Review of Chromos Art Supplies
13 Nov 07, 22:33
Affordable art supplies...
This is a bit more affordable than Cross's at the other end of town. It is a bit hidden away on one of the street off the high street but its worth finding. This place has all that you need for art and crafting. The staff are really friendly and helpful

Review of Cross's

Art supplies...
Here they sell all that a budding artist needs. Loads of paints in all different varities, from poster to oil. They sell lots of paper, art books, brushes, pens. You name it they ve got it. They also do a photocopying service here too. Staff are helpful and know their stuff. Prices are quite high, but then art materials generally are. A good shop.

cards galore...
I'm a big fan of paperchase. I think they do the best cards, they re always a bit different and modern. They also sell some lovely wrapping paper and lots of bits and pieces for gift wrapping. They sell a good selection of diaries, photo albums and they also stock filofax refils.

Review of Debenhams
13 Nov 07, 17:00
rundown...
This store is slightly rundown and looks very tired. It is a land mark in the town and really needs some rejuvenation. It sells lots of major brands and is always well stocked. The staff are not always that friendly especially in the cosmetics section. It does have a great shoes section and is the only place to stock faith in Canterbury.

Review of Bhs

facelift...
BHS is a long standing landmark in Canterbury and has recently undergone a major facelift in line with the White Friars development. It still sells all the usual stuff clothes, shoes, bridal wear. They have really upped their home wear range and you can now get some great bargains that are really well designed. Overall - Nice new store.

Review of Pizza Hut
13 Nov 07, 16:52
long queues...
I dont know what it is about Pizza Hut in Canterbury but there is always a queue out of the door at lunctime, obviously its a town of pizza lovers or just a bargain. The lunchtime buffet is a good deal, but the choice of pizza here is pretty rubbish they never seem to put out of the good ones. The food is really salty and just not good for you. The service is ok, nothing special. I dont think its worth a wait in the cold

Review of Waterstone's
13 Nov 07, 16:47
a little bit of history too..
This is quite a big branch of Waterstones and has a good selection of fiction and non fiction. It also has a very good childrens section, complete with rocking horse. There is also lots of stuent help books downstairs in the basement. Here you will also find a bit of Roman history where part of a mosaic has been uncovered and is now on display.

beautiful clothes...
this branch of noa noa is really lovely. the white washed wooden floors and the great visuals give this store a really nice feel to it. the clothes here are feminine and delicate. they have some good bargains here too if you have a good look round. though generally the clothes are a bit more expensive than some places but they are of a higher quality.

Review of C&h Fabrics
13 Nov 07, 16:01
a bit of everything...
This shop only used to sell fabric for dress making and curtians as well as craft materials. Now it seems to be a jack of all trades. It does all the things it used to but now sells shoes, bags, and bits and pieces for the home. There is a bit too much going on now, and gets quite confusing. The place is very old fashioned and the decor is dated. It is a good place to go for all your crafting needs and fabrics. The staff are very knowledgeable and all seem to specialise in a certain area.

Review of C&h Coffee Shop
13 Nov 07, 15:57
light lunch...
This place serves hot lunches, such as jacket potatoes, toasties, omlettes, soups as well as sandwiches and baguettes. The food is pretty good for what it is. Prices are reasonable. The decor is pretty dated and the customers are usually old age pensioners or mums who take advantage of the baby changing facilties. They also have baby food, bottle warmers and high chairs here, so its actually pretty good for young families.

Review of Barton Veterinary Hospital
13 Nov 07, 15:20
a bad experience...
When we lived in Canterbury we always used this vets, but recently we had a bad experience with this vets and since then I have heard other bad stories about this place. My dog was very ill, she stayed at the vets over night. We were told she was improving and could come home. My mum went to collect her and we had to pay an HUGE amount of money for tablets etc. We only live down the road from the vets and my dog hardly made it home. Once home she was sick and looked awful. She obviously shouldnt have been sent home and she was no where near getting better. My mum took her straight back and sadly we had to have her put down as she was really old. We were really upset by how we were treated and feel as if they made the wrong decision and were only interested in our money. Other stories i have heard run along the same lines. So I wouldnt recommend anyone to go here

cheap bits and pieces...
This is a good place to come if you are looking for small little presents to keep your kids entertained. They have lots of silly little toys and things like glow in the drak stars. Most of the things here are inexpensive and good fun. They also sell some nice original old skool robots.

Review of Starbucks
13 Nov 07, 15:03
nice location...
This is what you would expect from a starbucks, good coffee and good service. What I particularly like about this Starbucks is its location. It is situated right next to Canterbury Cathedral. You can either sit and look out on to the town or you can sit and look at the Cathedral green and the grand building itself. There are lots of little nooks and crannies in this branch with lots of comfy sofas.

Review of Costa
13 Nov 07, 14:47
Tanning...
This is a good tanning parlour. The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable. They are also good at recommending how long you should use the machines for so as not to harm your skin. Here they have both stand up and lie down booths. I'm pretty sure they do spray tanning here too, but have never used it. The booths are always clean. They also have products you can use and you can occasionally get a free sample. They also do student discount and have a loyalty card system. Prices depend on how many minutes you re having, but they are reasonable and are in line with other such places

plenty of room...
This is a nice Costas, the service is good and the staff are friendly and quick. This is a really big Costa, so there is loads of room to sit down and you can find somewhere away from everyone else. There is also a good amount of seating outisde which is nice on a summers day. I have to recommend their chocolate frappes as they are so yummy

Review of Caffe Nero
13 Nov 07, 14:39
coffee in a listed building...
This is what you would expect from a Cafe Nero, good service and good coffee. What is special about this branch of Cafe Nero is the building it is in. It is a listed Elizabethan building, dotted around are old features that have had to be kept such as a stove and fireplace. This gives a somewhat boring chain shop a more quirky and original feel

Review of Whittard Of Chelsea
13 Nov 07, 14:34
a good Whitards...
This is a nice branch of Whitards, its quite small but has pretty much everything anyother store would have. The different thing about this branch is that it also sells hot drinks, cakes and pastries. There is a nice outside seating area where you can watch the hustle and bustle of the town. The drinks are a bit more expensive than your average but are tasty

Review of Marks & Spencer
13 Nov 07, 13:31
good store...
This Marks and Spencers has been here as long as I can remember and it has grown in size throughout the years. It no has a huge food hall, which always seems to be busy. It also has a cafe which is a bit more flashier that the usual Cafe Revive. I havent tried it but it looks good. There is a huge amount of womenswear here and they do all the collections apart from Autograph. There is also a good home ware section which also offers an ordering service for bigger items of furniture. The staff are really friendly and helpful as you would expect from M&S employees. The store always looks good and well presented

Review of French Connection
13 Nov 07, 13:28
good selection...
This is quite a big french connection so has more to offer than most branches. It is more centred around womens wear and therefore there is less to choose from in terms of mens wear. The store always looks good. Sales here are great and you can usually find a bargain. Staff are friendly and helpful

Karen Millen is relatively new to Canterbury. It is a really nice shop and always looks good. Karen Millen offers more formal wear and does really nice dresses. The staff are helpful and friendly. The prices are a bit more expensive than other high street stores like Topshop

Review of Hotel Chocolat Store
13 Nov 07, 12:46
chocolate heaven...
If you like chocolate then this is a good shop for you. Unfortunately, its not a hotel made out of chocolate but a shop that offers a huge range of chocolate treats. There is so much to choose from, bags of chocolate covered nuts to more fancy hand-made chocolates. This is an ideal place to come to get a gift for someone or maybe just treat yourself. The staff are very friendly and the prices vary on the type of chocolate you are purchasing but are generally reasonable

Review of Blockbuster
13 Nov 07, 12:42
its a shame...
that this is pretty much the only dvd rental place in town. It seems as though Blockbuster has managed to push out many of the smaller shops. This has meant that copies of new films go pretty quickly here, so if you want to see a particular film it may not be there! Staff are friendly enough. There are plenty of snacks available here. They also have computer games to rent as well as to buy.

Review of Angels

an eclectic mix...
This is a little boutique that has a lot to offer. It has a good range of jewellery, varying in price. Some cheap earrings to more expensive mid-range designer watches. They also sell a good range of womenswear, from casual to formal wear. In fact, if you have a prom or a formal do to go to this place is a really good place to look for a dress. They have all sorts of styles and colours. Upstairs they have shoes, bags and more clothes. Downstairs they have a piercing parlour, where you can then buy your belly bars etc upstairs on the ground floor. Staff are friendly.

Review of Miss Selfridge
13 Nov 07, 12:23
dissapointing...
This shop is nothing special. To me it always seems dark and cramped. There is too much stock in one space. Generally, I think Miss Selfridge has gone down hill and could do with a boost as it does have some good pieces but just isnt well presented. The staff can usually be found talking to eachother, the changing rooms are often messy. Not a great shopping experience...

Review of Topshop

a top shop...
There is not a huge amount I can say about this place, after all it is Topshop. It is a good branch and always looks good, the visuals are pretty impressive. It is well kept and not too messy. What is good about this branch is that is big (especially compared to Canterburys previous Topshop) and therefore has a greater choice of clothes than many other branches. It also has a good Topman upstairs

Review of Strada
13 Nov 07, 12:16
good staff...
This is a good branch of Strada. The food is really good, nice light Italian style cuisine. The service was prompt and there is a nice atmosphere here too. What stood out for me about this particular branch was the knowledge the staff had. My friend was unsure about which pudding to have and asked a member of the staff for their suggestion; they were able to give a really good description of the qualities each one held and which they preferred. Needless to say my friend enjoyed her pudding alot and was pleased with the staffs suggestion. It was pleasant to see staff that knew their stuff than have to scurry off and ask someone else. A good restaurant...

Review of Wagamama

yummy...
I really like Wagamama, it prides itself on fast fresh asian cuisine. This branch of Wagamama is very good, the staff are friendly and the service is prompt. I didnt know this until recently but you can get takeaway from here and its ok though the food was a little bit cold. So i reckon its better to eat there. If you have never been to Wagamama it is a sleek and simple restaurant that serves a wide variety if yummy asian food. Food is served when its ready so you might get your main before your starter. A good place to eat...

Review of Bloomsbury

a diverse shop...
This is such a cute little shop. It holds designer jewellery and lots of other lovely bits and pieces - a very eclectic and diverse shop. This includes, books, toiletries, home ware and some clothing. This shop always looks good and is in an old Tudor building. This shop strangely always smells really good too. This is an excellent place to get a present for someone special. Bloomsbury also stocks a good range of Renne Macintosh jewellery. It also has pieces for men such as designer cufflinks. The staff are really friendly and know their stock well. A great shop!

Review of Alberry's Wine Bar
12 Nov 07, 21:53
a good night out...
Personally I don't think there are that many good places to go out in Canterbury and this is as probably as good as it gets. Auberry's is a wine bar but it also has an area to dance downstairs in the basement. This place has a nice feel to it and quite a buzzing atmosphere. Drinks are not too expensive. There is seating upstairs and a small area downstairs. There are two bars with one being situated next to the dance area. There are different themed nights with good dj's. This is a good place for a night out on the town!

reasonable italian...
This is a good traditional Italian restaurant. It is very inviting with a relaxed feel; candle lit tables and nice views overlooking the town. The food is very good and of a high standard. There is a nice choice on the menu with traditional Italian meals as well as some other specials. The staff are very friendly and the service is good and fast. The prices are reasonable. A nice evening out to be had here!

Review of Beano Cafe
12 Nov 07, 21:48
greasy spoon...
This is your typical greasy spoon. If you want a large breakfast that looks like it could give you a heart attack by just looking at it, then come here. The food is good for what it is. The decor is dated. It is quite studenty with plenty of young bright things obviously trying to cure a hangover from hell. This is basically what you'd expect, but it is still good!

Review of Nando's
12 Nov 07, 21:48
very very nice chicken...
I love Nandos, its simple fast food but fast food that actually tastes good. For those who haven't been to Nandos before, they serve Portuguese style chicken dishes. You get to choose what level of spice you want, this is good if you have delicate taste buds like me. There also lots of yummy side orders to ass to your meal. You also pay before you have your meal, which is great as you don't have to wait for your bill at the end, you can just get up and go. They also are good value, for example they do re-fillable soft drinks and the food itself is reasonably priced. The service is fast and the staff friendly!

Review of Siesta
12 Nov 07, 21:34
tourist hot spot...
This is quite a strange shop; it sells all sorts of weird and wonderful things. It is a haven for foreign students and teenagers. They come here to get such things as whoopee cushions and other annoying things. Siesta also sells lots of ethnic inspired bits and pieces, think dream catchers and bongo drums. Upstairs they sell clothes, goth and hippy. They also sell a wide range of jewellery such as belly bars and flesh tunnel plugs. I have not been in here since I was 16. It's not a bad place it's just not my kind of thing anymore. It is quite a good place for finding small funny gifts!

Review of Old Gate Inn
12 Nov 07, 21:25
Roadside view...
This is an average pub that is unfortunately situated right next to a busy road out of Canterbury. So the views out of the window might not be great, but inside it is quite cosy and has that welcoming pub sort of feel. They serve hot meals here and have a dining area. The food is nothing special, but not bad either. Prices are reasonable and the staff and service are good.

Relaxing...
This hairdresser's has a very nice modern decor and always looks good and inviting. The staff here are very friendly. They offer a wide range of drinks (at one point they even used to do wine). I always feel relaxed after being here, they sometimes do hand massages whilst you have your haircut. The hairdresser who I regularly had was always really nice and cut my hair just how I wanted. I never felt like I couldn't say if I wanted something changed. Prices are quite reasonable and no more expensive than many other places. They also depend on what level hairdresser you have. Good hairdressers!

Review of The Merchant Chandler
12 Nov 07, 21:23
an eclectic mix...
This shop is a strange combination of nic - nacs and furniture. It is a nice shop and it is quite a good place to go to look for small gifts. They do have some good pieces for the home too, lots of soft furnishings and storage ideas. You then walk into a larger area, which holds furniture; it has more sort of ethnic pieces and rugs. Prices vary and much of the small bits and pieces are quite cheap. This is a nice shop to have a mosey around.

lovely clothes...
Noa noa is relatively new to Canterbury, it makes a nice change from the usual chain stores on the high street. Noa Noa is a slightly more up-market shop which still only has a few shops on the high street. The shop always looks really good and is well presented. It stocks lovely womenswear. The pieces are all really delicate and feminine. The staff are helpful and know their stock well. Prices are higher than most places but the clothes are of a better quality and will last you a long time

Review of City Fish & Chips
11 Nov 07, 14:28
busy fish and chip shop...
This is a very small fish and chip shop, and can get quite cramped. Though it does serve some pretty good fish and chips. They also serve all the other suspects you would expect to see in a fish and chip shop. This place gets very busy at lunchtimes. The combination of tourists wanting some traditional fish and chips and workers and students wanting a quick lunch can mean a long queue. So expect to wait a while to place your order

Review of Fenwick
11 Nov 07, 14:13
rejuventated and looking good...
For those who have been to Canterbury before will know that the town centre has had a lot of work done on it recently, most notably the Whitefriars area. Central to this is Fenwicks. Previously known as Ricemans this once outdated department store has now gone under a massive overhaul. It is now modern, and airy. It has a great homeware and furniture department and the young fashion is greatly improved with some top names stocked. This department really does have it all. Fenwicks may have alienated some of its older customers but it has definetly brought in lots of new ones...

a lovely jewellers...
This is a good jewellers situated right next to the cathedral. It has lots of lovely pieces. The best thing about this jewellers is the service. My parents bought me a ring for my 21st here and the man who runs the shop was really helpful. Unfortunately one of the stones fell out of said ring after quite a while of having it. My parents took it into the jewellers expecting to have to pay for a replacement stone, however, the jeweller did it all for free!! A friendly and LOCAL jewellers

Review of Odeon Cinema
11 Nov 07, 11:36
new comfy seats...
This branch of Odeon is quite small and has only 2 screens. If you like to snack whilst watching a film you have lots to choose from, lots of popcorn, ice cream and pick and mix. But as with most places this is quite expensive. This cinema has had new seats put in which is a much needed improvement as previously it was uncomfortable and cramped. Dont expect to see any indie films here, however they do show older films on Thursday nights

Review of Cafe Mauresque
10 Nov 07, 21:34
a little bit of morocco in canterbury...
Do you like Moroccan food? That was the question that was put to me the first time I was invited to Cafe Mauresque, well yes I do, as it turned out. Cafe Mauresque is a really cool place with a great atmosphere, just going down the twisting narrow stairs with a candle on each tread gets the evening off to a great start. (Slightly worried about the health and safety aspects I must say!) Downstairs the decor is definitely North African with low seating in secluded alcoves, brilliantly coloured cushions creating splashes of colour against the dark wooden latticed screens. The food is very tasty, pleasantly spiced, and exotically served. The service is good and so are the prices. For an evening with a difference I can thoroughly recommend Cafe Mauresque, you climb back up the stairs to be rather surprised to find yourself in the middle of Canterbury not in a desert in Morocco.

a unique service...
This shops holds a wide variety of denim jeans. They stock some good brands such as Levi and Lee. They do both mens and womens jeans in all sorts of styles. The best thing about this shop is that they offer a free alteration service. All the jeans come in one length and then a member of staff measures how much you need taken off (if any) and then you purchase your jeans and come back in a couple of hours to collect them. For someone who is quite short this is a great service as it means I always get the perfect length jeans. The staff are really helpful and know alot about their products and offer good advise on fit

Lovely location, good food...
I always enjoy going to Pizza Express, there is always a nice atmosphere in this particular branch. The decor is nice with a light contemporary feel. The food is really good. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly and attentive. This branch is in a nice location as it overlooks the River Stour. Though this being said it may be that you get seated in area where you cant see it, as there are several areas to this particular branch and they dont all share the same the good view. All in all a nice restaurant.

Review of Century Chinese Restaurant

The best chinese I've ever had...
This is a great Chinese restaurant, it may not look like anything special on the outside but don't be fooled. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. The decor may be a bit dated and traditionally chinese but once you taste the food this can easily be forgiven. My reccomendation is to go for the all you can eat which as far as I can remember is about £13. This is a really reasonable price. Here you get to choose as much as you want, be it lots of starters and then some mains. Basically its up to you. The food is so tasty, I particulary like the mixed houre d'ouveres. They also do a takeaway service. I seriously suggest you give this restaurant a try. Its the best

Review of Funky Monks

vintage clothing...
Funky monks is quite a small vintage shop situated at the top end of Canterbury high street. It offers a good range of men and womenswear. There is also a nice selection of clothing from different eras. I have got some really nice 60's dresses from here. The lady who owns the shop is friendly and helpful. Prices are ok and no worse than many of the other vintage shops around. This shop also stocks pieces for fancy dress and has some good shoes and accessories too. I have to say this is quite a nice little vintage shop and is worth checking back often as they do get new stuff in regularly.

Review of The Sugar Boy
06 Nov 07, 21:34
sweet paradise...
This is an old fashioned sweet shop stacked to the brim with sweets you havent seen for years, such as (for my genertaion) kola kubes and sherbert pips. There are also sweets that older generations will re-call. They also sell more current sweets such as jelly beans. There is so much to choose from you'll spend a good time picking. The Sugar Boy also has its own claim to fame as it provided much of the sweets for the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This is such a quaint shop and theres something so nostalgic about seeing your sweets meausured out on the scales. This place can get quite busy as it is ideally situated right next to the Kings School entrance, so theres lots of kids popping in to get their sugar fix. Plus you get a good share of tourists who are lured in by the old fashioned shop fronting. Prices are obviously dependant on weight so remember not to get too carried away!

vintage threads...
This place is full of vintage clothing. It ranges from really nice pieces to others that are probably best for dressing up or some sort of a 70's theme night. The main reason I go to this shop is the shoes. There is a good range of womens vintage shoes. Well there used to be actually, it seems to have gone down a bit of late. You used to be able to get some great Shellys shoes for a fraction of the price. This is still a nice little shop and it is worth while to keep checking back as they get new things in quite regularly. The lady who runs the store is very helpful and friendly. And sometimes shes able to offer you a discount, esp if you re buying two pairs of shoes or something. So its can be worth asking if she can lower the price as it has worked in my favour a couple of times

Review of The Cuban

Cuban...
The Cuban is a bar and restaurant. I have just been here for drinks but have only ever heard positive things about the restaurant and food. The bar area above the restaurant is very good. It is relaxed and modern with a cuban feel to it. There is even Cuban news playing on tv's in the bar. They serve a wide choice of drinks and cocktails. I can reccommend the Cosmopolitans which are particularly intoxicating. Drinks however are quite pricey compared to some other places in Canterbury. I would reccomend this as a place to start your evening out.

Review of Saffron Cafe

Great staff and food...
The Saffron Cafe is a lovely little cafe situated off the high street. It is very popular at lunch time as many of the employees of the surrounding offices come here. If you pick a good time this is a great place to come for a bite to eat. There is alot to choose from, there are small snacks such as pannis as well as bigger meals. The food is all very tasty and is served quite promptly. The food is of a good quality and always tastes good. There is a really nice atmosphere here. This is mainly due to the staff who are really friendly. They always greet you with a smile and they know their regular customers. You always feel welcome here no matter if it is busy. I can strongly reccommend this cafe. Its so good to see a family run businness who obviously enjoy what they do and do it well.

Review of Cafe Des Amis Du Mexique

The best mexican...
This is one of my favourite restaurants, it serves authentic and super tasty mexican food. The nachos are the best I have ever had. I can reccommend the Pollo Verde and the fajhitas to share (well actually I would reccomend any of it to you). As you can tell the food is all really impressive. They also serve yummy pina coladas. The atmosphere is really great. There is mexican music playing and the decor is rustic, bright and inviting. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food is reasonably priced. This is a "must" place to visit!
