Review of Warwick Arts Centre

28 May 08, 16:35

Something for everyone!! 4*

Based at this campus uni it's at the heart of the little village of shops and bars. It has a gallery, cinema, and a selection of theatres from the tiny studio to the huge auditorium (which also plays host to the students exams and graduation!) The programme is very varied and features everything from mainsteam to very obscure. If you don't fancy EAT head over to the union and go to Xanana.

Review of The Glee Club

28 May 08, 16:24

Great venue! 4*

The Glee Club is famous for it's comedy nights however I've only been here for gigs (and once a burlesque night!) and it has been brilliant every time!

It really makes a change from standing in a sweaty pub / club. When the gig is seated there's less chatting and more attention on the act and as it's quite a small room it's really intimate.

One of the best nights out in Brum!

Review of Waterstone's

28 May 08, 16:20

Really nice shop! 4*

A bullring devote I was for a while tempted away from waterstones to Borders which is right in the middle of the shopping centre and all on 2 floors instead of Waterstones 5 however a recent visit to this older building reminded me how much better it is! It's not as busy, the staff are so friendly and helful and it has a really nice feel, more like a library than a book supermarket.

Review of The Jam House

28 May 08, 15:34

Mature venue 4*

The Jam House has a good reputation, due partly to it's association with Jools Holland. I'd advise booking a table for dinner as this guarantees you entry for the night (which includes a mix of live music and DJ sets) If you don't want to eat get there early!

Review of Lincoln Cathedral

28 May 08, 15:30

Beautiful! 4*

Lincoln is not really a famous city but it really is overlooked. This is such a significant landmark in the region (the scale of the cathedral and the flat lincolnshire landscape means it can me seen for miles around) It's so beautiful and situated right next to the castle you can check out both!

It was given a slight tourism boost recently as it was used as a location for the da vinci code movie.

In winter it looks beautiful, all lit up with a Christmas tree under the arch and on a good day in summer the grass outside is the perfect place to sit with an ice cream from the parlour nearby.

Review of Old Orleans

28 May 08, 14:52

Big portions! 4*

This place is good for friends and family, don't take your girlfriend on a date! The atmosphere is busy and fun and the decore is interesting (it's done out to look like a house inside). Things can get a bit rowdy in the bar area in the evenings due to the broadstreet location. The best kept secret is their lunchtime menu, it's great value, HUGE portions for about £6, it's just a shame more people don't realise as it is a bit too quiet in the day.

Review of Ethos Urban

28 May 08, 14:47

Beautiful Flowers 4*

A really beautiful selection of flowers, located next to a popular sandwich shop the lovely smell wafts into the square inviting you in. The 'gifts' are a bit pointless (jewelled keyrings and pens etc.) but the greetings cards are really nice, much more interesting than a high street card shop but for similar prices.

Review of Bacchus Bar

28 May 08, 14:30

Novelty 4*

The decor of this place is so over the top it's a bit like disney for grown ups. It's underneath the Burlington arcade so there's no natural light and the place is drowning in velvet, woodcarvings, murals etc. I quite like this as it makes a change from the bland chains that dominate Birmingham but if you prefer simple lines and natural light steer clear!

Review of Taylor John's House

28 May 08, 13:52

Very Cool 4*

This is a great little venue, particularly by coventry standards. There are large origional oil paintings in the bar, along with exposed brick, giving the place an arty and intimate feel. The bar is a bit lacking, not much choice. The stage area is is a different room to the bar which I quite like, particularly as there are often quieter bands.

Review of Piccolino

27 May 08, 11:37

A cut above. 4*

Brindley place is a lovely setting, and there are a number of restaurants to choose from, but I think Piccolino will give these established establishments a run for their money.

Enormous potted olive trees outside along with marble topped tables and padded seats are instantly eye catching and inviting and inside is no disappointment, very contemporary and stylish.

The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the food was delicious. I can recommend the calamari, swordfish, new potatoes and the selection of desserts to share!

We had 4 courses and drinks and it worked out at about £35 a head so quite expensive and we had to wait quite a while for the food but overall very good.

Review of Jug Of Ale

06 May 08, 13:08

Going, going... 4*

Quick! Get to the Jug of Ale! It will shortly be no more as it is being knocked down, presumably to make way for yet more flats. The pub itself is fairly average but the venue up the spiral staircase has a lot of history, playing host to a vast range of local talent. It will be sadly missed!

Review of West Midlands Safari & Leisure Park

06 May 08, 12:57

Run down, but lots of fun! 4*

£10.50 a person sounds like a lot, but I think for the range of activities the park has to offer it's good value! We were there for about 5 hours.

The safari trail itself takes about 1hr 30 to 2hrs and I recommend you park up and go to the shop first to get some diet feed for the vegetarian beasts on show. Of the larger animals the tigers and elephants were a highlight.

Inside the park there are leopards, creepy crawlies, free flying bats, fish, reptiles etc. as well as a cafe, fairground rides and a sealion show.

It's important to note that it is quite run down, there is a slightly dirty feel to the place and the food and rides on offer could do with updating. Particularly as the rides are £10 extra and 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks came to £12.

Overall a good day out.

Review of Tap & Spile

06 May 08, 12:50

Open all hours! 4*

Just off broad street this place is leagues ahead of the horrible chain bars that line the main strip. It has a traditional feel with lots of character, it's quite big but split out on 2 levels with a warren of little rooms still feels intimate. The basement level opens out onto the canal near the mailbox. We went there at 1am on a Tuesday night and the party staying in full swing until the small hours.

Review of Quayside

29 Apr 08, 11:46

Indie kids rejoice 4*

Quayside is a scream pub so student friendly, cheap and cheerful. There are huge comfy sofas, pool tables and a video juke box. They serve food in the day which is standard chain pub stuff. Their USP, particularly in a town with little to offer in the way of nightclubs is a large venue upstairs that hosts indie / rock discos.

Review of Po Boys

29 Apr 08, 11:38

Go for lunch 4*

Po Boys is a great independent café. Downstairs they sell a selection of hot drinks, bottled juices, sandwiches and cakes and the seating upstairs is lovely. It’s not normally too busy and there’s normally good music playing. Large windows look out onto the street below and flood the place with light.

Review of Revolution Bar

29 Apr 08, 11:36

Small but perfectly formed 4*

This is quite a small Revolution and is very popular so it’s always really packed, however a lot of people head to Ritzy at about 10.30 – 11pm so if you’re not hitting the clubs it’s a good place to end the night.

Review of Orgasmic Cafe

29 Apr 08, 11:35

Don't let name put you off! 4*

Orgasmic is a café / wine bar, don’t be put off by the name it’s actually quite classy inside. The décor is lots of pine and pale yellow paint. In the evenings is intimate and candle lit and by day they serve proper coffee and nice food. Good for groups of girls or couples.

Review of Tootsies

29 Apr 08, 11:34

Good burgers 4*

Tootsies is an odd one, the menu is the sort of thing you’d expect at TGI Friday’s (burgers, ribs, onion rings etc.) but the décor it far more sophisticated. It’s like TGI Friday’s for grown ups. It’s relatively pricey but the food is really good. The riverside location is nice as well.

Review of The Charlotte

Happy memories 4*

The Charlotte in Leicester will always be close to my heart as the setting for the first ever proper gig I went to (Coldplay, June 2000 if you’re interested!) it’s a great place to catch bands on their way up.

Review of Fishers Restaurant

29 Apr 08, 11:02

Great Fish! 4*

As the name suggests this is a fish restaurant and a mighty good one at that! It's busy, if anything the tables are a bit too close together. It's quite pricy (a 3 course meal for 2 with wine was about £75) but worth it for a special occaision. With it being in Oxford however it was packed with wealthy students who don't need a special occaision to splash out and were in jeans and hats with books piled up on the tables which spoilt it a bit. The food and the menu were outstanding though.

Review of Sugar

24 Apr 08, 13:16

Quite hip for leam 4*

This is quite a small club, there's always a queue but that makes it feel quite exclusive. The main room is upstairs on the first floor, there are booths with illuminated tables, a giant egg just the right size for 2! tables at the back and a reasonable sized dance floor that is always heaving.

Review of The White Horse

24 Apr 08, 13:11

Transformation! 4*

When I lived in Leam this was a rough and run down old school pub but on a recent visit to the town I found it had been transformed. A really cosy and intimate atmosphere, roaring log fire, great selection of drinks and nibbles. Menu was good but food was a bit disappointing. They also have a selection of board games you can borrow if you get board of talking to your mates.

Review of Sozzled Sausage

24 Apr 08, 13:06

Great! 4*

This is a great pub / restaurant. It has a lovely feel to it, light and relaxed with seating inside the main building and in a conservatory at the back. Sausage and mash is becoming more popular on our high streets with brands such as The Pie Shop but the sozzeled sausage is the original and best.

Review of Saxon Mill Harvester

24 Apr 08, 13:03

Is this really a harvester?! 4*

The Saxon Mill has a lovely setting in the Warwickshire countryside next to the river. This does mean you need a designated driver, but if you’ve got relatives coming to visit this is a good choice for an impressive Sunday Lunch. The water wheel still turns and it has a lot of character even though the décor has been brought up to date. Portions are generous and their sticky toffee pudding is probably the best I’ve ever had.

Review of The Newbold Bar & Brasserie

24 Apr 08, 13:02

Lovely Grub 4*

The Newbold’s gastro pub style is probably a bit passé now but the food is really good. Upstairs from the main bar they have a more formal restaurant; I don’t think you’d be disappointed if you’re other half booked it for a date.

Review of Toyk Cafe

24 Apr 08, 12:59

Tres Chic 4*

Toyk is a very hip little café, perfect for ladies (and students!) who lunch. They serve a selection of sandwiches and homemade biscuits. It’s quite small so gets very busy at peak times. A great place to catch up with friends or have some quiet time with a newspaper.

Review of Oriental Star

24 Apr 08, 12:59

Great Value! 4*

The oriental star is a great all you can eat buffet, it’s no frills good value so popular with students. The daytime buffet is approximately £5, going up to a £10 after 5pm when they bring out the crispy duck. They also have a takeaway service allowing you to fill up a Tupperware from the buffet with all your favourites, this is probably the best option as it’s only about £5 and you can fit more than enough in the box.

Review of Empire Wine Stores

23 Apr 08, 17:12

Good selection, good location. 4*

This is a good little shop offering a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. They also sell chocolate. The location is handy due to it's proximity to La Fibule which is bring your own booze.

Bacon Butties! 4*

A little local bakers they offer a variety of freshly baked bread, including soda bread and they also do breakfast baps on the weekend which is great if you're feeling too hungover to cook something up yourself! The cake selection is a little uninspiring though.

Review of La Plancha

23 Apr 08, 17:00

Nice place! 4*

This is a really nice restaurant, I would agree that it's a little expensive, you won't feel stuffed unless you really splash out but it's got a lot of character and charm. If you are booking in advance I recommed you try to get the table in the window upstairs, the central location of the restaurant means that you can people watch the whole of Moseley!

Review of All Bar One

23 Apr 08, 16:10

Good choice 4*

Like the nearby Pitcher and Piano, All Bar One is a popular with office workers; it’s got outside seating next to the canal, a large main bar area and an upstairs space that can be reserved. They serve a menu of salads, sandwiches, burgers and tapas.

Review of Pitcher & Piano

Suited and Booted 4*

This place is popular with the workers at the surrounding offices so the clientele are generally quite smart. There’s plenty of seating (they serve food) and a nice downstairs area with booths and areas can be reserved for groups in advance. It’s quite expensive but the wine / cocktails are nice. Located next to the canal it’s a lovely setting.

Review of Snobs

23 Apr 08, 16:08

Filthy Gorgeous 4*

Snobs is gross HOWEVER I love it. Apparently it’s not been updated in 20 years and although it shows signs of wear it doesn’t look out of date, it’s the perfect size, has the perfect mix of music and is always rammed. Get drunk before you go is obvious advice but still worth mentioning, they only sell bottled beer or atrocious cheap spirits with lemonade or coke. There is a main room that plays predominantly contemporary indie hits and a smaller room with classic indie, soul and motown.

Review of The Actress & Bishop

23 Apr 08, 16:08

Good venue, good atmosphere 4*

This is quite a standard pub in many ways, traditional décor, ugly carpet and flashing gambling machines, however the location and atmosphere take it above average. Located in the smart St. Pauls area of the city it gives it an air of cool and exclusivity. There is a venue upstairs that’s just the right size for hip local bands.

Review of Lush

LUSH! 4*

Lush by name lush by nature! Some people find the smell a bit overpowering but I love it in the stores. It’s very girly, lots of bright colours and glitter and the packaging is gorgeous so it’s good for gifts. Their product range includes soap, shampoo, face packs, bath bombs and massage bars.

Review of Nando's

22 Apr 08, 13:13

Best Nandos in Birmingham 4*

I've given this 4 stars as I think it's above the average nandos. There are 3 in Birmingham city centre alone but this one is my favourite. Located right next to cineworld it's a good choice for pre film eats. It's quite big and not as busy as the other two so has less of a fast food feel.

Review of Jimmy Spice's

22 Apr 08, 13:10

Proper Spice! 4*

The phenomenon of the all you can eat buffet has proven popular in Birmingham in recent years but in my opinion Jimmy Spices does it best. The restuarant is large without feeling like an air hanger so there is still a nice atmosphere. There is a great choice of salads, italian, chinese, thai and indian dishes. You can see the chefs at work preparing food to order such as stir frys and fresh naan bread. The food is delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Only slight weakness is the desert selection of Mr. Whipy style ice cream and sweets.

Great food and sangria! 4*

Good venue for a double date or a night out with the girls. I recommend getting a jug of sangria (they have a variety of flavours) and ordering plenty of dishes. Tapas is quite good if you don't want anything too heavy as it doesn't leave you as stuffed as some other cuisine's.

Review of Holiday Inn

21 Apr 08, 16:20

Nicer than average 4*

I've stayed here several times now and each time the experience has been enjoyable. It's pretty much what you expect from a Holiday Inn - standard rooms, reasonable pricing - but I think the location is nicer than average - it sits next to the old boat museum in Ellesmere Port and the main body of the hotal has been built in the style of the older buildings around it, so it doesn't feel like you are pulling up to a Holiday Inn when you arrive. The other reason the location is so good is because it's so close to Chester and Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village - perfect for shopaholics! The inside of the hotal is just as pleasant, with a separate bar and restaurant overlooking the waterfront (nice food in the restaurant), and adaquate swimming pool and gym facilities. The staff are also friendly and helpful. But the best bit about my stays has always been...the breakfast! All you can eat, you can choose from continental or full english, or have both (like me). So, not the place to go if you're looking for absolute luxury, but a very satisfying and comfortable hotel all the same.

Review of Chiquito

21 Apr 08, 16:17

Good Value 4*

I came here not quite knowing what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was welcoming and the staff were friendly and helpful. I found the food was really tasty and there was plenty of it - the portions were very generous. I thought the prices were reasonable considering the quality of the food (my Belgian waffle toffee desert was yummy!!), and although we were a table of 6 we weren't left waiting ages for our food. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and I'm looking forward to going back when I've hit the gym to compensate first!

A great bar for any night out! Really good food offers, I particularly like 241 pizza and pasta offers - and a free jug of Carling! they always show live sport but doesn't have any trouble like a lot of sport venues. It's also a great place to either start or end a big night, with ample room for dancing upstairs. One of my favourite bars in town!!

Review of Eat

21 Apr 08, 15:56

Tasty Treat 4*

Eat in Brindley place is a great lunchtime choice. They have a large selection of sandwiches, baguettes, soups and salads. The soup is particularly exceptional but all the produce is of a high quality. Certain items are labelled as ‘less than 55 fat’ but other than that labelling is poor, you can check nutritional information on their website, which I recommend as the baguettes and toasties are LOADED. There is plenty of seating, although be warned you are charged more to eat in.

Review of Hare & Hounds

21 Apr 08, 12:44

Best choice in K'heath 4*

Hare and Hounds is a great pub, lots of space with a cool venue upstairs. They stock Tyrell’s crisps which are divine. There are picnic tables outside on the street so not quite as good as the luxurious beer garden at the Fighting Cock’s in Moseley. No menu but I believe you can order takeaway curry from down the road and eat it in the pub.

Great Menu! 4*

I'd never been to a Turkish restaurant before but what a great introduction. One of the best menu's I've ever seen! I wanted to try everything. A range of priced dishes to suit different budgets. I had the Malaysian king prawn curry, huge prawns in their shells, clearly high quality ingredients. All my companions went for the shoulder of lamb following a previous visit having enjoyed it so much. Deserts were also of a high quality. Only slightly odd thing was that there was no music and I think this could have added to the ambiance.

Dragonfly was a good little find, when we were there it was really quiet so no queuing and comfy seating. There is an extensive cocktail menu and it was nicely decorated. Slightly odd quirky was a selection of about 30 different pairs of trainers, unworn and with their boxes displayed above the bar.

This is a flagship Boots store, it has everything! Baby stuff and photo developing is downstairs (they’ve got easy to use computer screens so that you can download pictures from your camera and get them printed either within the hour or 24 hours) they also have an NHS walk in centre. Review of St Pauls Mcdonald's

16 Apr 08, 12:48

Good hotel RUBBISH spa!! 4*

This is a very nice hotel, clean, modern, good location and friendly staff. It has a choice of 2 restaurants and a plush champagne bar however the spa facilities left a lot to be desired. The spa staff came across as untrained and were very unhelpful. We came on a package deal and so were not allowed robes which seemed very tight and meant our towels got drenched and were soon useless. There is no Jacuzzi (surely a basic requirement) and the masseuse had smelly feet which were very off putting. If you just need somewhere to stay go for it but if you are looking for a spa look elsewhere.

Review of Tequila's

Worth the walk! 4*

Tequilas is a lovely Mexican with lots of character. It’s definitely worth the trek up steep hill to avoid the chain outlets near the brayford. Prices are reasonable and the portions are very generous (I was stuffed!) Just 2 warnings, the floor is very slipy and there is a slight slope (I fell over!) and I do not recommend the deep fried ice cream.

Great Venue 4*

The rainbow in Digbeth is a great venue. A little bit grimy with a fairly small selection of drinks and atrocious toilets but it’s a bit different and there’s a great atmosphere. The front of the venue is standard pub territory but equipped with a DJ booth and a small dance floor. Out back there is a covered courtyard where the bands play. There is even a BBQ serving up burgers and vegetarian kebabs for when you get peckish.

Indie Bar 4*

A good indie bar / venue, a bit cramped but if you can bag a table upstairs then you're sorted. There is often a cool film / tv series playing on a projector on the wall. It might make me sound a bit old but the music is just a bit too loud, it's too small to dance but too loud to chat. If they turned it down a bit it would be perfect!

Review of Lafibule Moroccan Restaurant

15 Apr 08, 15:01

Something a bit different 4*

If you're fed up of the usual indian, italian or chinese try this Moroccan restaurant out. It's got an authentic theme to the decor and it's just the right size, not to big not too small. There is a good choice of mains and starters the food isn't as spicy as indian or chinese but it's still very tasty. It's bring your own booze which is always a bonus. The dessert menu is a little lacking, the 'morrocan pastries' used to be genuine baklava but they are now a bit rubbish. Service is ok. I was given a finger bowl as I had ordered prawns and the water was straight out the kettle and I burned my fingers so watch out! Apart from that, a good choice.

Review of Goose At The Fighting Cocks

15 Apr 08, 14:53

Popular place 4*

The Fighting Cocks is probably the nicest pub in Moseley, but as a result it's the busiest so be prepared for long waits at the bar and limited seating or even standing room. However it is worth it, the decor is lovely, the selection of drinks is excellent, both soft and alcholic with everything from smoothies to strawberry beer. The beer garden is a triumph, quite big with just as much attention paid to the outside furnature and decor as to the inside. There is a covered shed that is heated so it's possible to sit outside in even the chilliest conditions. They do offer food but this can be a bit more hit and miss, I've had a bad roast / risotto but their ploughmans was the best I've ever had. So approach the menu with caution. Overall a good night out.

Review of Vintage UK

15 Apr 08, 14:03

Too cool for school 4*

If you like the vintage look this is the place for you. A large warehouse in digbeth, painted bright yellow so you can't miss it, chock full of vintage delights. For men there are plenty of vintage 501s, suits, shirts and jackets for ladies there is an abundance of 80s glitter, shoes, bags and accessories. It is a bit too cool for school though so be prepared if you are the type to get intimidated by indie hipsters. Prices are reasonable and they only take card payment for items over £10.

Cool bar, stay clear of 'cocktails' 4*

This is a bit of a novelty place so don't go if you have a dislike for 'disney style' gothic, but if you're sick of the generic weatherspoons bar I suggest you try this place out. The decor is very OTT but really gives that dungeon come vampire castle feel. There is a spooky recorded voice playing in the toilets (if you can find them! They are downstairs by the way) Downstairs is dark and atmospheric and there are comfy booths to sit in. They also have a menu of cocktails each themed around the 7 deadly sins. We ordered Envy and it was DISGUSTING, apparently the beer wasn't up to much either but for a change of scene I think it's worth a try.
