Review of Lillywhites

25 May 08, 15:05

JJB on steroids 4*

Overwhelmingly big sports shop carrying everything you'd ever want and a hell of a lot of stuff you'd never want. Plenty of replica shirts and footwear and close to a tube station. Only thing that really lets it down is its name and the football team its named after.

Review of Fulham Football Club

25 May 08, 15:01

Ful of tourists 4*

Endearingly old fashioned with wooden seats and a 'neutrals' section, Craven Cottage is one of the last truly unique football stadiums in England. Right on the river and regularly populated by tourists who just want to see some top flight football while they're in London, don't expect a great atmosphere but do expect a good afternoon and three points!

Review of Manchester United Football Club

Silence is Golden 4*

Undoubtedly one of the best stadiums in the world. The biggest in the English Premiership and not too hard to get to either. Seeing your team win here is something special, especially as, for all that is said about their great support base, 67,000 people can produce a deafening silence!

Review of Le Bateau Bistro

21 May 08, 16:31

Ship shape 4*

Really good atmosphere here. Nice bar with a continental atmosphere to it and although I didn't eat here the menu looks good. Also played some good music but not so loud you couldn't chat to your friends. Think they can cater for private functions as well. Recommended.

Review of David Phillips

21 May 08, 16:28

Helpful staff 4*

Looking for a flat in north London was a real mine field but this might be a place to start. Very knowledgable friendly staff who offered good advice and resolved maintenance problems at the property I rented quickly and with minimal fuss.

Review of Coach & Horses Inn

21 May 08, 10:42

Good country pub 4*

Good pub food here and the staff are always very friendly and welcoming. There's a good choice of old school ales and it's well located if walking in the countryside is your thing. Only thing that lets this place down is how LONG their pub quiz goes on for!

Review of Monsoon

21 May 08, 10:17

Bright and breezey 4*

Like the menswear here and not many blokes seem to know Monsoon do mens clothing now if you're someone who doesn't like wearing the exact same thing as everyone else this may be the place for you. Not all their branches stock the mens lines either so this one is definitely worth a look. Staff were helpful when I couldn't find stuff in my size and were good at suggesting alternatives.

Review of H & M

21 May 08, 10:13

Cheap as chips 4*

Better than most H&M stores on the basis that you don't spend half your time tripping over clothes that have been dropped and left on the floor! Always reasonably priced as well. Only downside to H&M is that whatever you buy, you'll probably know at least one other person who owns the exact same thing!

Review of Bournemouth Jeans

18 May 08, 15:11

Jeans central! 4*

Really like Bournemouth Jeans. Loads of brands and styles to choose from and staff who are helpful without being too in your face. Also do a good selection of tshirts to go with your new denims.

Review of JJB Sports

18 May 08, 15:02

busy busy 4*

Plenty on offer here but it does get incredibly busy on saturdays so be prepared to que. Always a bit disappointed that very few local sports stores offer shirts for the local league teams (Bournemouth, Southampton, Pompey etc) but I guess if you follow any of them you get a shirt at the ground. Huge selection of football shirts and boots here and definitely recommended.

Review of El Molino Coffee Shop

16 May 08, 17:24

Charismatic 4*

Run by a really charismatic Spanish guy who does a great job of making you feel a valued customer. Another cafe that must have cashed in on Arsenal's move to the Emirates Stadium. Really nice little cafe/deli and close to Holloway Road tube and buses.

Review of The Gunners

16 May 08, 17:17

Who's that team we call the Arsenal... 4*

Prefer the 12 Pins in Finsbury Park myself but if you want a pre-match pint and to surround yourself with Arsenal stash on the walls then this is the place for you. You can also hire out the elevated level which I think is a good bit of business on the pub's part. Many a happy afternoons/evenings drinking done in here.

Review of The Woodbine

16 May 08, 17:14

Changing times 4*

This was one of my favourite pre-match pubs when the Arsenal were still playing at the old stadium. Since the move around the corner the Woodbine's clearly decided to try and broaden its market a bit and has done a good job, although it is very dark in here now. Still pop in here just not before games so much anymore.

Review of Candid Cafe

15 May 08, 11:53

Hidden treasure 4*

Really tucked away this one (despite being right next to the tube) and you wouldn't necessarily find it if you weren't looking for it. Defenitely worth a visit though as it's completely different from just about any other cafe. High ceilings and lots of nice art to look at on the walls and does good coffee and cakes as well. Unique.

Review of The Wardrobe

14 May 08, 16:42

Good variety 4*

Lots of nice stuff in here and they change their stock quite regularly as well so you'll often find something new. Also close to other similar shops if you're putting an outfit together. Helpful staff as well who'll offer advice and suggestions if you want them.

Review of Topman

14 May 08, 16:39

Much improved 4*

Is it just me or has Topman really come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years? They've ditched a lot of their stupid slogan tshirts and are now concentrating on making clothes that people actually want. Their formal stuff in particular is much better than it used to be. This branch also has free parking and proximity to other big name shops to recommend it.

Review of Richmond Classics

14 May 08, 16:32

Sorry, can't hear you 4*

Great selection, loads of top brands and staff that know their stuff. Only thing that lets this place down is how ridiculously loud their music is. Why some places think this encourages you to spend money is beyond me. Still one of the best places for mens clothing in Bournemouth though.

Review of Revolution Bar

13 May 08, 20:04

Revolutionary 4*

Massive fan of vodka revolution. Every sort of vodka you can think of as well as few you probably didn't think even existed and this one's nicely set away from the city centre. Good music as well, only thing i would say is don't pitch up in a big single sex group and expect to be let in!

Review of Thekla

13 May 08, 19:59

Much improved 4*

Definitely better since the refurb. Formerly somewhere where you could get high for free just by breathing in Thekla's definitley worth a visit now and you've got to love the novelty of somewhere that's on a boat!

Review of George It's A Scream

13 May 08, 19:56

Not so mellow yellow 4*

Another pub that's great if you're a student (with a yellow card) and probably not so great if you're not. All the usual things that you love about scream pubs (ie the burgers and some good drinks deals!) and great if you're looking to go drinking withyour football/rugby team and be tolerated!

Review of Sports Gear Weymouth

12 May 08, 17:09

Good customer service 4*

My first ever pair of football boots came from here some 16 years ago. I forget the name of the guy who runs this place but I know he's a nice bloke who looks after his customers which is borne out by the fact this place has withstood challenges from JJB and All Sports down the years.

Review of Best Flowers

12 May 08, 17:04

Closest to hospital 4*

The closest florist in Dorchester to the County Hospital which, on paper, is convenient if they hadn't banned flowers in some of their wards! Good florist with friendly staff who'll talk you through what's what if you're clearly struggling!

Review of Rajpoot Tandoori Restaurant

11 May 08, 19:46

Tolerant 4*

Can never decide if I prefer this place to The Spice Centre but this place probably edges it because they're more tolerant of big groups who are pissed. Surely the hall mark of a good curry house?!

Review of Stuart Turners

11 May 08, 19:44

Old school 4*

I love this place. When I was 16 I went through a phase of smoking cigars (misguidedly thinking that looked good). The guy that runs this place would always offer great banter about this whenever I went in. That and a great selection of chocolate etc gets this place a good rating!

Review of Waitrose

11 May 08, 19:41

Location location location 4*

I'm told this branch of Waitrose is the 5th most profitable of all John Lewis' food stores. Whether that's based on the fact its not one of their biggest or the relatively affluent clientele I'm not sure but it's certainly well located in the town centre and an hour and a halfs car parking is free if you buy something here.

Review of Jaeger Man

11 May 08, 19:38

Touch of class 4*

Dorchester is crying out for more shops like this, and given the increasingly affluent Poundbury population here I'm surprised more haven't materialised. Good choice of good quality shirts, suits and ties both classic and contemporary with excellent customer service.

Review of Gassy Jacks

Wednesday at Gassys yeh? 4*

Great for students on a Wednesday night. If you've just started at Cardiff or UWIC and aren't quite sure what's what yet then join a sports team , make sure you can see off a pint to a stopwatch and get yourself here on a Wednesday night. Also does good food and has a big screen for sport.

Review of Philharmonic Bar

28 Apr 08, 18:32

Big Philly Style 4*

A must for a night out in Cardiff. Drunk on Funk used to be a great night but not sure if it still goes on. Even if it doesn't check this place out - smooth grooves, good choice of drinks and great if there's a big game on at the Millenium Stadium.

Review of The Yard

28 Apr 08, 18:30

Tres chic 4*

Classy bar with an uber modern feel to it and food and drink to match. Stands out on St Marys Street as you generally won't find any peroxide blondes being sick on the floor with a mini skirt around their waist. Upmarket without being too pretentious this is definitely somewhere you've got to go if you're in town.

Review of Incognito

28 Apr 08, 18:25

Get the drinks in 4*

One of the best venues not in the city centre. Good food, good cocktails and very accomodating for large groups. A must if you're working your way from Cathays into town and somewhere you should check out even if you're not.

Review of Parkwood Florists

Comes up smelling of roses 4*

This place put together a beautiful boquet of flowers for me at relatively short notice and were able to deliver at an exact time for me. Great service and a wide selection of flowers.

Review of Dorothy Inn

28 Apr 08, 18:08

An institution 4*

Ah, Dorothys! Sadly recently shorn of its 24 licence but an institution in West Dorset and has an unfair reputation of being a bit rough. Friendly staff and a general all round good watering hole.

Review of Tickled Hippy

28 Apr 08, 08:47

Tickled pink 4*

Really like the Tickled Hippy. Good selection of drinks, friendly staff, often have good live music and a venue that will please all tastes. Right on the beach, it is definitely worth a visit.

Review of Baracuda Bar

28 Apr 08, 08:45

A good bet 4*

Formerly the Rectory, Baracuda is definitely worth a visit. Good selection of drinks and food and plenty of tv screens to watch live sport. A 'snout' loyalty card also lets you cash in on some special offers and will only cost you £1.

Review of Bar Twenty Twelve

28 Apr 08, 08:42

Worth a visit 4*

Never been sure about the significance of its name but it is particularly apt given the area will be hosting the Olympic sailing events. One of the best venues in Weymouth. Good music and a wide variety of spirits. Recommended.

Review of Smugglers Inn

28 Apr 08, 08:38

Out on a limb 4*

I like the Smugglers but the fact it's in the middle of nowhere means someone will always have to be the designated driver. the food is very good and it's a great location for a scenic walk. Gets very busy in the summer which reflects well upon the pub and its staff.

Review of Jones Bootmakers

28 Apr 08, 08:35

Back to the old school 4*

Good shoes that will last and friendly, knowledgable customer service. Staff here know what they're talking about and aren't just looking to stand around looking good. Bought a great pair of shoes there which I've had for a year and still look great.

Review of Tom Brown's

28 Apr 08, 08:26

Much improved 4*

Recently refurbished, Tom Brown's has really made best use of the smoking ban to bring in a fresh new feel to the pub. Fans of traditional ales can still find the famous Tom Brown's brew but those who avoided the place in the past can now benefit from good food, a great beer garden and the new light and airy decor.

Review of Dusk

25 Apr 08, 22:02

Cheap and Cheerful 4*

Probably the best place to finish your night in Weymouth. Cheap to get in, drinks not too expensive and close to the sea in case you feel the need for a swim at the end of the night!

Review of Dorchester Health Club

25 Apr 08, 21:59

Drop and give me 20! 4*

Gary Easter who runs this place is a top bloke. Friendly, supportive and always ready to offer help and advice but not overbearing in the way some gym people are. Everything you need for a good work out in a nice, tucked away setting and reasonably priced as well.

Review of Plaza 1 & 2

22 Apr 08, 21:06

Lights, camera... 4*

Despite increased local competition from Weymouth Cineworld The Plaza has continued to remain competitive both in its ticket prices and the selection of films on offer. The fact that local people continue to support the Plaza is great news for Dorchester, and is also testament to the friendly service from its staff.

Review of Gentz Barber Shop

22 Apr 08, 21:01

Something for the weekend? 4*

If you're looking for a shap hair cut that won't scalp your wallet Gentz is the place. Tammi and all the girls are chatty and friendly and are brilliant at remembering who you are and dispensing banter and great hair cuts in equal measure. Highly recommended.

Review of Octagan Coffee Shop

17 Apr 08, 14:49

The Great Eight 4*

Good food, good coffee and friendly staff all complement one of the most unusual constructions in prince Charles' toy town. One of Poundbury's longest established businesses The Octagon is well served by locals and by those from further afield.

Review of Brewers Arms Martinstown

17 Apr 08, 14:32

Arms wide open 4*

A warm, welcoming, traditional English country pub with an excellent variety of ales and a bar and restaurant menu to match. A garden with ample seating a good family friendly atmosphere makes for an enjoyable afternoon or evening in the countryside.

All's rosy in the garden 4*

Boasting the best beer garden in Dorchester The Station is the ideal venue for a few warm up pints before jumping on the train to Bournemouth. There's no shortage of big screens or tv channels either, making it a great place to watch live sport.
