Review of Philpotts Quality Sandwiches

28 May 08, 14:09

THE BEST SANDWICHES 5*

Philpotts is by far the best quality takeaway lunch you could hope for! If you like food philpotts is like a treasure trove of treats. Due to the regeneration of the edgbaston shopping centre (e.g. it has been demolished) this branch has moved to broadway plaza and it's definitely worth the walk!

Philpotts is a chain (there are 4 branches in Brum) but it's small enough to feel special. There is a selection of pre prepared sandwiches and salads or you can have it prepared infront of you to your EXACT specifications (from the type of bread, butter or olive oil, fillings, seasonings, garnish etc. etc. ) There is a regular menu + daily specials.

If you facy something hot they have a carvery counter serving perfect hot sandwiches and wraps and they also do soups, although I think this is one thing that Eat does better, Philpotts soup is a little salty.

They also sell fruit, tyrells crisps and cakes.

Review of Chocolate Soup

29 Apr 08, 10:45

AMAZING! 5*

I have a very sweet tooth and chocolate soup is a match for even the most hardcore chocoholic. The hot chocolate isn't made from second rate powder, oh no! huge vats of molten chocolate are spooned into generous mugs and mixed with hot milk. It is the best hot chocolate I have ever had. They offer a range of toppings from traditional marshmallows to aero pieces and cookies. I am just disappointed it's not a chain so I can't get them in Birmingham. Although that's probably a good thing, I'd be the size of a house!

Review of Redmore Inn

Great Location 5*

The Redmore Inn, is in such a beautiful setting with views for miles of green fields and fantastic walks around. It has good home cooked food which is all fresh and from local suppliers. The atmosphere is very friendly, everybody talks to you and children are welcome also.

Review of Selfridges

23 Apr 08, 16:07

Pure luxury 5*

I love Selfridges!! It has been the making of Birmingham. It has given us a landmark and a great place to shop. It’s as unique inside as it is out, a complete opposite to the traditional London store it feels like a space ship inside. It has a pricey reputation but it actually has things to suit most budgets, from familiar high street brands to top designers. They have brands you won’t find anywhere else in the city and are constantly changing and updating. The food hall is very exciting a great variety of food to either eat in or takeaway.

Review of Fudge Kitchen

23 Apr 08, 12:37

THE BEST FUDGE IN THE WORLD 5*

OMG! I love this fuge, I first tried it at the BCC good food show, fell in love but there isn't a shop in Birmingham (probably for the best) so when I visited edinbugh I made a beeline for this place. There is a great range of flavours and you can watch demonstations of them making it. It is fiendishly expensive but well worth it. If you don't live near one of their shops (they are dotted around the country) you can order it online and it is freezable.

Review of Shimla Pinks

22 Apr 08, 13:19

A curry experience 5*

This is expensive for curry but you are paying for the experience. It's a massive place with a real buzz about it. The decor is really modern and quite unique, not like any other curry house I've been to before. There is real attention to detail right down to the cutlery and tablewear. Ladypool road is grubby this is glamour.

Review of Point Hotel

16 Apr 08, 16:32

Fab! 5*

The point is a really fabulous hotel! Akin to malmaison in style, space and quality but much better value. We stayed there between Christmas and New Year and got a great deal. Our room was huge, the bed was huge the TV was huge and the huge window looked out over the castle. We ate in the restaurant and drank in the hotel bar, both of which were of a high standard. The bar was quite expensive but the cocktails were very good. Only tiny criticism is that it was very dark, even with the lights on it’s very dim, romantic but hard to apply makeup!

Review of Ben's Cookies

16 Apr 08, 12:58

BEST cookies in the WORLD 5*

These are the best cookies in the whole world. They are about £1 each but completely worth it. They are all made on site so are normally still warm in the middle. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, really rich in flavour a great treat. only downside is it's a small place so there's not much seating.

Review of Electric Cinema

16 Apr 08, 12:54

Good date venue 5*

This is a perfect date location! It's the oldest cinema in the country, faithfully restored to it's 1920s origins. It's only got one screen so there isn't a large selection of films so you might need to wait a while for something you want to see to come up. You can choose between £5 standard seats or pay £10 to sit in the sofas at the back, complete with coffe table so you have somewhere to put your drinks and snacks. The venue is licenced so you can order beer and spirits as well as homemade busicuits and cake. Nothing better than settling down to a film you're keen to see with a vodka cranberry and a slice of cake!!

Review of Curry Garden Restaurant

15 Apr 08, 14:47

Top take away choice 5*

This is a great take away, they deliver for free, or you can have a discount if you collect. A good menu with your usual favourites + some more unusual dishes. My favourite is 'South Indian Garlic Balti', this is great for garlic lovers but not for the faint hearted. Portions are generous and you get free poppadom, onion salad and raita.

Review of Sabai - Sabai

15 Apr 08, 14:34

The Best Restaurant in Birmingham! 5*

This is my favourite restaurant in the city. I love thai food so have sampled lots of it in various restaurants and this is the best I've tasted. It's teeny tiny so I would recommend that you book in advance. The decor is a little odd with a large graffiti style mural on the wall but the atmosphere is great as it's intimate and candle lit. My recommendation is garlic and pepper mussels followed by king prawn red curry (the king prawns are HUGE) service is friendly.

Review of Nicky Clarke

15 Apr 08, 14:16

Your hairdresser search is over! 5*

After moving to Birmingham about 3 years ago I road tested several salons in the city centre but didn't find any where that got the cut or the atmosphere quite right but I am now a fully paid up platinum card member of Nicky Clarke in the Mailbox. If like me you see getting your hair done as a bit of a luxury I thouroughly recommend this place. The salon itself is really nice, neutral colours huge mirrors and flower arrangements and a fashion collage next to the basins. The staff are stylish and friendly, you get the usual hot drinks and magazine selections. They have a large support staff in addition to the stylists who are on hand for excellent head massage and assistance in blowdrying and styling your hair so you feel like there is team of people looking after you. If you become a regular client you are rewarded with a 'platinum card' that has a host of benefits. A cut and blow dry is approximately £45.
