice cafe 4*

This is a really nice Woolworths as it is massive and carries a much wider product range than the smaller or average sized stores. Lots of really nice homeware in this branch and even stocks childrens car booster seats too!!

A real plus here is the cafe. After a days shopping in Southport it's nice to stop somewhere and have a cuppa and a cake!!

Review of Southport Rock Shop

18 Apr 08, 15:17

Nice rock souveniers 4*

A nice place to pick up souveniers to take home. Pick up those big red rock dummies to bring out the kid in you! Lots of brightly coloured rock in different flavours - just what you'd expect from a seaside village.

Nice little shop 4*

If you love books then this will be right up your street - load of books on wide variety of subject and some are really, really cheap. Perfect place to pick up a bargain.
