Review of Drake Circus Shopping Centre
31 May 08, 00:23
another shopping centre!
I have mixed feelings about this place, on the one hand its shiny and new and looks stunning, on the other hand theres nothing really new about whats inside ... same old same old, usual high street names. My only worry is that it doesnt drain the life out of Plymouth's shopping heart.

Review of Pizza Hut
30 May 08, 23:57
Chain Reaction
Unfortunately with Pizza Hut, they are a chain who have lost direction. At one time THE place for Pizza, now this branch is looking old and un cared for. The tell tale sign ( no pun) is the red lighting strip around the roof, which sadly is mostly broken.
Its mass produced food, supposedly "fast", but sadly lacking in speed, the staff excell, but this place is normally under staffed as the wait times are horrendous.
AS Expected ... because that always the way with Pizza Hut.

Best Mix
A trip to Exeter starts off with a visit to this shopping centre, then you move on to the rest of the shops!
I love the fact that ( unlike Princesshay) there is a great mix of Nation shops and individual, locally owned shops.
I cant remember the name, but half way down the left side, is a local jewellers who make cut price jewellry on the premesis.

Review of Cotton Traders
30 May 08, 13:58
why would you ..
if you have ever visited clarkes village, you soon realise that its well worth NOT buying from the regular high street branches of these shops. Cotton Traders is fab, all you would find in the regular high street shops, BUT a fraction of the price. For the elder man really, my dad loves it and there's always a carrier bag with Polo shirts, slacks and sensible shirts in the car when we leave.

Review of Thorntons
30 May 08, 13:44
You know what ...
you know what ..... you cant beat Thorntons for sweets. I guess that one shop is much like another, but at least with this one its a bit cheaper because of the location.
Always come up trumps with the seasonal goodies - easter, christmas etc.

much of a muchness
amusement arcades are a great way to while away a wet afternoon - and you get plenty of those in Torquay. Always enjoy the one arm bandits and the old fashioned 2p machines ... but this place has a whole lot of new machines too, including a driving simulator which was excellent

Review of Organic Sandwich Shop
29 May 08, 20:22
Buzz Word
Organic is one of those buzz words that everyone thinks means "better than the ordinary stuff". I had a basic cheese and pickle sandwich here with a bit of salad. Not sure if the pickle was organic or not ..... it was Branstons tho!
I challenge you to be able to taste any difference between this Organic bread and organic cheese - you cant. The only way you know its Organic is that you pay well over the odds for a basic cheese sandwich for the privilage of being told its better for you.

Review of QS Familywear Clothing Retailer Branches
29 May 08, 19:52
one of few
one of a few big names in town. QS renowned for cheap clothes that will last a season, then u throw them away and had good use out of them. With Butlins round the corner, I bet this place does a bomb with its good prices and good quality. Staff are a bit dis interested, but I guess thats a seaside trait.

Review of Samarkand

many a visit
thing i really like about this gift shop is that theres cheap and tacky ( snow globes and plastic souvenirs ) and also nice gifts - lovely cuddly toys, nice pieces of glass and crystal and some nice figueroons.
That actually means you can get ur nice stuff for the family and the cheap stuff for the friends ALL in one shop

yep from the outside it looks like a pub that selld watneys red barrel ... and it probably still does. This place is always packed so it MUST have something about it. Myself, I find it intimidating walking past crowds of barely legal teens supping and smoking .. and that be youre even inside. Looks like a dive and is.

Review of Dunster Candy Shop
29 May 08, 17:57
very nice
This is a lovely little shop where you can pop in when on holiday and get gifts to take home for every one you left behind.
Theres rock things for the kids .. theres nice packs of olde worlde biscuits for gran and grandad and some nice locally made fudge for everyone else.
They even do "big" boxes of fudge and biscuits so you can take some thing back for the staff at work.
THEN when youve done that, u can enjoy the rest of ur holiday

Leisure??
this is a walkers paradise. really lovely shop for boots, wet weather gear, sensible hats - all very tally ho old chap.
They aim for the gentleman type - and to be fair why not , they have the money afterall!.
Not the place to go or a kagool or some flip flops. But in need of a riding crop or a nice pair of wellies, this is the place.
Expensive, but you play for the quality

Review of Londis
29 May 08, 17:16
Londis is spreading
this used to be a locally owned shop. Now its a londis. Usual selection of stuff that every londis has. This is the only food shop in the village, so you really are stuck for choice. Its average, its over priced, has some special offers of stuff you wouldnt normally buy.
Staff are local so know everyone. can be a pain if ur in a hurry and someone infront of you is having a chat - recently selling postage stamps too and has a cash point machine.

just average
prodominantly a gift shop, but they also do a lovely range of sweeties - dont go Mars Bar hunting - not that sort of sweets.
You'll find fudges and candies - the fudge packers have even boxed the fudge ready to take home.
Theres a lovely range to give as gifts. with boxes bearing the words " thanks for looking after ..... " cat, dog, kids , gran, house.garden etc)

Review of Porlock Takeaway

its a take away
fast food at its best. does all you'd expect really burgers, chips, fish, sausages.
Has a good selection of extras, gravey, curry sauce , chilli sauce etc etc etc.
Grab a drink too, usual cold drinks, coke, 7 up etc.
they DO cook to order at quite periods so u may have to wait for some things to be cooked ... well at least its fresh

Review of The Warren Nursing Home
28 May 08, 12:18
Good
I have a relation who had to spend a little time in this home. He always said he was well looked after and that the staff were "ansome" - which means they really looked after him. He was a guy who could eat for England, and always said how well ( and how often ) he was fed and watered. Peaceful place and certainly recomended.

Review of Surf Bay Holiday Park

Westward Ho!
this is a perfect base for a holiday, centrally located in the seaside village of Westward Ho! - dont forget the ! it's important). This park has its own privat access to the glorious local beach, which makes it a bit more exclusive than the rest. Westward Ho! its self is a great location with easy access to Bideford, Barnstaple and Bude.

this type of shop are in every town in the UK ... so why do I love them>
A collection of the cheap and tacky, pre packed boxes of fudge wit " I heart Bude " on. Cheapo surf body boards, sunglasses ... see what i mean.
Occasional gems tho, love the glass selection - nice glass vases, ornaments and bowls.

Review of Absolute Tickets
22 May 08, 18:04
much of a muchness
I realised that with these cheap ticket places, there really isnt any point in trying to shop around. This one like the others in the area, all have access to the same seats and shows as eachother. So, the same tickets will be on sale in every one. If you want to see the top shows ( well the current ones ) you wont find tickets here .. BUT if ur prepared to see something thats been running a while, this is a great place to buy. Have used them often.

Cheapo Tickets galore
Just one of many places to buy cheap theatre tickets. basically they all have the same seats on sale so its not worth trying to shop around these places. Highly unlikely they have tickets for the shows you want to see, but if you dont care what u see , you WILL get cheap tickets for the shows that are coming to the end of their runs.

Captive

just one of many
there are loads of cheap ticket places in and around this area. they will basically all have the same seats on sale. best not to go there with a speciffic show in mind and just see what they have. chances are they wont have tickets for the really biggies - even tho the posters say they do. Whatever u decide, you will see a great west end show, at a cheap price.

Review of The Disney Store

Great Brand
lets face it everyone loves Disney!
Its a great brand that untill recently had become stale .. until along came High School Musical and suddenly Disney was fashionable again. I must say I preferred this store when it was in the old location but I guess a disney store is a Disney store.
Unfortunately, the London staff, havent quite got the " have a nice day" ethos quite right ... in the states, the staff mean it.
Great shop, grumpy staff

Review of Barum Gate Brewers Fayre
17 May 08, 22:21
chain reaction
Brewers Fayre is a restaurant chain bolted on to a hotel \\ motorway service rest stop chain. The building is lovely but the food is still a bit " boil in the bag". You know what youre getting and as long as its been in the microwave long enough it'll be the same temperature as last time. Great play aresa for the kids in the summer, not kid friendly when wet outside.

world renowned
the whole world knows the emporium of play things. We always pay a visit when ever we go to the smoke. At some point in my life i have bought some thing from each floor - having a boy and a girl lol. U pay over the odds tho, but thats because of the name I guess. Recently bought some Dr Who figures at £9.99 ( £8.99 at the Dr Who exhibition and £7.99 in Woolies). still you gotta pay for all the staff I guess.

its at Atlantic Village
Not sure why the address is 30 cos its actually in Atlantic Village - lol. Toyzone is a huge shop full of non branded toys, dress up sets, cars, guns, hula hoops etc and toys that are well past the sell by date. Last years "must" have Batman figues - but the ones no one wanted to buy at the time. You wont get the main characters, but the minor role characters. Sorry to say there really isnt the clientelle in Nth Devon to support this kind of business. Chain store jewellery at chain store prices. All chain store jewellers are basically the same. They buy loads, flog it cheap and everyone gets a deal. But, if you want something a bit better, you're limited in Hinds. Buying here, you also run the risk of everyone else having the same jewellry as you do.

This really is a lovely place to eat and the menu is fantastic. The staff were very helpful with my daughter who is a vegitarian. As Suse says it IS pricey, but it IS quality. If you want cheap, go to McDonalds. If you want a nice restaurant experience ... you found it.

Review of Bear Street Pharmacy
11 May 08, 20:37
Why the plasma
you could easily walk past this chemist thinking its a TV shop - ther is a huge plasma tv screen in the window. The staff know their stuff and you can also often ask the pharmacist for info, insted of visiting a doc. Get ur blood pressure checked here too.

Review of Ilfracombe Swimming Pool
11 May 08, 20:05
School use mainly
During term time you have to share the pool with all the schools in Ilfracombe, so its pretty much busy during the days all the time ... The facilities are basic, but it serves the community and the staff are always friendly. Evenings are the best time to catch the place at a quiet moment. In the Summer is popular with visitors.

Review of Ilfracombe Town Football Club
11 May 08, 20:02
fairweather
Im a fairweather fan. Ifracombe seem to be doing pretty well at the moment. The supporter facilities are virtually non existant at the ground . For the players the facilities are basic. Parking is an absolute nightmare as the ground is at the top of a hill, with houses all round it. Takes ages to get outa the car park as its always double and tripple parked. Suggest you park outside the ground and walk in.

Review of Somerfield Stores
11 May 08, 19:45
Hmmm
It always puts me off when the staff are stood out side smoking a fag! This Somerfield is far too small, relocation would make it bigger and better and probably more successful. Usual selection of provisions from a superstore that is not renowned for its standing in the Supermarket league table.

Review of L A Wash & Dry
11 May 08, 19:24
all the same
Imagine the laundry on Eastenders ... got it? Well here it is. I must confess I have only ever used this place once when my machine broke down. Was able to wash and dry and had fun people watching the varied selection of locals rushing by the window. Would use it again, clean, tidy and the machines were so very easy to use. Nice one

Review of Happydays Late Shop
11 May 08, 18:54
Happydays
Well at least the staff in here are friendly! Happydays - what brand IS that? Stocked with unkown brands and own lables and opens late too so ideal for those " danm i have no bread for the kids packed lunch" moments at 10 at night. Nothing special, but serving the community with a smile.

Review of Spar
11 May 08, 18:51
aaaarrrggghh
Hey the grumpy staff are here too! Yep as with all Londis, Costcutters and Spar shops this one comes with the obligatory unhelpful, grumpy staff. Also the usual "offers" that you dont actually want ( who in hells teeth wants cheap Spar plastic bread on offer when for a few pence more you can get real bread), un fresh fruit n veg and cheapo brand yoghurts ... Thank goodness theres a Tesco on the way!

Review of Londis
11 May 08, 18:47
but thats bad
my visit was exactly what i expected. There must be some thing about the staff in Londis, Spar and Costcutters. Are they specially trained to be sullen and unhelpful? As some point the objections to Tesco in Torrington will cease and the good folk of Torry will get a decent food shopping experience in town ... i hope the days of this sort of abomination are short lived

Review of Torrington Museum
11 May 08, 18:31
small but prefectly formed
as with all small museums, this one is average. With Dartington Crystal being a main attraction in Torrrington, the bulk of the content of the museum is about that very place. With Dartington Crystal not being too far away, you can actually find out all about it at the factory. Sorry if that seems negative. In actual fact, its a lovely little museum, cram packed with Torrrington history and memories ...

Review of Cafe Theatre
11 May 08, 18:14
Its ok
Sorry cant say anything more than its OK. Exactly what you would expect from a cafe .... teas and coffees, soft drinks and reasonably priced food. Not much of a veggie selection tho ... tuna sandwiches and cheese sandwiches .. not much really. Generally OK

Room outside
one of many good pubs in Torry. If its a nice day you can sit outside of this pub. No food on offer the night I went, but was easy enough to find a pub that did after one drink in th eplace

Review of Bideford Cobblers & Keys
08 May 08, 13:51
who?
who ever decided that some one expert in putting heels on shoes would also be expert at key cutting?? Anyway this guy is really helpful. I love the selection of wierd key colours and styles. I recently got a yale key cut with a leopard print on for my daughter and one that looks like a football for my son. I myself went for a very tasteful purple one

Review of Bideford News
08 May 08, 13:43
typical
its your typical old fashioned news agents .. all the papers, shelves stacked with magazines and the usual sweets and fags. ONE suggestion, the shelves really are crammed with magazines, which can make the ease of browsing difficult, maybe good to thin out the quantity of mags???

Review of Bideford Health Foods

not holland and barratt
im a regular visitor to this small but very well stocked local shop. Im so glad there isnt a "big boy" in the town as i think this shop would suffer. the staff are up for a laugh, but saying that, they know their stuff so always on hand for advice.

Review of B & Q
08 May 08, 13:34
tends to be pricey
I guess all B and Q s are the same and its the staff who make the difference. Although B and Q are never my first option for D I Y (there are cheaper) you can always find what ur after even if it is a bit over priced. As for the staff, they are really friendly and helpful and really do their best for customer service.

Review of McDonald's Restaurants
08 May 08, 13:31
only one complaint
i love Mcdonalds, you know exactly what you are getting from the moment you walk in the door ... HOWEVER, even tho they TRY and cater for vegitarians, there are key times of the day when they have "run out" of the veggie option ( the roast veggi deli wrap is a prime example). I found it best to order the veggi option first, that way you know if they have it, THEN order the non veggi. That way you're not all eating while the veggie isnt.

Review of Powerpoint
02 May 08, 13:04
Have another look
If you go looking for Powerpoint you will be hard pushed to find it. It is actually situated inside the CoOp store. Find that, and you have found one of the best priced white goods retailers in the area. They stock brand names and also their cheaper own brand. Standard prices on the big names but thier own brand is just as good and cheaper.

cheap brands
well cheap UN brands actually. Cheap never heard of products OR products that no other shop wants or stocks. It amazes me that cheap jack shops survive. I guess you get what u pay for .

Review of Raffles
30 Apr 08, 13:32
CLOSED
this was a great shop but now it is closed. I used to spend a dull wet afternoon in there just rummaging round the old records. The guy dabbled in ebay for a while, so maybe this was more profitable than the retail shop.

Review of Plymco Supermarket
30 Apr 08, 13:02
3 stars but only cos of the local plants.
This place has a real identity crisis. It has had so many different names and owners over the last 10 years its hard to remember who owns it at the moment. I think its currently a Co Op. It does all you would expect form a Co Op as far as groceries is concerned, but this one has a really nice plant nursery as part of the site. The plants are locally sourced and Devon grown and stocks a great range of good quality tools and garden essentials.

Review of Banana Bookshop
30 Apr 08, 12:47
springing up -ooh
Banana books seem to be springing up all over the place. Stocked with the sort of books no one reads. Random biographies and books about crafts you never heard of. Its all end of range but cheap, so good to get presents for people you dont really know, or like. This branch at Atlantic Village also sells no one wants CDs and cheap wrapping paper and cheap cards.

Review of Field Fresh
30 Apr 08, 12:20
HUGE!
Right on the front by the Quay, this is actually a huge warehouse that is crammed with fruit and veg and flowers. The produce arrives daily in huge lorries so is always fresh. Good to pop in at the end of the day as thats when they often reduce the good that are coming to the end of shelf life - great if ur watching the budget.

Review of Bideford RFC

not a rugby fan
Football is my game really, but have been to a couple of games at Bideford. Always a great friendly atmos. The club room is what you would expect, basic, cheap bar, toilets smell and normally packed after a game with the players sinking pints and flashing their knobs!

Review of Burton Art Gallery & Museum
30 Apr 08, 11:51
Keep it local
As Dave has said, one visit and you're done really. Having said this, there is a regular programme of short stay exhibitions that visit the gallery. Best to keep an eye open in the local press to see whats coming up next. Free entry too so thats a bonus, but this strugggling gallery is always in need of monetary donations please

Review of Cafecino Plus
30 Apr 08, 11:38
Oh!
I really want this place to be awesome. I like going here, but thats as good as it gets .. I just "like" it. Its not stunning or excellent. Its just average. The food is OK, a bit pricey. The staff are good. The atmos is cosy and intimate. Upstairs there is a small bar where I believe they still do bigger party gatherings. Tappas is the speciality in the upstairs area. I love it, but it really isnt anything special.

Review of Trawlers

Another Bideford place that needs a facelift
The food is lovely. Freshly cooked and tasty. The staff are friendly and obviously enjoy their jobs. If only they would update the the decor and furnishings. the look of the place really does put you off eating there, which is a real shame as the food is srumptious.

Review of Tavern In Port
30 Apr 08, 10:25
Get used to it
I have never found this place anything more than somewhere to pop into for a drink, when on your way to somewhere else. It has 2 (maybe 3??) bars on different levels. Have eaten here and the food was actually very good. Traditional pub grub, mass produced served on a plate with some garnish. Reasonably priced. Limited beers but well stocked spirits .

Review of W H Smith
29 Apr 08, 13:42
What do you expect?
well we all know what W H smith is about. The top 100 best sellers plus the stuff that was a best seller a few months ago. Not really the best book shop in the world, but if you know what to expect you wont be disappointed. This branch also carries the usual selection of staionery, dvds, cds etc.

Review of Hartland Pantry

all you need
yep, all yopu could want from a small village bakery. The smell fo freshly baked bread hits you from about 5am! Tempted by the smell, you will soon have stocked up on freshly baked, break , cakes and fancies. If you're off exploring the area, they do freshly made sandwiches too!
