Review of Lincoln Cathedral

28 May 08, 15:30

Beautiful! 4*

Lincoln is not really a famous city but it really is overlooked. This is such a significant landmark in the region (the scale of the cathedral and the flat lincolnshire landscape means it can me seen for miles around) It's so beautiful and situated right next to the castle you can check out both!

It was given a slight tourism boost recently as it was used as a location for the da vinci code movie.

In winter it looks beautiful, all lit up with a Christmas tree under the arch and on a good day in summer the grass outside is the perfect place to sit with an ice cream from the parlour nearby.

Review of Quayside

29 Apr 08, 11:46

Indie kids rejoice 4*

Quayside is a scream pub so student friendly, cheap and cheerful. There are huge comfy sofas, pool tables and a video juke box. They serve food in the day which is standard chain pub stuff. Their USP, particularly in a town with little to offer in the way of nightclubs is a large venue upstairs that hosts indie / rock discos.

Review of Glass House

29 Apr 08, 11:45

Dull 2*

The glass house is located close to the university, so I would expect a young crowd in the evenings. I’ve only ever been in the day and found it quite empty and dark. It’s a chain place so lacking in atmosphere and falls foul of mock traditional style pub décor.

Review of Duke Of Wellington

29 Apr 08, 11:44

Hidden venue 3*

The Duke of Wellington is a traditional pub, slightly off the beaten track but still town centre. It’s familiar to me because of the upstairs ‘bivouac’ venue; it has been hosting gigs from local bands for several years (at least 7yrs). Look out for local listings.

Review of Walkabout Inn

29 Apr 08, 11:43

Same old same old 3*

Walkabouts are the same nationwide so there’s not a lot to say. There are 2 floors, the upper of which can be hired out for private functions. They show sporting events on plasma screens. The music is cheesy.

Review of Dogma Bar

29 Apr 08, 11:43

Cocktails 3*

For those of you who don’t have a local Dogma, it’s similar to Revolution. Cocktail pitchers, shots and a fashionable menu of ‘sharers’ and posh breads. It’s bigger than Revolution, on 2 floors and is always packed out. There is a dance floor, pool table and if you’re going for lunch there is a terrace area out the back with lots of tables.

Review of Ritzy

29 Apr 08, 11:42

Hazard Warning 1*

Ritzy is rough. Lincoln is very much lacking in night clubs so if you want to be out till the small hours drinking cheap brightly coloured vodka based products and pull a random guy this is the place, however if sticky floor and predictable DJ sets are not your scene steer clear. Also, I had my bag nicked from here so watch your back.

Review of Chimichanga

29 Apr 08, 11:41

Not great 2*

Chimichanga is ok; it’s a little bit too ‘themed’ for my liking. The food was ok and it’s busy but somehow lacking in atmosphere, the staff came across as inexperienced. I prefer tequilas at the top of steep hill. If you don’t fancy the walk Tootsies and Ask are nicer chain places by the brayford.

Review of ASK

29 Apr 08, 11:40

Good pizza 3*

A good example of the chain, the glass fronted restaurant looks out over the brayford and the atmosphere is bright, busy and clean. Good for friends, family or romance.

Review of Cafe Zoot

29 Apr 08, 11:39

Romantic 3*

Café Zoot is an intimate little restaurant, good for couples. The bail gate is a much more romantic setting that the busy high street or brayford area of town

Review of The Ice Cream Parlour

29 Apr 08, 11:38

Truely scrumptious 3*

The ice cream parlour is a definite destination place, right at the top of steep hill between the cathedral and the castle it’s obviously got a big tourist appeal but it’s worth the walk from town for locals as well. It’s got an old fashioned feel, complete with 1950s working juke box downstairs. There are a good range of flavours and cones.

Review of Po Boys

29 Apr 08, 11:38

Go for lunch 4*

Po Boys is a great independent café. Downstairs they sell a selection of hot drinks, bottled juices, sandwiches and cakes and the seating upstairs is lovely. It’s not normally too busy and there’s normally good music playing. Large windows look out onto the street below and flood the place with light.

Review of Pimento Tea Rooms

29 Apr 08, 11:37

Quaint 3*

Pimento is a bit middle aged, expensive middle aged lady clothes but they also have nice jewellery that’s quite unique and reasonably priced. The café / shop combo is a quaint idea. Take your mum she will love it.

Review of Revolution Bar

29 Apr 08, 11:36

Small but perfectly formed 4*

This is quite a small Revolution and is very popular so it’s always really packed, however a lot of people head to Ritzy at about 10.30 – 11pm so if you’re not hitting the clubs it’s a good place to end the night.

Review of Chicago Rock Cafe

29 Apr 08, 11:35

Gross 1*

The Chicago Rock Café is too big and very rough. You’ll probably be familiar with the chain, and this is a particularly horrible example. It has no atmosphere and there are always ropey looking women puffing away outside.

Review of Orgasmic Cafe

29 Apr 08, 11:35

Don't let name put you off! 4*

Orgasmic is a café / wine bar, don’t be put off by the name it’s actually quite classy inside. The décor is lots of pine and pale yellow paint. In the evenings is intimate and candle lit and by day they serve proper coffee and nice food. Good for groups of girls or couples.

Review of Tootsies

29 Apr 08, 11:34

Good burgers 4*

Tootsies is an odd one, the menu is the sort of thing you’d expect at TGI Friday’s (burgers, ribs, onion rings etc.) but the décor it far more sophisticated. It’s like TGI Friday’s for grown ups. It’s relatively pricey but the food is really good. The riverside location is nice as well.

Review of Tequila's

16 Apr 08, 12:46

Worth the walk! 4*

Tequilas is a lovely Mexican with lots of character. It’s definitely worth the trek up steep hill to avoid the chain outlets near the brayford. Prices are reasonable and the portions are very generous (I was stuffed!) Just 2 warnings, the floor is very slipy and there is a slight slope (I fell over!) and I do not recommend the deep fried ice cream.
