Review of The Frog and Forget Me Not

Alfresco Drinking 4*

The Frog and Forget-Me-Not is a great little pub bordering Clapham Common. Decked out with knackered old sofas and picnic benches, it manages to avoid the pretentiousness of the area, making the whole atmosphere more charming than your usual pub/ bar.

I’ve never had the insight to buy food, relying solely on the wine instead, but I’ve heard good things. They serve Thai food during the week, and roasts at the weekend.

The roof terrace is a great spot for Sunday afternoon drinks, and quite a little sun trap – although it is a shame that they don’t do table service as after a few drinks the walk down to the bar seems more like a trek

Review of The Clapham Picture House

Picture Perfect 4*

Turn right down Venn Street and tucked away from the ‘bustle’ of Clapham high street, you will find the gorgeous little cinema that is the Clapham Picture House. The four screens offer an eclectic choice between mainstream films to arthouse cinema, and the inviting bar/café means that you can arrive well before the film starts for a drink or some Ben & Jerrys.

I love this cinema, and it is a great alternative to the chains you find ripping you off in town. The fact that you can take your wine into the film with you is an extra treat - although watch how much you drink because the seats are easy to fall asleep in!

Review of Clapham Tandoori

Clapham Tandoori 4*

The Clapham Tandoori is a great restaurant located just outside of Clapham Common tube. From the outside it looks fairly understated and you wouldnt necessarily stop there - but it is well worth a visit.

The menu is great and vast making hard to choose. Portions are healthy and the prices reasonable for the area.

The waiters are all very friendly and the service good. It was quiet when I went and we didnt need a reservation - but then it was a wednesday. If you were going at the weekend - it might be worth calling in advance.

Review of Esca

Great Delicatessen 3*

Another surprise on Clapham highstreet is Esca - a delicatessen that serves specialist foods from across Europe, great cakes, pastries and coffee. The shelves are full of tins, oils, coffees and other treats. It is open plan in design and has three large tables, where you sit with other customers, making the whole experience quite informal. As well as the array of foods to eat in or take away, hampers are available for picnics on the common.

Review of Guru Hair Salon

Hair cut at the weekend 3*

This place is great if you want to get your hair cut at the weekend. They are open on a saturday and sunday and if you call up in the morning there is a good chance that you will get an appointment that day. Staff are friendly and they look after you when you are there, although it is quite expensive and take cash as the card machine was broken.

The Big Breakfast 4*

If you walk into Clapham Old Town on a Sunday morning you will almost certainly see a small crowd of people huddled around the doorway to a small cafe. You would be easily forgiven for not noticing this otherwise inconspicuous buiding, but I would recommend that you join the queue. Inside you will find a relatively low key, no frills cafe but the breakfasts and smoothies make the wait the worth while. Quick service, good food, and cheap prices, and if you can persuade the waitresses to smile, you're doing well!

Review of Cafe Wanda

Cafe Wanda 4*

This low key cafe is a great spot for a weekend lunch, offering a menu which combines Polish dishes with English classics. The slightly eccentric waiters add to the atmosphere and will almost always encourage you to drink champagne and cocktails with your breakfast! Situated on Clapham high street, Cafe Wanda stands out as it offers individuality amongst a uniform high street.
